Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The front page of the New York Times has increasingly become the home of editorials disguised as "news" stories. Too often it has become the home of hoaxes.

Going back some years, it was the Tawana Brawley hoax that she had been gang-raped by a bunch of white men. Just a couple of years ago, it was the Duke University "rape" hoax that they fell for.

In between there were the various hoaxes of New York Times reporter Jayson Blair, who was kept on and promoted until too many people found out what he had been doing and the paper had to let him go.

Last month the New York Times created its own hoax with a long front page article about how war veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan were killing people back in the United States because of the stress they had gone through in combat.

That hoax was shot down two days later by the New York Post, which showed that the murder rate among returning war veterans was only one-fifth the murder rate among civilians in the same age brackets.

Undaunted, the New York Times has come up with its latest front-page sensation, the claim that some anonymous people either suspected an affair between Senator John McCain and a female lobbyist or tried to forestall an affair.

But apparently no one actually claimed that they knew there was an affair.

This did not even rise to the level of "he said, she said." Instead it was anonymous sources reporting their suspicions.

People who share the New York Times' political views are treated as "innocent until proven guilty." People with different views are condemned for "the appearance of impropriety," even if there is no hard evidence that they did anything wrong.

In this latest "news" story about Senator McCain, the standard seems to be that anonymous sources suspected him of "the appearance of impropriety."

Nothing is easier than to have suspicions. In my younger years, I was suspected of having an affair with more than one attractive woman when -- alas -- there was nothing happening.

At the time, however, I felt flattered by the insinuations.

In 1976, when President Ford nominated me to the Federal Trade Commission, someone anonymously told an FBI investigator that I was a Communist.

Not even the people opposed to my nomination believed it and it was not reported in the New York Times.

This was back in the days when the Times still had a reputation for integrity, before the Jayson Blair hoaxes, the gang-rape hoaxes and the general prostitution of the front page to politics masquerading as news.

Over the years, the New York Times has increasingly discredited itself.

Not only have critics repeatedly exposed their tendentious use of their "news" stories, even the Times' own "public editor" or ombudsman has now said that they should not have run the McCain insinuation story.

The declining credibility of the New York Times and of other tendentious media is, in one sense, a healthy thing. There has been too much public gullibility that has been cynically exploited by both the media and politicians.

In another sense, however, it is a sad day for the country as a whole that there are shrinking sources of reliable news and informed and honest commentary.

Hysteria has become the norm for too many once-serious publications, whether it has been hysteria for the purpose of hyping circulation or to advance some political agenda.

The rise of alternative media -- notably talk radio -- has limited how much the mainstream media can get away with.

Dan Rather's fake memo about President Bush's National Guard service might have gone unchallenged, and affected an election, back in the old days when the media consisted largely of like-minded colleagues who would not embarrass one of their own.

Bloggers and talk radio shot that one down. But it is doubtful if we have seen the last of the journalistic hoaxes. Not in an election year.

Whaddya expect from Stalin's favorite?
The New York Times in the 1930s was happy to have Walter Duranty hoaxing its readers that Stalin was the greatest living statesman’, and the hoax that the show trials, purges and famines were non-existent, or at least justified by 'you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. The Times still proudly displays the Pulitzer Prize that Duranty won for that pro-Stalinist hoaxing.

Help I've Fallen & Refuse to Get Up!
I agree with you Dr. Sowell. The shrinking repository of factual dissemination of information widely available is more than disconcerting. It's terrifying! Surveys conducted recently have repeatedly shown in what regard journalists are held by the public at large. I believe as a profession, they come in just below used-car salesmen. Where oh where is Sgt. Friday when we need him most. "Just the facts mam."

The New York Times - Irrelevant!
The New York Times is completely irrelevant. They have sided with a particular party and everyone sees it, except them. So when they "report" on a story, I always factor in their bias and then see if I believe what they reported. If it involves a Republican then I immediately dismiss whatever they wrote.

Is that fair? Who cares? It is the reality of the situation. They have chosen to appease the Left and ignore half the country. As a result their subscriptions are dropping like a rock with no end in sight.

The Jayson Blair, Tawana Brawley, and Duke Lacrosse episodes are perfect examples of how the Times has sold it's soul for a cause. A cause that will eventually sink them.

Bad Times
All this controversy with hoaxes and the New York Crimes, I guess now, no one will want to see my exclusive cropped and photoshopped pictures of Bill K being inappropriate with a couple of small furry animals, this could of been the bombshell of all bombshells, the PETA folks would've been proud.

Stupid and Biased...
A lethal combination. Either stupidity or bias alone is bad enough in a journalist. But I rarely see any reporting that is not both these days.

I was a daily newspaper reader for 30 years, but finally kicked the habit when it felt like my subscription fee might as well have been donated directly to the DNC.

Thanks goodness for the internet.

jono64a was quite correct
in his commnets about the communist branch of social-fascism. I might add that since the early 1900s, they've been attempting to destroy the Constitutional Republic of the USA and recently have had some success.

Times has been nothing but a propaganda tool of the left for years. This rag is just spouting the rants of it's CEO Arthur Sulzberger. Artie is ex hippie 60's radical with an self hating American attitude. America is finally seeing that this is nothing but an extension of the DNC.

It is not just the times
If you look at any media be it TV, Radio, or newspapers, you see the exact same thing, what they have done is to take on the formula of the national enquirer which at one time and still may be the most read paper in this country. You give people what they want which is scandal, murder, corruption. The media in this country has done a huge disservice to us for a long time, and it is not just the liberal NY times it is all of them.

It was the best of Times
It is the worst, The Times.

Blame Woodward and Bernstein
Every so often someone comes along who is unique to his profession, and makes his name by doing a defined job in an unusual way. He then ruins the next two generations in that profession, as everyone else in that profession who is NOT in the right place and/or NOT a uniquely talented individual attempts to replicate that one-off situation.

Woodward and Bernstein screwed up two generations of journalists who have tried to be the first on their block to have a movie made about them starring handsome movie stars. Bobby Orr screwed up two generations of defencemen who stopped doing their job and started trying to score goals. In both cases, once the unique character was removed from the team, it was much better functioning when people went back to doing their own jobs.

Profblog
Cute!

AudiR10
That's hilarious! Has anyone ever compared Woodward and Bernstein with Bobby Orr before this? I haven't even heard Bobby Orr's name in a few decades (probably because I now follow only soccer), but back in the early 70s I heard nothing but gushing admiration for him.

Is there
anything good that comes from NY anymore. And don't bore me with the NY Giants. Look who they played! I'll bet the Times wrote an article saying the Giants beat the best team ever in the history of Football. HAHAHA

the fact is
when people buy it & read it

they are chosing to sell (their souls)...

the very fabric of what made this country free.

from that day forward, we are prisoners

and find fault with our decision, but lash out

at others, instead.

in retrospect, was it 'a good thing?'

Pathetic Times readers
It's amazing how people who read the Times imagine they are well-informed. Recently, one such leftist was in distress. Although thinking she was well-informed about events in Italy because of her Times reading, she hadn't heard about the Amanda Knox case. How had I heard about it? she asked.

Easy. I read foreign media. There's nothing easier than starting the day looking at the news on our Yahoo, then getting onto their international page and looking at Yahoo from other countries to see their news.

People who get their foreign news from our media only are pathetic. It was really hard to avoid this thirty years ago when I first started. It meant either (1) buying an expensive shortwave radio, or (2) going to the nearest big library to see a week-old edition of the Times of London. Today, it is so easy to get foreign news from their source via the Internet.

There's just no reason to use the Times anymore.

New York Times and the National Enquirer
JFP writes:

"It's amazing how people who read the Times imagine they are well-informed."

You know what's even more pathetic? The amount of people out there who read "The National Enquirer" and believe the articles therein.

I personally don't read the New York Times, but from what I see with all the examples of dishonesty and bias, the New York Times could probably more accurately compared to the National Enquirer than any other newspaper. They are certainly in the same league. The only real difference seems to be the respectability that the New York Times once had. At least the National Enquirer makes no pretenses about what it is.

News on the internet
Drudge has links to many foreign and domestic newspapers, each with their own slant.

Here also. http://www.trythinking.net

Read papers from all over the world, compare their slants, check their facts, and you can be pretty sure that somewhere in the middle is something resembling the truth. Oh, and NEVER jump to early conclusions.

There are sites such as trythinking that have links to all sorts of factual information, resources and opinion. There is np reason to buy one paper and assume you are informed.

check your news sources!
A good recent test were the stories yesterday of a woman on an American Airlines flight who was reportedly denied oxygen and then the two oxygen bottles supplied were both empty. I heard it from two different Canadian news agencies (not counting the CBC in whom I have zero trust, having been close to a couple of stories and seeing them mis-report).

And then on O'Reilly last night it was disclosed that a doctor (cardiologist?) was seeing to her care on the aircraft and the cabin crew quite rightly deferred to him, even when he tried an unorthodox way of introducing the oxygen to her. I guess "airline makes a mistake!" is more newsworthy than "doctor makes a mistake!"

Either way, a tragedy.

AudiR10 -- 7:17 a.m. post

Audi: I don't know if the "blame Woodward & Bernstein" insight is original to you, but it's the first time I've encountered it. It's brilliant. Thanks for your post.

Thomas Sowell a Communist?!!
Now there's one for a good laugh!

Oh yeah?
The New York Times is this country's newspaper of record. It is the Grey Lady. It is the most trusted source for news in the world since Walter Cronkite retired. You neocon fascists just wish the Times was biased, because you can't handle the truth!

You want bias? Go watch Faux News or listen to idiots like the drug abuser Limbaugh, anchor baby Malkin, Tranny Anny Mann Coulter, or Hannity. That's where you'll find bias!

And I get so sick and tired of hearing about Jayson Blair and Dan Rather. Jayson Blair should still be reporting the truth if it weren't for racists like the writer of this column who ran him out, merely because of his skin color. And how many times does Dan Rather have to explain that the documents, while possibly fake, were actually accurate? Sheesh! You treasonous repugs need to get a clue. All the lies are coming from this administration, you idiots! When will you ever learn that the brainless idiot Bush has masterminded the most complex conspiracy for world domination? Never, that's when, because you can't handle the truth!

OK, OK! Sarcasm off!

I just wanted to beat the moonbats to this one.

Geez, that was fun!

SSGT
The Giants are actually from New Jersey these days.

But, that being said, the Giants OWNED the Patsies, just like the Times owns the Boston Globe.

Like-minded colleagues
You've hit the nail on the head. The NYT has only itself to blame. Without true debate. The newspaper went flabby and lazy. This liberal media had power and instead of using it to print Truth it printed an agenda.

M Sederoff
Actually, Doctor Sowell has written frequently that he was an avowed socialist in his younger years. Evidently, he is a living example of 1Corinthians 13:11.

Media in general
I think what we may be witnessing is a total transformation of American media. It may be that ten years from now the NY times doesn't even exist, or does so in such pathetic irrelevance it will be indecipherable among Moveon.org and dailykos. The major networks stand to have sway for some time to come, but even the audiences for the six o'clock network news programs have been declining and will continue to do so. Even terrestial radio likely will not have the same impact in the near future, with podcasting being the new frontier. The point is the old business model as it relates to media is fastly becoming obsolete. With information available at a moment's notice the next generation will access news at their convenience rather than making an appointment to read the morning paper or to watch the nightly news. Hopefully that will translate to more people being informed and engaged intellectually rather than believing everything they read in the NYT and hear and see on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and all the other outlets that hold themselves out to be objective yet are little more than lefty propagandists.

Shrinque

The network news has been losing 3-4% of its audience for over a decade. Katie Couric has added to the loss by decreasing CBS Evening News by 10% since she became anchor.

All the big liberal newspapers are in trouble. LA Times is bankrupt and for over a year, it has been firing staff left and right. The NYTimes can't support itself by ads and cut its own format by 2 inches last year. It has laid off or fired over 500 people since 2004. A stockholders' revolt led by Morgan Stanley was deflected, but a new one is rising as the stock has dropped from $50+ in 2000 to low $teens today. The Boston Globe is owned by the Times and is now a drag on the Times, too. The Chicago Tribune was sold two years ago and hasn't produced anything noteworthy since.

Liberal radio has withered on the vine. The Green/Feminist Network closed when it couln't ever secure more than 12 affiliates even with all the whacko college radio stations available, and Air America is in its second bankruptcy organization. No one wants to listen to it.

Except that the liberal old guard marches on, liberal media is not popular or economically successful, but it still has enormous impact and may be worth up to 15% pts. in any election for Dems.

Sowell represents what he crticizes
“In another sense, however, it is a sad day for the country as a whole that there are shrinking sources of reliable news and informed and honest commentary.”

Sowell is actually absolutely correct with the above statement, it’s just too bad Sowell doesn’t repudiate the misinformation and smear tactics peddled on both sides of the political aisle. I find it interesting that Sowell dismissively referenced the New York Post in his column. The New York Post epitomizes the tabloid driven, right wing shock journalism that can be seen on Fox News and other media creations of Rupert Murdoch. Yet Sowell has never written about Murdoch’s perversion and influence of the American media.

I’m sure people like Sowell just sit around waiting for left leaning publications like the New York Times to screw up, while ignoring that the New York Post, Fox News and other right wing media outlets screw up and smear every single day. Sowell wants to talk about bias while representing it, this is typical, to be expected, and very unoriginally cliché by the pseudo intellectual. Continue to enjoy the propaganda

I guess not! Go read the last few lines.

Beware the Messengers....
Whether you agree or disagree with the news bringers of today, caution is advised.

Knowing the difference in truth and hype is becoming more and more difficult daily, even for those who are diligently trying to stay informed.

Politicians of all flavors along with the media bombard us with information but it has become increasingly evident that none of them are above distorting the truth for their own purposes.

For most Americans that vote, decisions will be made on bits and pieces of information they hear on the evening news or from people they associate with, or maybe just on a political ad they happen to see.

I guess we can blame the "Founding Fathers" for giving us so much Freedom through the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We, as a nation have experienced so much latitude that we have not been vigilant and have allowed those that govern to intrude into places in our lives where they were never intended to be.

So what if I don't have health insurance. Whose fault is that? Could it be that, maybe I did not take care of business, or that I am just too young to know that I am at risk of getting sick, or that I chose to spend my money on some other priority?

Why should I expect the government to see to my business via your pocketbook? I don't and you shouldn't either. Government does not "GIVE" anything because it has nothing to give, except what it "TAKES" from all of us.

Health insurance is just one of many areas that government has no business and is just one example of government's increasing desire to micromanage the lives and liberties of "We the People".

New York Times
Since my cockatiel died last year and I do not operate a fish market,I have no need for the NYT.
If I want their type of news,I can tune in to the network and cable news and get the same tripe.
Being,for years,the "newspaper of record",they have sadly failed in the past few years.Their main reason for being today is;
1.To destroy G.W.Bush
2.To debase the United States
3.To destroy the Republican party
4.To villify conservatives
5.To promote the Democratic Party
6.To promote liberalism
7.To advance the cause of Socialism

Bad Times
The NY Giants have offices and training facilities at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

The Dallas Cowboys have been in Irving, TX for over 20 years. They are moving to Arlington, TX as soon as the new stadium is built.

Many other teams have their offices in the smaller cities which make up their suburbs. No big deal.

Great article Dr. Sorrel.

The Times is truly despicable. They printed the stories revealing the FISA programs, outed our secret prisons, print all the lies and innuendos about the present administration, and generally quote the DIMS talking pints day in and day out.

It is no wonder the sheeple in this country hate President Bush, they have read and heard noting but negative stories about him and his administration since he took office.

This type of journalism all started with Cronkite’s like that we had lost the Vietnam War after TET ’68 when our military actually decimated the Viet Cong and defeated the NVA at Hue.

It is nothing new for a newspaper to be liberal or have a socialist bent. It is when they lie to the public to make that view the truth that the trouble begins.

I am still mad as hell that from Vietnam to now we do not get any reporting on our fine young women and men serving our country. Has the military quit giving decorations for valor? No, these communist dogs in the media simply will not report on them. The heroes are there, we just will never hear about them from the Democrats or their left wing media.

Agendas
I find it disgusting what the media has evolved to. Once upon a time, news was just that. News.

Today, its veiled opinion, rather than news. Its at every level. From the local level on up.

The N.Y. times and many other big papers used to stake their reputation on the accuracy and quality of their editorial content. Nowdays, they've forsaken this standard in favor of stumping issues of opinion according to political agenda.

Internationally, we recall Reuters doctoring photos to further Hezbollah sympathy. AP seems to provide only less-than-accurate body count reporting.

When newspapers start preaching their own agenda as "news", in a clever, slanted manner, there are going to be well-meaning citizens who simply are not able to pick up on what they're really reading.

Dealing with facts and reality may not be easy, but it beats the heck out of having to deal with and make key decisions based on semi-truths and empty innuendos. This is what appears to drive today's media...and it's scary.

Forum Question
Please forgive my ignorance - but simply dismissing the MSM from it's bias's and false reporting is one thing - but isn't there some stipulation in the Constitution/Bill of Rights/Law about special privileges for the press? Aren't they granted some special immunity or some such treatment because of their ability to report to the people or because they act as a defacto representative of the people?

Any confirmation on this?

Thought you had a seizure overnight. Glad I read the whole thread.

I am just waiting. . .
I am just waiting for someone like Nancy Pelosi to start screeming and crying for a government bail-out for the left-wing clowns at the NYT. It could be run by the DNC. . . oh wait it already is. . . Well, if I were the NY Times I would be demanding my money from the DNC for services rendered over the past decade, that would be enough money to keep them afloat until 2012.

Did Kerry Have a Girlfriend?
Am I the only one who remembers Drudge reporting in 2004 that John Kerry had an affair with a young campaign staffer? The girl's boyfriend was the source and her father refused to deny it.

Here's my point on the MSM. There was nearly a total news blackout regarding this bombshell. Not even Fox (for you wacky libs) reported it. There was talk by the MSM that there is a story out there but it didn't reach their lofty standards. The MSM lectured us that they do not report rumor and innuendo. The NYT certainly hushed it up.

Here's the point. The Kerry affair story had someone saying that they actually knew it happened, rather than simply a couple of staffers expressing concerned. The Kerry story had more credibility than the McCain/NYT story yet every media outlet led with this story. No media bias? Riiiiiiight!

Whenever I get a phone call
from a NY Times sales rep wanting to know if I'd like to purchase the Times, I respond, "Why? My dog defecates outside in the yard."

I assume you have indoor plumbing, the third use for the Times does not apply.

Those three valid uses are why I call my hometown viewspaper The Charlotte Absorber.

No wonder its readership is dropping....
The NY Times drop in readership is because of this kind of reporting. The staff should stop blaming the internet.

Rob
“Sowell produced many solid examples to back up his claims. You have any??
And I mean any that measure up to the egregious false claims that the NYT has made. Please share them”

Fox news was the first major media outlet to falsely assert that Obama attended a Muslim madrassa as a child. The New York Post also ran an article on February 14th 2007 where in “error”, it used the name Osama instead of Obama in an article discussing the democratic primaries. Ironically the president of Fox news Roger Ailes made this same mistake in a meeting when referring to Obama. The New York Post was also considered the least credible news paper in New York City according to the following Pace University study. http://appserv.pace.edu/emplibrary/pace_poll_061604.pdf.

Also one only need look at the opinion broadcasters of Fox News to see the blatant bias of that network Neil Cavuto is a conservative, Joe Gibson is a conservative, Brit Hume is a conservative, Bill O’reilly is a conservative (despite lying about it ), and Sean Hannity is a conservative. The only opinion broadcaster that offers a liberal opinion (if you want to call it that) is the pathetic Alan Colmes.

NYT heading toward TMZ's world
Next we'll see New York Times reporters running alongside TMZ reporters and other tabloid journalists trying to catch the next juicy story regarding Britney Spears or Paris Hilton or some other celebrity. They're loosing credibility so fast the only people who will talk to them are crazy left wing nuts, so they have to start making up sources and stories.

Just vote with your dollars; boycott the New York Times (don't buy the newspaper and don't visit their website). That will quickly make them a distant memory.

"the brainless idiot Bush has masterminded the most complex conspiracy for world domination". Excellent spoof....I think you had everyone going. This is to very typical. Can you imagine a brainless idiot that can mastermind the most complex conspiracy?????? Quite a feat for a brainless idiot.

Action vs Intent
Last week Dr Sowells column regarded the Lefts support for Fascists ideology in its early years. While that was interesting, in and of itself, it seemed of little consequence to me. My concerns are not so much with what a movement believes but in the self-righteous intensity of its beliefs and with what they are, therefore, willing to do to advance those beliefs. I have long warned of a similarity between the Left today and the Fascists of the past but that similarity is not one of ideology; it is one of self-righteousness.

The Fascist did not, after all, understand themselves to be the bad guys. They believed they were the good guys and they believed they were saving Europe. They believed that with such self-righteous intensity that they ultimately felt justified in committing some truly atrocious acts to promote those beliefs. That is the slippery slope I see the Left engaged in today, only one example of which is the NYT’s propensity to misuse its position in the news media to advance the political ideology of its editorial positions. Like the Fascist, they fervently believe in the righteousness of their cause and it is that, not the cause itself, that is dangerous.

Thanks Dr. Sowell!
Our press is only free now because of the internet! The socialist/liberal propaganda-meisters have been filling American's head with tripe for years. The masses have become mind-numbed robots. Control the media...control the message. Who cares that the message for the most part is biased, slanted, fabricated, lies? Thank God for the conservatives on the internet. Otherwise, there would be no alternative to these fear-mongering liars!

Ohh, Anthony so little so late...
It's so great you have ONE supposed conservative source to harp on. Here you go muscle mind...here's over 60+ examples of slants and lies in the media. The list is far to long to individually post. However as this article indicates...it ain't just the NY Times, CBS, The New Republic, AP, CNBC...

Why do we still have Print papers?
It's not very green.

Pronouncing Obama
(was that a movie?) was another stumbling block for Ted Kennedy, the BBC, and others. David Letterman, no conservative, had fun with it. It appears to be a bipartisan issue.

That would be John Gibson at FNC. I would qualify that O'Reilly is not as conservative as some, although he does make the liberal Gerald Rivera look silly on illegal immigration. Greta Van Sustern is liberal, at least on some subjects. David Schuster (gasp) used to be at FNC.

Now compare to the staffs at MSNBC and CNN, where there are very few conservatives.

One of the most invidious examples
of the New York Slimes agenda is its practice of including the political party designation of politicians either in the headline or first paragraph of a story about wrongdoing when they are republicans but, fail to mention the party affiliation or mention it only at the end of the article when they are a democrat. The AP follows this same practice. The Associated democrat Party press is about as devoid of objective reporting as the New York Slime.

Good Morning!

CREDIBLE Liberal Media is getting to be AWFULLY SCARCE, regardless of what Racists like Anthony Thomas say. Why is it that The Green Party (The DNC) MURDERS millions of trees every year to print lies.

Mrs Paddy
great parody of the wreck! Now you need to come up with one on the death of the "Grey Lady"!

Georgetwin
good day to ya! They only care about "Green" when it suits them. You know, like drilling for erl and all..

The Times

A yellow rag with an expensive paint job which paint is running leaving it exposed as to it's true condition. The NYT has been an orifice of the left since forever.

As one poster reminded us (1930), they have a very long history of supporting socialist and other lost causes. A pox on them and any believers or supporters of that trash excuse for reporting.

SSGT
Thanks. Don't know if the Grey Lady is worth the trouble, but I'll think on it some. :)

AudiR10
How dare you compare Woodward and Bernstein with Bobby Orr. At least Bobby Orr had at least a modicum of talent in his chosen profession. (OK, a lot more than that, but you get the idea.)

SSGT
Recently we were given a free sample of one of the GREEN light bulbs. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE the instructions for its disposal! They stop just short of a Bio-Hazard Suit.

Are Enviro-Liberals BORN STUPID or do they get that way from DRUG ABUSE?

Georgetwin
At 11:53AM you said: "... regardless of what Racists like Anthony Thomas say."

I'm curious as to why you think Anthony is a racist. I didn't get that in my reading of his posts.

Rick42
Maybe that isn't the right word to convey my thoughts. My point was that NO MATTER WHAT Dr. Sowell writes, AT can be counted on to denigrate it and/or Dr. Sowell.

R.I.P. - feudalistic NYTimes
The NYTimes said, "Senator John McCain of Arizona is the only Republican who promises to end the George Bush style of governing from and on behalf of a small, angry fringe."
In other words, anyone who doesn't agree with the VDM's (Vestigial Dinosaur Media) agenda is marginalized, dehumanized, and demonized (a la Joseph Goebbels's propaganda tactics based on Nazi philosopher Carl Schmitt's writings) as a "small, angry fringe".
Both "left" and "right", DEM and GOP use these types of wannabe-clever political strategy routinely. It is precisely these types of strategies and tactics of personal destruction that the American public, both "left" and "right" has come to be 100% fed up with. But does the public's weariness with this BS cause the fascist establishment media to back off from it's wannabe-clever tactics of personal destruction? Oh, hell no. Quite to the contrary, instead of becoming quieter and more subtle, because, like the Clintons, they truly believe the public is too stupid to see what's going on, they inevitably become even louder and more shrill and overbearing.
The other three branches of government operate in exactly the same way: when their elitist feudalistic plans aren't working out well for them, they ALWAYS opt for more draconian feudalistic controls instead of more individual freedom. As J.R.R. Tolkien pointed out with his ingenious metaphor, the One Ring (of political Power), that's the inherently evil and inevitably corrupting nature of the Beast.
It is only fitting and appropriate that the public should vote on the NYTimes BS with their subscription dollars. The gravitational forces and effects of Nature's free market couldn't "happen to" a nicer bunch of arrogant and elitist control-freak vermin.

Georgetwin
The reason for the brain-dead drama from the enviro-whackos is simple:
1. They cannot smoke the whacky stuff. To do so would destroy by nature.
2. Since they must find a substitute smoke, they recycle doggy doo, dry it out, then bong it up.

Journalism
With all the stories mentioned in Dr. Sowell's article here and all the others like them (Like Peter Arnett's thoroughly discredited (read: fraudulent) "Sarin Gas in Vietnam" story on CNN in the late 90s) can we please stop hearing how journalism is an "honorable profession?"

Please?

This is probably the first article I've seen -- the harsher columnists like Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter aside -- where a story about bad reporting didn't include some mention of journalism being an "Honorable Profession." It is not. It never has been. Yes, there have been honorable people in it, but the profession itself is not.

And it isn't as though this is anything particularly new. It's always been this way, but now, with the internet and amatures being able to check the facts of a story, people are getting caught in the lies. Consider, for instance, the American reporting of the Tet Offensive in 1968. To the reporters it was a disaster for the American troops and the South Vietnamese. But in real life (and after a few days of fighting) it was an American rout of the VC.

Reporters and news agencies report on things that will (a) sell papers or get viewers or listeners and (b) promote the editor's agenda. Period. It's always been that way. The problem is that it's packaged and sold in such a way as to appear that it's "Just the facts" and that the reporting is honest, balanced, and nigh infallible. And for decades we bought it, hook, line, sinker, lock, stock and barrell (and we don't even fish or hunt).

Journalism has not gotten any less honorable over the years, it's just fallen under more scrutiny, so the lies are more apparent.

New York Times?
Just another Main Source Media that spoon feeds censored Pablem to stroke Liberals.

If Liberals could face the every day reality of what really happens in this world the NYT would be going broke at a faster rate than it can downsize.

Here is some News that Liberals need to be sheltered from!

“ I have that madman on my mind sometimes and that was the cause for the mistake and was not meant to disparage Obama”

Do really believe that? If that is the case, how come no liberal publication has ever made that mistake? Also, you completely ignored the Pace University study about the Post. You also ignored that Fox News falsely reported that Obama attended a Muslim seminary when he was a child. Does this not count as a “blatant and intentional claim” that mirrors the journalistic errors made by the New York Times Also, as I said earlier, Fox News opinion broadcasters are overwhelmingly conservative, you ignored that as well.

Oh, I get it, Republican publications just make “mistakes”, Liberal publications commit defamation. Give me a break Rob, now YOU are representing BIAS COMMENTARY that Sowell criticizes in his column.

The Times is NOT irrelevant
The NYT is still the source for most of the other papers in the country and the MSM for what is important for them to report. If the Times doesn't carry it, it isn't news.

Therefore, the Times is still dangerously relevant and shaping the opinion of the many Americans who still rely on the major networks for their news.

Rick42 - - - racists
I don't know how long you've been reading and posting here, but Anthony Thomas has a history of using virulent ad hominem against each and every black columnist on Townhall for being "Self-Hating House Negro Sellouts" and the like.

For Anthony, it is inconceivable to be both black and republican at the same time. Something HAS to be wrong with that picture, and he can not accept that it might be his own world-view.

I'm not sure whether you want to call that "racist" (prejudiced based on race) or just "polical-ist" (prejudiced based on politics). But given that this sort of political prejudice is only manifested against republicans of a certain race, I think "racist" is perfectly apropos.

Shrinque
Of course Dr. Sowell was a socialist. So were Hayek and Mises at one time or another. For that matter, I went through my own anarcho-communist phase (when I make a mistake, I do it in a BIG way... forget Marx, go straight to Bakunin!)

I think of childhood communism the same way I think of bed wetting, something embarrassing we all went through and had to get over to become adults, but something better left unmentioned.

SSGT

Georgetwin and Unca Alby
Thanks for the heads up. I'm not a regular, so you presumed correctly.

Georgetwin: re AT
AT is a manipulative control freak sophist. Any person who would refer to Dr. Sowell as "self-hating" (as in "Uncle Tom") is, by definition, a manipulative control-freak jerk not worthy of attempting to have a meaningful dialogue with. AT is the prototypical example of Goebbelsian/Schmittian rhetorical manipulativeness.
I have watched his posts for some time, and never ceased to be amazed at how many otherwise intelligent and well meaning people try to interact with him in good faith.
I truly believe that to be an utter waste of time. His "blacker than thou" blather is blessedly shorter when nobody responds to it.
It's not that I disagree with what laughingly passes as AT's "philosophy" of life - that part is no problem whatsoever - it's that AT is a self-absorbed ad hominem jerk who should be required to debate Sowell face to face, mano a mano, because it would be instantaneously plain for all to see what an ignorant, disordered, intellectually dishonest, and manipulative jerk AT truly is. Unfortunately, my guess is that Sowell wouldn't bother to waste his time, which is all the more reason for the rest of us TownHall-ers to simply ignore AT's BORING "special needs" BS.

writes, "As J.R.R. Tolkien pointed out with his ingenious metaphor, the One Ring (of political Power), that's the inherently evil and inevitably corrupting nature of the Beast."

An apt metaphor. The islamofascists would be the orcs and goblins serving the dark lord himself. Liberals would be the evil men serving him but, thinking they are fighting for conquest of their hated brethren and to be able to order things when the victory is complete. They do not understand their peril. Where is Gandalf? I think we just nominated Saruman to be our leader.

unca alby

It’s perfectly fine for any individual of any RACE to believe in conservative or liberal ideology. But Sowell only attacks liberals and blacks for unscrupulous behavior. He ignores unscrupulous behavior amongst the conservative circle he obviously worships, this is why I mentioned Rupert Murdoch in my original post. Sowell wants to criticize the journalistic errors at the “New York Times”, but Sowell wants to ignore the journalistic errors and tabloid right wing propaganda at the “New York Post”.

This sort of selective criticism is typical of the bias shenanigans that Sowell has historically engaged in, not just in reference to the media, but also in reference to race, the economy, and other significant subjects that affects Americans of ALL colors. If pointing out Sowell’s blatant bias in regards to these matters makes me a “racist” or "polical-ist", then call me a “racist “, "polical-ist" or whatever you want.

"If pointing out Sowell’s blatant bias in regards to these matters makes me a “racist” "

There's nothing wrong with criticism.

But criticizing a person whilst calling him a "self-hater" among other race-specific insults, yes, that makes you a racist.

Hitchhiker : McCain is no Saruman
This is off-point from Sowell's article, but in my opinion, McCain is more like Saruan's "Igor", Grima Wormtongue. Ever notice how McCain has that same strategic, practiced faux-soft, faux-benign manipulation-based voice used by the likes of feudalists Tom Daschle and Harry Reid?
I have a serious allergic reaction against arrogant, abrasive and manipulative little wattle-necked banty roosters, like McCain, who are so sure they are a higher form of life than I am, especially when the polar opposite is true.
The fact that McCain is frantically competing for possession of the One Ring proves my point: like Gandalf, I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

Bubba
"This type of journalism all started with Cronkite’s like that we had lost the Vietnam War after TET ’68 when our military actually decimated the Viet Cong and defeated the NVA at Hue."

Well, actually, "decimate" means "to reduce by 1/10th." What we did was Destroy the VC as a fighting force. Or Devastate the VC. (Perhaps this is just a word-weenie note.) After '68 Tet, that overwhelming victory for US forces, all the fighting was against NVA infiltrators from the North.

A Marine I know once confronted Cronkite about it; Cronkite replied that he saw things differently. This, as was once noted, was "the most trusted name in news." Shows how far back the rot goes.

You know, no one would care if this crap didn't have real consequences. How many people today know that there was NO TIME that more than 20% of the country was against the Vietnam war? The vast majority wanted to win it and come home. How many today know that we left with a Peace Treaty and were not ignobly driven out of the country when it fell? That is the impress repeatedly given by showing the helicopters evacuating the US Embasy in Saigon.

Next time you hear some lefty spout about "the lessons of Vietnam" ask just what those lessons are. I bet, "don't abandon an ally" isn't one of them. I bet, "Don't micromange, let the Generals fight" isn't one either. How about, "fight to win" as the most important lesson. Unless that should be, "fight to win and ignore the whining on the left."

Thank you Dr. Sowell.
for another great and accurate column.

I listened to Dan Rather on the Sunday morning, Feb. 24 Chris Matthews show. Dan Rather said that the allegations about McCain must be true because the two NY Times newsmen are "serious journalists and above reproach". Talk about the pot calling the kettle etc.

As the newest bumper sticker says
"Defeat America -- Vote Democratic"

Just because I'm fired up now.
Why is it they called our soldiers, "Baby Killers" when they are the champions of unrestricted abortion? Does the left know what "hypocrite" means or do they just know they can use it when calling names?

Leftys have no shame and no honor. A pox on them.

God bless our Armed Forces and keep them safe.

Liberals are so Cute!
... with their "Do as I say, not as I do" types of criticisms!

It's OK when they dish out the dirt, but woe be to him who dares dish any back.

They're also cute with their "They do it too!" types of arguments.

So any time somebody mentions 5 or more examples of problems with liberals, such as bias at ABC, CBS, NBS, CNN, NYT, and nearly every other major news outlet, they'll scream "YAH BUT FOX IS BIASED TOO! THEY'RE CONSERVATIVE!!"

Yah, yah, right. You got caught with your hand in the cookie jar, and your only defense is you saw your little brother doing it.

Aren't liberals just so danged cute?? I just wanna HUG 'em and SQUEEZE 'em!!

Well, another part of the story is that there used to be papers on both sides, or all sides of the political spectrum. It was well know what "side" a paper was on. Somewhere along the lines the MSM started to pretend that this wasn't the case, that they were purveyors of "truth." Perhaps this coincided with the closure of so many newspapers, making most places a "one-paper town."

I have told students going off to college planning to take journalism "to make the world a better place" or at least "to make a difference" that I thought that they were going into the wrong line of work. I think Journalists should inform the public and let the public decide what, if anything, needs to be done.

Sir Michael - on "leftists"
Sire Michael wrote, "Leftys have no shame and no honor."
That's called "sophistry".
The Bible (sorry, atheists!) calls it "reprobate" (Ro 1:28).
Per Limbaugh's talking points, that means they are to be defeated, not "gotten along with", "reached out to", or "communicated with".
The first prerequisite of a meaningful dialogue is sincerety and intellectual honesty on the part of both parties to the conversation. Sophists don't meet that requirement. Worse yet, they don't see any need to even try to meet that requirement, because they truly believe nobody else is smart enough to see their deception-based, manipulation-based moral and intellectual deficiencies.
Recognize the likes of Billary and McCain (and AT) in that category?
The main problem with control-freak "leftist" sophists is that facts and reality are irrelevant, and they don't really discuss ideas; they actually BECOME their manipulations and deceptions, as manifested by their senseless, squirmy Grima Wormtongue rhetoric. ("By their fruits ye shall know them" - Mt 7:20.)
And, yes, "a pox on them" is fine by me!

Gideon
“AT is a manipulative control freak sophist. Any person who would refer to Dr. Sowell as "self-hating" (as in "Uncle Tom") is, by definition, a manipulative control-freak jerk not worthy of attempting to have a meaningful dialogue with”

Although I have referred to Sowell as a “self hating black” in the past for several valid reasons, I did not refer to him as a “self hating black” at any point today. I only address race when the column is about race. Surprisingly posters like you have interjected race on this thread, when I have not alluded to race in any of my post on this thread.

“I have watched his posts for some time, and never ceased to be amazed at how many otherwise intelligent and well meaning people try to interact with him in good faith.”

Clearly you aren’t one of them.

“I truly believe that to be an utter waste of time. His "blacker than thou" blather is blessedly shorter when nobody responds to it.”

Once again, I did not refer to race on this thread until you and Unca Alby did.

“it's that AT is a self-absorbed ad hominem jerk who should be required to debate Sowell face to face, mano a mano, because it would be instantaneously plain for all to see what an ignorant, disordered, intellectually dishonest, and manipulative jerk AT truly is”

Name one ad hominen attack that I have put forward today against Sowell. I present facts to support my opinion and opposition of Sowell and it is YOU who has engaged in an “ad hominem” attack against me WITHOUT any facts.

Sowell on the "Bad Times"
Knowingly, Sowell writes not a word on the main thrust of The Times" story, McCain's coziness with powerful lobbyists despite sanctimony to the contrary, subject matter voters are entitled to consider about a candidate who could be their next president. Unfortunately, failed editing at The Times opened the door to inveterate critics of the paper such as Sowell, allowing them to focus exclusively on the attention-grabbing sex angle in the first few paragraphs while wholly disregarding the otherwise lengthy substantive story. Properly, other media sources are now following through on the main questions The Times' story raised. As a good journalist, perhaps Sowell should follow their lead.

cougar
At the risk of troll-feeding, Sowell is not a Journalist. He is a Columnist. He is writing Opinion and giving you some of the information he has that supports that Opinion. This is the type of material that belongs on the Editorial Page, not the Front Page. The Front Page is for Facts - who, what, when, where, how, and why - the "6 Honest Serving Men" they were once called. No one is complaining about Editorial Content on the Editorial Page. They are complaining about Editorial Content on the Front Page and the lack of reporting of certain facts and stories that conflict with the Editorial Page policy.

You’re absolutely and unequivocally wrong on this matter, it was the conservative “INSIGHT” magazine that originally printed the fraudulent story and attempted to connect it to Clinton. Fox picked it up from them and had to apologize for using inaccurate information. The following is the actual article from INSIGHT MAGAZINE and the story about John Moody having to reprimand his employees for hack journalism in the Washington Post.

The Times piece was all about the sexual innuendo and you know it. That is how it was written and that was how it was presented. That was their main thrust because the "coziness" between McCain and that lobbyist that you lefties are jumping up and down about has proven to have been a non-story. Neither the lobbyist nor the Senator behaved improperly under Senate rules and her organization did not get what they were working for. The whole story was a non-story.

Now, if you want to look at what may have been an improper coziness and certainly was a sexual relationship between a senator and a lobbyist in 1998, why don't you look up the occupation of the wife of the Senate Minority Leader at the time (Daschle).

Ssgt-LJ7392
What is different? Hal has been on the skids since Shrillary started nosediving. If I was Hal Doofus, I would be looking over my shoulder. Shrillary was said to be inVINCEible and she might FOSTER some ill feelings towards her staff when she loses.

Anthony:
You must be pretty desperate to make a case. You’re comparing one very minor mistake by Fox to the long history of fraud and propaganda that passes for news at the NYT and other left-leaning rags.

Studies show that some 80+% of journalists describe themselves as democrat and/or liberal. The tone and reporting of most media certainly bears this out. The only way to have any semblance of balance whatsoever is for some news outlets to be conservative. The libs are afraid of Fox for good reason: the best way to fight the Left is with the truth.

Mr. Thomas: FNC bias?
Bill O (pro-PC pragmatist pundit) and Sean H (overt conservative pundit) are commentators who overtly cite their own personal biases unlike their left-wing MSM counterparts, e.g., the very petulant Keith Olbermann (e.g., he called the Bush administration a "criminal conspiracy." He says, "The presidency has devolved into a criminal conspiracy only to cover the as* of George W. Bush.")

In particular, Bill O’Reilly practices his “Investigative Journalism” in a politically-correct, pragmatic fashion. His “No Spin Zone” is a joke because he refuses to address the activities of various members of government-sanctioned victim groups. He supports “hate crime legislation” that benefits hyphenated-Americans while ignoring the fact that black on white violent crime comprises 90% of inter-racial violence. O’Reilly Waxes poetic about “child predators” yet ignores the fact that biological mothers commit over 60% of all child abuse/murders (any connection w/ abortion on demand and the callous behavior of a number of women WRT their children?) He refuses to address the “Paternity Fraud” epidemic. He refuses to address legal double standards WRT punishing the misbehavior of women-children: CAPT Nowak, Mary Winkler, Andrea Yates, Debra LaFave, etc.

On the other hand, Greta V. is an overt female chauvinist who only focuses on “female as victims” stories. And then there’s the matter of FNC’s stable of female-chauvinist trial lawyers who automatically convicted the DUKE3 in the court of public opinion. Where are their apologies? I would agree that FNC is chock full of anti-male w/ female chauvinists like Lis Wiehl who is consistently provided a venue for advocating the further expansion of female privilege.

But please do cite one biased FNC news story- I’m sure that George Soros-funded, left-wing media whore, Media Myrmidons, can you provide you with more than enough information.

So I am truly the...
only one who remembers that Kerry had an affair, and the MSM blackout regarding said affair? The hypocrisy is clear and the argument is over when you compare these two similar events and how differently they were treated by our "unbiased" MSM.

Here's another. Hillary was asked by a Buffalo radio host whether she had an affair with Vince Foster. Well, the world came down on his head, he was fired, and we were lectured that a politician's private life is off limits. Not a month later, Rudy G's affair was reported. Or perhaps you've decided that it's not a good idea to destroy your own credibility. "Today."

Either way -- just because you're black doesn't mean you can't be racist. If you quack like a racist, well, ...

Uncle Alby
Liberals love blacks as long as they stay "on the plantation". If they stray away from the liberal mantra, they are pariahs. Clarence Thomas, Condeleeza Rice,Thomas sowell,Shelby Steele, etc. They do not want independent thinkers. They are of no use to them if they are. They want to feel they are superior and all the while they are using them. A dispicable lot.

NY Times---The greatest newspaper
Five years ago, I had a person actually shout this into my face when I dared besmirch the grey lady. The man was obviously unstable. He was a former journalism student who knew more than I did. I asked him, with greater caution than I used when denigrating the paper, if he thought they had a bias. He said no. He said they had journalistic integrity. With all of the news stories that have come out since, I'm left to wonder if even the deranged still defend them.

The liberal Larry King once said that he had been in journalism for 135 years--a rough number I attribute to his age since I can't remember the exact quote. He said he had been in journalism for all these years, and he had yet to see one instance of bias in the media. All I can tell the liberal one is that he has agreed with the bias for all these years, so the old adage can't see the forest for the trees applies.

Rilaly
The problem with liberals like Larry King, for instance,do not believe they are liberal. They think they are straight down the middle, neither left or right. That is why you cannot win an argument with them. They think WE are far right. Conservatives do have a core belief and there are certain things that are not for sale or rent. There are things we cannot "progress" on,as we would have to change what we believe.Call us narrow-minded, I suppose.I,myself, cannot change my mind on abortion being murder, for example, marriage only between a man and woman, etc. Many small things we can change our minds on,but not our core beliefs.

The New Yoork Times Bias
The author, Dr. Sowell points out the obvious. The New York Times has had a bias for some time on its editorial pages, it appears that bias has moved to the "news" part and become the news.

When did this happen ? And more so, who is responsible for it ?

Not only do the national hoaxes the New York Times has been involved in destroy their credibility as a reputable news source, the greatest deriliction of all by the "Times" is their lack of reporting on events and issues of clear national importance. The costs of illegal immigration, the entitlement debt crisis, just to name a few.

The absence of balanced reporting by the "Times' in my opinion is also a powerful suggestion of bias.

New York Times???
Thomas always tells it like it is!! I just wish some of the others would do the same.
Thanks

Thomas for President
If only any of the present candidates would have half the common sense of Dr. Sowell.

I am sure he is too smart to put himself through the pain but that is too bad because his common sense and intelligence are greatly missing in Washington nowdays.

Run Thomas run.
