Republicans Hold Indiana Senate Seat; Young Defeats Bayh

Republican Todd Young has won the Indiana Senate election, NBC News is projecting. Young, who has represented Indiana in the House of Representatives since 2011, was embroiled in a tough race against onetime senator Evan Bayh. Both were trying to replace Sen. Dan Coats (R), who announced in 2015 that he would not seek reelection.

Polls had been relatively close, but Young was able to capitalize on a late surge in the polls and come away with the win. This is a key victory for the Republicans in their quest to maintain their Senate majority.
