Train Station at Israel's Western Wall Will Be Named After Trump

Israel’s transportation minister announced Wednesday that a train station near the Western Wall in Jerusalem will be named after President Donald Trump, following his historic decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

“The Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jewish people, and I decided to name the train station that leads to it after President Trump — following his historic and brave decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel,” Transportation Minister Israel Katz said, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The train station will be a part of a new high-speed railway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Katz has told Transportation Ministry officials to make the railway a top priority. The railway has been under construction since 2001 and will update a slower railway system that currently operates between the two cities.

Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Western Wall during a trip to the Middle East in May.

He fulfilled a campaign promise by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel earlier this month and announcing plans to move the U.S. embassy there.

The Associated Press reports that the route will run close to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Israel’s Transportation Ministry spokesman Avner Ovadia said Wednesday that the project is estimated to cost more than $700 million and would take four years to complete.

Katz said the planned high-speed rail station will allow visitors to see "the beating heart of the Jewish people — the Western Wall and the Temple Mount."
