Republicans Give Democrats a Fundraising Gift

Democrats never let an opportunity to help their side pass, while it sure seems like Republicans never miss an opportunity to shoot themselves in the foot. If you want an illustration of the concept of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, just watch Republicans. And the Speaker drama – their latest self-inflicted wound – is no different.

If you’re going to disrupt something, have a plan. If you want to shake things up, doing so for its own sake is just stupid. So, when the GOP ousted the Speaker of the House because a couple of attention-seeking, unaccomplished Members needed some cable news bookings, Democrats took advantage.

The story immediately went from the failure of Democratic Party policies to the inability of Republicans even to manage themselves. Great work.

Soon after, of course, Democrat donors were inundated with fundraising emails and an adrenaline rush that things were looking better for them than they had in quite some time.

“Derek, we’ve reached out 20 times about Barack Obama’s fight to protect our democracy,” a fundraising email from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee opens. “That’s how important this is. And this is not the time to sit on the sidelines, Derek -- now that Republicans have removed McCarthy as Speaker, the future of the country is on the line. So we are asking every grassroots Democrat to STEP UP before it’s too late. We’re calling for $40,000 before the mid-Month deadline to make President Obama proud and support our House Democrats. Will you chip in $3?”

Now, I couldn’t care less about anything related to Barack Obama, but his fake approval matters to people who’d happily use their credit cards to give money to millionaires so they don’t lose their jobs. And the GOP’s circular firing squad was a strong wind in the sails for leftists disheartened by inflation and gas prices.

The public face of House Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries, got permission from the real Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi, to reach out to the brainwashed.

“Derek, I'm calling on 14,855 Democrats to help me prove that, while Republicans have fallen into mayhem, Democrats stand united and ready to reclaim the House majority,” the email from Jeffries starts out. “If we can meet our Mid-Month fundraising goal, it will send a clear message to extreme MAGA Republicans that we are ready to take back the House to continue our work delivering For The People. I'm counting on your support in this defining moment more than you can imagine. We narrowly avoided a government shutdown only weeks ago -- and instead of working on solutions to deliver progress For the People, MAGA Republicans are fighting a Civil War of their own design. I’m asking you to make a choice in this critical moment: We can either let extreme MAGA Republicans govern by chaos and attack our freedoms...Or we can show strength in numbers, meet our mid-month fundraising goal, and prove that Democrats are ready to reclaim the House and get to work. I hope I can count on your $3 to the DCCC in this consequential moment for our party and democracy.”

How many Democrats do you suspect are dumb enough to fall for that? All of them?

Democrats were demoralized by reality, so Republicans changed that reality. It was honestly stupid.

I flipped to MSNBC the other day to see how they were covering the terror attack in Israel, and honestly, they weren’t. They didn’t want to expose how sympathetic they were to the cause of the anti-Semitism, so they spent all the time I watched talking about how the House of Representatives was in disarray.

Republicans need to learn to stop firing down their own trench and not give ammunition to the enemy.

Amazingly, Republicans are even terrible at using what Democrats give to them. The only reason Republicans were doing well was because Democrats had done so poorly; it wasn’t because Republicans managed to message against left-wing failures. The failures of the left were so obvious they couldn’t be denied. If they’d relied on Republicans pointing them out, there’s no question it wouldn’t have been that way.

Republicans should have a good election next year if they could just get out of their own way. Then again, they should’ve had a good election last year and couldn’t, so there’s little reason to have hope for the next one.
