House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is about to have the weight of the liberal world on her shoulders. On the one hand, she hates Trump and wants to destroy him. On the other, is executing a politically charged impeachment fight that will rile up congressional Republicans and energize the Trump coalition worth it, especially if their side has no candidate who can beat Trump. Yes, we all know about Biden and his white working-class roots etc., but that an impeachment fight will nuke that outreach effort. He’s already halfway there by kowtowing to the Green New Deal trash that’s being peddled by the House Democrats’ far left coalition.
Now, it’s also true that the Ocasio-Cortez-Ilhan Omar wing is small, but scores of 2020 Democrats have jumped on the impeachment train. So, what’s she going to do? If history shows anything, she’ll probably cave. Pelosi was unable to corral the crazies during Omar’s most recent spout of anti-Semitism, where she accused supporters of Israel of exhibiting dual loyalty. A simple non-binding resolution condemning anti-Semitism was watered down because the far left didn’t want to single Omar out for her apparent bigotry. The party was catering to and tolerating anti-Jewish sentiment. Pelosi did nothing. Now, behind closed doors, we have the caucus at each other throats over impeachment, which Guy wrote about.
Politico reported today that Pelosi would rather see Trump in jail than impeached:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats that she’d like to see President Donald Trump “in prison” as she clashed with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler in a meeting on Tuesday night over whether to launch impeachment proceedings.
Pelosi met with Nadler (D-N.Y.) and several other top Democrats who are aggressively pursuing investigations against the president, according to multiple sources. Nadler and other committee leaders have been embroiled in a behind-the-scenes turf battle for weeks over ownership of the Democrats’ sprawling investigation into Trump.
Nadler pressed Pelosi to allow his committee to launch an impeachment inquiry against Trump — the second such request he’s made in recent weeks only to be rebuffed by the California Democrat and other senior leaders. Pelosi stood firm, reiterating that she isn’t open to the idea of impeaching Trump at this time.
“I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,” Pelosi said, according to multiple Democratic sources familiar with the meeting. Instead of impeachment, Pelosi still prefers to see Trump defeated at the ballot box and then prosecuted for his alleged crimes, according to the sources.
GET IN THE ROOM: @SpeakerPelosi's own leadership team tonight rebelled against her on impeachment.— Rachael Bade (@rachaelmbade) May 21, 2019
During a closed door meeting, at least five members of her leadership team pushed her to bless an impeachment inquiry against Trump.
I never thought I would ever write this, but it appears that Pelosi is the only rational one in the room to a certain degree. The whole Trump being in jail view is trash; he didn’t do anything wrong. And Russian collusion was debunked by the Mueller report. It’s the fact that she would rather defeat him in the next election that’s somewhat refreshing from a liberal hailing from a state and a city—San Francisco—that’s most certainly pro-impeachment. Also, the Democrats lust for impeachment could be a sign that maybe at a subconscious level, they know this is the only way to defeat Trump. They know the powers of incumbency, they know the 2020 primaries could devolve into a blood bath over who is the most “woke,” and the economy continues to soldier on strong. I mean some Democrats have already confessed the intent of their impeachment pushes: they’re worried about Trump being re-elected. I would too if my 2020 candidate bus was full of left-wing clowns, some of which have zero shot at connecting with voters outside of the liberal northeast. Still, this impeachment albatross will hang around the Left’s neck and it will surely be felt with Ms. Pelosi. So, grab your popcorn. This isn't going to go well for them.
