American Crossroads: Yeah, Team Obama is Just “Blowing Smoke”

On Friday, a brand new American Crossroads television commercial will hit airwaves in the following battleground states -- Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia. Here’s the full clip:

There’s really nothing novel about this advertisement. But the fact American Crossroads is spending a whopping $9.3 million to explicitly defend Mitt Romney’s business career is not insignificant. Of course, I’m sure the politically sentient are well aware The One has maliciously distorted Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital – and, of course, spent millions of dollars on false advertising. (Indeed, we’ve covered these revelations ad nauseam). But how many voters in swing states have seen the Washington Post’s exhaustive report concluding that this advertisement, for example, was “misleading, unfair and untrue?” As WaPo’s Jamelle Bouie points out, even if these character assassination attempts aren’t hurting Mitt Romney right now, they could certainly come back to haunt him later in the campaign vis-à-vis what happened to John Kerry in 2004. Better to set the record straight in July while there's still time.

I’ll leave you with this: the American Crossroads accompanying press release:

“Barack Obama can't run on his failed economic record so his whole strategy is trying to put his opponent through the shredder – and even that’s failing because his attacks are misleading,” said American Crossroads communications director Jonathan Collegio. “This ad shows that not only are Obama’s attacks misleading, but that a president would only run runs ads like that when trying to hide a failed record like his.”

Ouch.
