Four Reasons to Vote Romney, if You are a Liberal

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

The other day I got an email from a friend I had known in school. He works with people who have a wasting disease and he wanted to know why he should vote for Romney. I omit his name and other details because he asked that I keep his correspondence private.

He probably had some funny idea that I'd make fun of him on Sunday.

The following is my non-humorous reply:

This is my second decade working in politics. I can tell you that you are wrong about one thing: Politicians just aren't normal people. They are like actors on steroids, always on stage. They subsume their entire personality to politics and become plastic. The higher you go in politics, the worse it becomes.

There are honorable exceptions.

But not many.

George W. Bush was one.

I've not personally observed many Democrat leaders behind the scenes to know who their honorable exceptions might be. But they have some too.

I take exception to the use of the word privileged when talking about some of our citizens. They either worked hard to create their success or someone did on their behalf.

They may have more than some folks, but then so do all of us. Who is to say that we aren’t privileged? Who gets to decide who is privileged and who is not? In a prefect society we all rise by our own merit.

This concludes the lecture portion of the email.

Four reasons to vote for Romney, if you are a liberal:

1) Romney has successful executive experience that Obama lacks. One of the most legitimate complaints regarding Obama is that he doesn't know how to make decisions or even how to best utilize the people around him. The presidency is an executive office in which the most important requisite is getting people to do their part. Romney can do that; Obama has shown he can not. Romney's history is that of an excellent, forward-thinking executive.

2) Romney understands the risks in our banking system and Obama does not. One could take the position that Romney is a Wall Street fat cat, but Obama's administration is filled with guys from Goldman Sachs, etc.

Remember too big to fail? Obama has made the problem worse. Because of actions taken by the administration, not only is systemic financial failure possible, it will be much worse next time. Romney understand the risks to the banking system.

You may not think that's important but our financial system is extremely important to making sure our society works well. Our homes, our schools, hospitals, roads, utilities etc are financed by the system.

3) We can not sustain the level of spending that has characterized the last three decades. Social Security, Medicare are broken and can't be fixed easily. Regarding spending over all, we can tax every millionaire at 100% and it won't cover our spending problem.

The solution is to get our economy going, not impose higher tax rates. An economy growing at just a normal rate would help more than any tax increase.

Romney understands that a growing economy is the key to solving the financial issues facing the country.

4) I know that many people are worried about healthcare, and affordability. I can assure you that ACA doesn't do anything to secure quality healthcare for us. Premiums are rising because of ACA.

The system is designed to cap the dollars spent on healthcare. That means that some client treatment will be based on whether dollars are available. Unfortunately some just won’t get quality care.

Romney has taken a measured approach toward healthcare reform that both the left and the right have supported.

Romney has proven that he can work with Democrats and Republicans.

Obama has not.
