Everyone on MSNBC (which I am watching all day today for our Townhall readers) seems really worried that people aren’t going to understand the whole proportionality thing that’s going to happen on the Democratic side of the primaries.
Dan Abrams just interviewed Newsweek’s Richard Wolffe who had one of the best explanations of this so far. I’ve transcribed his remarks below.
Abrams: When you are talking about proportional results where there’s not going to be a sort of winner-take-all on the Democratic side in any of these states. How we asses the winners becomes crucial because someone could win 53 percent of the vote, Richard and split the delegates right down the middle
Wolffe: Yeah, and remember we are playing into a media template here of calling states. We have a model in mind of a general election night when someone is declared the winner of a state, a big state, especially like California. Those are more psychological issues now in terms of the victories, the moral victories that these campaigns can plan. The number crunching on the delegates is really complicated and it’s not just such a clean story and I think we have to be aware of that as we go through the TV coverage tonight.
Emphasis on it’s “not such a clean story.” I mean, I can't be the only one who thinks it's a little unfair to Obama that Bill Clinton is a superdelegate, right?
On a lighter note, I predicted this could lead to a “nightmare scenario" for Hillary over on Glamour magazine’s political blog earlier today. (Warning, it's a humorous post, not serious. I don't do any real endorsements or predictions.)
