Thomas Sowell
The Fallacy of "Fairness"

If there is ever a contest to pick which word has done the most damage to people's thinking, and to actions to carry out that thinking, my nomination would be the word "fair." It is a word thrown around by far more people than have ever bothered to even try to define it.

This mushy vagueness may be a big handicap in logic but it is a big advantage in politics. All sorts of people, with very different notions about what is or is not fair, can be mobilized behind this nice-sounding word, in utter disregard of the fact that they mean very different things when they use that word.

Some years ago, for example, there was a big outcry that various mental tests used for college admissions or for employment were biased and "unfair" to many individuals or groups. Fortunately there was one voice of sanity-- David Riesman, I believe-- who said: "The tests are not unfair. LIFE is unfair and the tests measure the results."

Arguing with Idiots By Glenn Beck

If by "fair" you mean everyone having the same odds for achieving success, then life has never been anywhere close to being fair, anywhere or at any time. If you stop and think about it (however old-fashioned that may seem), it is hard even to conceive of how life could possibly be fair in that sense.

Even within the same family, among children born to the same parents and raised under the same roof, the first-borns on average have higher IQs than their brothers and sisters, and usually achieve more in life.

Unfairness is often blamed on somebody, even if only on "society." But whose fault is it if you were not the first born? Since some groups have more children than others, a higher percentage of the next generation will be first-borns in groups that have smaller families, so such groups have an advantage over other groups.

Despite all the sound and fury generated in controversies over whether different groups have different genetic potential, even if they all have identical genetic potential the outcomes can still differ if they have different birth rates.

Twins have average IQs several points lower than children born singly. Whether that is due to having to share resources in the womb or having to share parents' attention after birth, the fact is what it is-- and it certainly is not fair.

Many people fail to see the fundamental difference between saying that a particular thing-- whether a mental test or an institution-- is conveying a difference that already exists or is creating a difference that would not exist otherwise.

my siblings and I would complain to Mama about this or that not being fair. "No fair", we would say, and Mama's response was "Whoever told you that life was fair was lieing to you. Life's not fair."

She was a strong, steady person of great character who wanted us to grow up to be responsible, self-reliant citizens. She had an 8th grade education but she was more wise than those who lead our country today and seek all this "justice". "Economic justice" be damned. Stand on your own two feet and be counted as strong among men. "Count for something," is another phrase I remember from my youth.

Thank you so much Mr. Sowell for sharing your voice.

Who the hell does that uppity Thomas Sowell think he is for wandering off the liberal reservation?

When will these conservative blacks learn that we white people know what's best for them?

And that, my friends, is a liberal's idea of "equity," as Jack incorrectly puts it.

Hey Jack: You're a hypocrite.

But then you knew that; it's the oxygen liberals breathe.

Friend, it has come to my attention that the person writing as "Honest Liberal" that I referred you to might well be a satirist...who likes to write such stuff to provoke a response.

Looks like I feel right into it...
If such is the case, my apologies for referring you.

Hmmmm....doesn't change the point though.

If you want to spend some time listening to history relevant to this discussion, sit back and watch this video. You will understand what Mr. Sowell is saying much clearer... Trust me.

I recall during one dbate or discussion obama when asked "why he would raise taxes even though it was proven that it would reduce revenues"
he answered..."because it would be fair"
I'm paraphrasing here

Ditto Sir...ever notice how, when an American of African origin is successful, like Condi, Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, Bill Cosby, etc...some how they are just not black enough...maybe the word is "servile" enough.

These people have no shame...

Make sure and look at the post by Honest Liberal in the discussion of Part 2 of Dr. Sowell's treatise...

Spells it out who and what they are.

The universe (life) is not hostile, nor is it friendly-- it is simply indifferent.

Things just are...life just happens...life is a crapshoot..."fate" is the imagined perception of a pattern, a destiny.

"reply to oracle 1
Clarence Thomas was a beneficiary of affirmative action programs, which helped him get into Holy Cross for his undergraduate education, and the Yale Law School for his legal education. In other words, he was the beneficiary of government policies--yes, that big old evil US government you conservatives loathe--that were designed to bring about 'fair' outcomes. Thomas, of course, never acknowledges this because he knows where his fan base stands on such things."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I know about the AA thing and Clarence Thomas. That said, I cannot fault a guy who came from meager beginnings, made the most of the system to advance, yet still questions that system of AA and seeks to limit it. Anita Hill was a naked attempt by the PC ilk to torpedo him-- he is the Left's worst nightmare.

Would you rather have the ObaMessiah who ALMOST CERTAINLY ALSO WAS AN AA PRODUCT (he has sedulously sequestered his test scores and college grades) who believes strongly in "fairness" wealth redistribution because whitey took advantage of the equally deserving black man to get where he is?

Gates-gate really revealed the inner Obama-- though the Left-stream media shrugged it off because it said too much.

Dr. Sowell has part two of this fine treatise now available on Town Hall.

If you want to see how liberals really feel about Americans of African heritage, check out the post by Honest Liberal...

Its a stunner...honest, but a stunner.

His words will dispel all doubts as to precisely how they really see people of color....(as if there has ever been a doubt about it.)

Perpetual ammo for when they call YOU a racist.

I have always tried to teach my children when they were growing up that life was not fair, so don't fall into that victim trap.

Thank you for putting it into easily understandable terms.

Life is fundamentally fair. I might even observe that life itself is the ultimate fairness, and I would meet the predictably emotional challenges by pointing out that life doesn't care who wins and who loses.
A person who grows up with all the material advantages that most of us lack is likely upon gaining adulthood to complain loudly the first time he or she meets an adverse circumstance. "That's not fair!"
Conversely, a person who grows up without any of those advantages is likely to covet the gains of another, and failing to attain such will be considered 'unfair'.
I am aware of Dr. Sowell's background, but that only makes this particular column especially poignant.
Fairness is mostly a matter of perception and perspective, but the imperative lies in remembering that nobody is alone on this planet.

I confess that I've never been a huge fan of Faulkner--tried two or three times; the writing is worthy of reputation, but the insight has always seemed less. Could just be me, and I should re-read.

Anyway, what is fair about taking from one to give to another? If one person is prohibited from using their gifts to the utmost in-order-to not appear more gifted in music is that fair? Is it right for a person to be prohibited from expressing himself to the fullest, so that another can claim equilateral standing? And in doing so is that not theft?

And by the way, who is the arbiter of fair, that is the arbiter of fair or equilateral outcomes? The State? And what does the state know of the meaning of anything, let alone a humane being? Nothing! Quite right!

Quiz. If someone with an IQ of 200 reaches absolute happiness and someone with an IQ of 80 reaches absolute happiness who is the happier? Neither, quite right, but the state presupposes just such silliness in its deliberations. Thus the superiority in a limited, free, liberty oriented society.

Somewhere, I think, if I recollect correctly, that was one of the illustrations that Faulkner was trying to make in The Sound and the Fury. I'll have to re-read, and find my copy, to be sure.

If so, then it was one of his better moments.

Around where I live, the Navajos say that a man who speaks out of both sides of his mouth is not to be trusted. Better to split his tongue down the middle and let him join his brother.... the snake.

1) You can keep your doctor and won't lose your insurance. SISSSSSSS LIE!

2) The stimulus will create thousands and thousands of jobs and save millions more.
SISSSSSSSSSS LIE!

3) Transparency in government more than any government before him.
SISSSSSSSS LIE!

4) Open hearings and C-Span television on all proceedings.
SISSSSSSSS LIE!

5) NO Lobbyists in his administration.
SISSSSSSS LIE!

My opinion is that Joe Wilson had it right all along, the truth Mr. Obama, YOU LIE!

And this country girl just can't stand lyars!!!

Obviously the Dahmer reference was a metaphor for Massive, Progressive Government.

You essentially argue that MPG is a benign force for good and that conservatives are loony to loath it. You cite an example where the outcome seems to have been more good than bad and use this example to generalize about it's entire nature.

I argue that it is a beast which, having done some good, has also done great harm and which cannot be trusted. It is like fire in that it is sometimes useful when kept small enough and under control.

Evidently, we each view the other as naive.

I guarantee that my cow dog could teach him to heel real fast. Rusty don't take no sass, especially from some left leaning snooty dog, which is what I image Killer to be.

There is nothing that irrates me more than some bow-tied wantabe lawyer, acting like his poo-poo don't stink. And then he has his nose in the air while he tries to lecture the rest of us with how smart he is.

Sounds like Killer is a chip off the old elitist block from which Obambutt came from also. A good drag in the mud from a roped steer would do them both a world of good. Maybe make them see the world from a more humble position - nose down in the dirt or better yet, cow patty.

Dr. Sowell:

Thanks again for such common sense. However, the liberals (socialists, progressives, or whatever they are called) will never understand or agree! For so many people with "intelligence", how come they have so little common sense? Well, perhaps they should study Dr. Sowell's writing more! In addition, they should own a small business and have to meet Friday's payroll! That would "either cure or kill them"! Ha!
