Editors note: The following was written by Regis Giles

Females, I have breaking news for our gender.  We are in no way as strong as men physically, considering that we are talking about the average size of most human beings.  That’s right I said it.  As far as Mother Nature is concerned we stand at a biological disadvantage when it comes to strength.  This makes the reality of a violent crime committed against our gender much more likely than that of the opposite sex.  Duh.

One of the most recent crimes against a woman, that is now being nationally recognized, is Lauren Spierer’s missing person case.  On June 3rd 2011, Lauren was last seen walking home alone from a night out with her friends.  She stands at 4 feet 11inches and has blonde hair and blue eyes.

In a recent discovery, the police thought they had found Miss Spierer’s body floating in Fall Creek, close to where Lauren lives, but instead it was yet another victimized woman.

So to reiterate, in the search for Lauren, the police found a decomposing body in a creek which they thought to be her.  Am I the only one out here who thinks that is insane?  Now not only do police have a missing person to find, they also have to figure out what happened to the poor girl found in the creek. This illustrates my point perfectly concerning the need for women to rise up against the apparent covert war going on against the more delicate half of the human race.
In the year 2005 approximately 3 women were killed every day in the United States, and in 2006 about 600 women were raped or sexually assaulted each day.   Why aren’t more people calling women to action? Why aren’t more women taking the necessary steps to protecting their own lives?

Ladies, just because we are smaller and weaker than men does not mean we have to be sitting ducks for violent crimes.
There are plenty of organizations out there who help raise awareness for violent crimes committed against women such as womenshealth.gov and takebackthenight.org, yet they lack a certain crucial step in their curriculum and that is PREVENTION! Sure, they are there after the someone has been victimized but what about avoiding the victimization in the first place.  It is estimated that over 8.5 billion dollars of tax payer’s money is spent every year dealing with crimes against women.  These costs include everything from law enforcement to medical and counseling expenses.  We could see a large reduction in these expenses if women just simply learned how to defend themselves.

Yes, these organizations may hand out mace or rape whistles once a year, but they sure don’t teach women how to choke out an attacker on a weekly basis like the Valente Brothers do at their jiu-jitsu academy in Miami.
Look, this is the point my fellow females: take matters into your own hands.  We have to level the playing field and arm ourselves to the maximum in order to have a fighting chance.  Immediate danger requires immediate response and if you don’t feel like getting beaten on, raped, or killed, then here are some suggestions for you:

1. The easiest and fastest method to avoiding a bad situation is the buddy system.  You are more likely to not be attacked when you are in a group.  Attackers look for an easy target, which means they are looking for those who are smaller, weaker and laser in on those who get separated from the pack.  This is exactly the case with Lauren Spierer.   Only 3 blocks from her home, she decided to walk there by herself, and police are still trying to find her.

2. Be smart and alert.  The worst thing you can do is to not be aware of your surroundings.  This leaves you an unsuspecting target, which makes the attacker’s job much easier.  You are just asking for something bad to happen to you if you are not alert.  Be aware of the people walking in front of you and behind you, don’t have your head buried in your touch phone.  When you walk into a room know the exits and the different roads that lead you out of that place.  Also be aware of someone staring you down, they may not have your best interests in mind.

3. Learn self-defense and keep learning.  Taking one or two classes on how to defend yourself or watching YouTube videos does not make you an expert.  Girls, train yourself to be lethal with your hands.  The best martial art by far, for self-defense, is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.  It allows the smaller, weaker person to use leverage against their opponent rather than strength.  I have been training jiu-jitsu for 10 years now and I don’t plan on stopping, you should do the same for yourself.

4. Read the book Raising Righteous and Rowdy Girls by Doug Giles.  It’s my dad’s method of how he raised me and my sister Hannah Giles and I can tell you that it works.

Now learning how to fight and be aware of your surroundings does not mean bad things are not going to happen to you. It does, however, eliminate the probability and better yet, if you run into a sticky situation you will at least be able stand your ground.  The average criminal isn’t looking to fight with their victims, they want easy targets.

That being said the courage and boldness you obtain from learning a martial art, how to shoot, throw knives, or point a taser is irreplaceable.  Sometimes it is all you need to deal with a possible perpetrator.

Again, the point is to do something about your defenseless situation.  Don’t just read this article and say “oh that’s nice” or “I should really do this” and then not do anything.  Take action and do it now.  Come on ladies! Enough is enough, don’t become a victim.  Do it now before it’s too late and the nation sees your photo being displayed on national news because you went missing.
