Former El Paso Congressman and failed senatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke has officially made the announcement: he's running for president in 2020.

Although he doesn't intend to officially make the announcement until Thursday, he sent a text message to KTSM Wednesday afternoon confirming his intent to run.

"I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents," O'Rourke said in the text. "It's a big part of why I'm running. This city is the best example of this country at its best."

Many on both sides of the aisle have wondered whether or not Beto would run, especially after his loss to Sen. Ted Cruz back in November. O'Rourke has caused speculation to grow by holding a counter protest to President Donald Trump's border rally in El Paso last month. He has also spent the last few weeks an Iowa, a clear indication he was feeling out a potential run for president.
