BREAKING: Trump Names New National Security Adviser to Replace H.R. McMaster

John Bolton, former US Ambassador to the United Nations, will be President Trump's new national security adviser.

"I am pleased to announce that, effective 4/9/18, @AmbJohnBolton will be my new National Security Advisor. I am very thankful for the service of General H.R. McMaster who has done an outstanding job & will always remain my friend. There will be an official contact handover on 4/9," the president tweeted Thursday evening.

The shakeup comes after numerous reports earlier this month that McMaster was on his way out. The White House denied the dismissal last week, however, with White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders writing on Twitter, "Just spoke to @POTUS and Gen. H.R. McMaster - contrary to reports they have a good working relationship and there are no changes at the NSC."

As Matt noted, this is just the latest change in what's turning out to be a spring cleanup. Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week and is seeking to replace him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Economic adviser Gary Cohn also resigned, and there are reports that the president is eying Pete Hegseth to take over the Department of Veterans Affairs if Secretary David Shulkin is dismissed.
