Krauthammer: Comey 'Created an Irrelevant New Standard' to Let Clinton Off

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer weighed in on the FBI’s decision Tuesday recommending charges not be brought against Hillary Clinton, saying the “conclusion of the day is that she is a noncriminal liar.”

Beyond that, however, Krauthammer agreed with critics of the FBI’s decision, calling Comey’s conclusion “puzzling.”

“He laid the case for gross negligence. He accused her of extreme carelessness. Then he laid out the fact that she should have known, she did know,” Krauthammer said. “And then he created a completely irrelevant new standard, which is malicious intent, but negligence does not require intent. That’s the whole point of having it in the statute. There’s intentional, and the statute says or gross negligence.”

Krauthammer’s conclusion? That Comey’s logic is dead wrong.

“He spent 14 minutes laying out a case for negligence then said you can’t prosecute.”

And while the case may be closed, Krauthammer said that politically, this is just the beginning of the barrage of ads that will come ahead of the election juxtaposing what Comey said Tuesday with her remarks in the past.
