Not long after winning the coveted Heisman trophy on Saturday, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, 21, found himself apologizing for tweets he sent as a teenager. A series of tweet of Murray calling someone "queer" resurfaced, causing a frenzy, despite it being roughly six years old.

According to USA Today, the tweets remained on Murray's verified Twitter account late Saturday night but were eventually deleted sometime Sunday morning.

Murray took to the social media platform to apologize for his "poor choice of words"

Murray was the second consecutive University of Oklahoma player to receive the Heisman trophy. Last year, quarterback Baker Mayfield won the highly coveted trophy, Sporting News reported.

Murray, who is also a baseball player, signed a $4.66 million contract with the Oakland Athletics to play for them this upcoming season, ESPN reported.
