McCarthy Gives Update on Scalise's Condition

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy joined Fox News’s “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning to provide an update on his colleague and friend Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot in the hip during a congressional baseball practice last month.

McCarthy said Scalise’s recent infection for which he was readmitted to the Intensive Care Unit and underwent surgery to address was no surprise.

“I was at the hospital the day of the shooting. I was with the doctor. And what we were battling at that time was the amount of bleeding,” he said. “But the doctor told me once we go through this it’s not if it’s when Steve would get an infection. We knew this would come about, we just didn’t know when this would happen.”

He’s been battling the infection, McCarthy added, noting he received an update on his condition Monday night.

“He was doing better, and that’s what we’re fighting and working though today. He looks so much better, he was back to finally eating any food that he wanted so he was feeling better,” the Majority Leader said.

McCarthy said he and his wife were with Scalise on July 4th, when he was out of the hospital bed and sitting in a chair.

On July 6, the hospital issued the following statement on his condition: "Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery for the management of infection. He tolerated the procedure well. He remains in serious condition. We will provide updates as appropriate."

No other official updates have been provided.
