Trump Insists He Never Asked Comey for Loyalty...But it Wouldn't Have Been 'Inappropriate'

President Trump told Judge Jeanine Pirro in their Fox News interview over the weekend that he has no clue where The New York Times was receiving their information regarding his firing of FBI Director James Comey. In a piece entitled "President Trump Craves Loyalty, But Offers None," the editors suggested that Trump asked Comey to pledge loyalty to him.

“I don’t know how that got there, because I didn’t ask that question,” Trump responded. However, he didn’t think that asking loyalty from Comey would be inappropriate - not to him, but to the nation at large.

“I don’t think it would be a bad question to ask,” he explained. “Loyalty to the country, loyalty to the United States is important.”

“All I want is for Comey to be honest" regarding the Russia investigation, Trump continued. The president has insisted that in a phone conversation with Comey, the former FBI director assured him he was not being targeted in the investigation.

Looking forward, Trump says he has an impressive list of candidates to take over the position.

“We have extremely capable people,” he said. “People of great prestige.”

The announcement may be coming as early as Friday, the president predicted.

“We owe it to the public to do it fairly quickly.”
