Chipotle in Hot Water Over Non-GMO Claims

Chipotle, the fast-casual burrito chain, sparked headlines earlier this year when they announced they will phase out GMO (genetically modified) foods from their menu. Now they're being sued over it. Despite Chipotle's claim they don't use GMOs in their food, the meat products served in the restaurant are fed with GMO food and the dairy products used by the chain come from cows that were fed GMOs.

"As Chipotle told consumers it was 'G-M-Over it,' the opposite was true," Gallagher said. "In fact, Chipotle's menu has never been, at any time, free of GMOs."

Among other things, the complaint alleges that Chipotle serves meat products that come from animals which feed on GMOs, including soy and corn, that its sour cream and cheese ingredients come from dairy farms that feed animals with GMOs, and that Chipotle sells soft drinks that are made with corn-syrup—a GMO.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold declined to discuss details of the case but told Reuters that the restaurant chain plans to contest the lawsuit.

GMOs are universally acknowledged as being safe. There is no reason to be afraid of them just because they may sound slightly scary. Humans have modified plants naturally for thousands of years--it's how we have seedless watermelons, for instance.

I still eat at Chipotle, and I think their food is pretty good for what it is, but if they claim to be non-GMO, they really should...be non-GMO.
