Xi Jinping is a popular guy today. President Trump announced Tuesday that he will be speaking with the Chinese president this morning, laying out the topics of interest.
I will be speaking to my friend, President Xi of China, this morning at 8:30. The primary topics will be Trade, where good things will happen, and North Korea, where relationships and trust are building.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 8, 2018
It turns out Kim Jong Un also wanted Jinping's attention. Shortly after Trump's tweet, we learned of a surprise meeting between the North Korean leader and Jinping in the Chinese city of Dalian.
Trump has received tons of kudos for helping facilitate better communication between North and South Korea. Kim Jong Un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. After the historic meeting, media suggested Trump may even deserve the Nobel peace prize for those relationship building efforts. They were also impressed by the photos of then-Secretary of State nominee Mike Pompeo secretly meeting with Kim Jong Un over Easter weekend.
The readout between Trump and Jinping will be released later today. Trump is also preparing for a summit with Kim Jong Un later this month.
