Mitt Romney: Trail Blazer

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

You’ve got to hand it to Mitt Romney (and his acolytes). At the very least he’s a Republican trailblazer.

There aren’t many Republicans who can “boast” a record of healthcare mandates, taxpayer-funded abortions for just $50/kill, proclamations applauding “gay youth pride day,” appointing homosexual activist judges, supporting Jimmy Carter and Paul Tsongas, and opposing the Bush tax cuts.

Come to think of it, Romney might be the only Republican who can boast such a record.

Just as Romney has spent more money than any Republican in history to win the Republican presidential nomination, and all he has to show for it is a 6-19 record when his name is on the ballot. Obviously Romney really believes in job creation and growing the economy, because he keeps coming back for more and more conservative rejection in a “valiant” effort to keep the often downtrodden and unfairly loathed political hack class gainfully employed—lest everyone else ponder what’s the point to paying for such hackneyed advice.

Romney’s personal portfolio indicates he’s got the Midas touch when it comes to making the right investments, except when it comes to investing in his own presidential aspirations. But despite all this rejection Romney remains. Apparently the party establishment propping him up and whitewashing his liberal record in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts have decided Romney is too big to fail, just like the bailouts and crony capitalists they and Romney support.

Refusing to rest on his laurels, an overachieving Romney sunk to a new low reached new heights by launching the phoniest attack against a campaign rival this cycle.

Romney – through his supporters – is now attacking Newt Gingrich on his loyalty (or lack thereof) to Ronald Reagan. That’s right, the man who once bragged to Ted Kennedy that he opposed Reagan/Bush and instead supported Carter/Mondale, has now been anointed the Fidelity Czar of the Reagan Legacy by a party establishment that favored Reagan’s ideas and values like George Wallace favored desegregation.

And Romney’s target is a man who fought for Reagan’s agenda for years in the Congress at a time when Romney was under suspicion for impersonating Arlen Specter.

Romney acolytes are even dragging out a clip of a speech of Gingrich allegedly criticizing Reagan back in the day, all the while conveniently forgetting an event held in 1995 when Nancy Reagan literally passed the baton from her husband to Gingrich. By the way, in the speech in question Gingrich is very favorable overall towards Reagan, and his only criticism was that Reagan’s policies weren’t tough enough on the Soviets.

When was the last time you ever saw Romney try to get to the right of anyone on an issue? Wait, don’t answer that.

I’m not the only one that has noticed Romney’s trailblazing hypocrisy here. The man who literally is in charge of maintaining President Reagan’s legacy, his son Michael, had this to say in response to the Romney campaign’s trailblazing desperation and lack of integrity:

“It surprises me that Mitt Romney and his supporters would raise this issue — when Mitt by his own admission voted for Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale who opposed my father, and later supported liberal Democrat Paul Tsongas for president. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney’s achievement was the most socialistic healthcare plan in the nation up until that time.

“Say what you want about Newt Gingrich but when he was Speaker of the House he surrounded himself with Reagan conservatives and implemented a Ronald Reagan program of low taxes and restrained federal spending. Newt’s conservative program created a huge economic boom and balanced the budget for the first time in more than a generation.

“I would take Newt Gingrich’s record any day over Mitt Romney’s.”

At this point Gingrich needs to win the Florida Primary, if for no other reason than the sheer entertainment value of witnessing what desperate and phony ploys Ann Coulter the Romney campaign will contrive next.

Either way, the rest of us can rest assure that Romney’s Republican trailblazing will continue—all the way to the bottom.
