Liberals Turning Blind Eye to Human Rights

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?


On the last day of her trip to East Asia, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke briefly of the place of human rights in American policy toward China. "Our pressing on those issues" -- issues she didn't identify any more fully -- "can't interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crisis."

Cries of dismay quickly came forth from Amnesty International USA, New Students for a Free Tibet and Freedom House. Has the United States given up on championing human rights and democracy altogether?

Now it can be said in defense of Clinton's remarks that previous administrations of both parties, from the time of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, have given human rights at best a subordinate place in their dealings with China. And that our past calls for China to observe human rights have been met for the most part with stony silence and acts of defiance. And that the stricken American economy at this point is in need of continued Chinese purchases of Treasury bonds.

Still, for anyone with knowledge of American foreign policy over the last four decades, Clinton's remarks were jarring. It is one thing not to press a tyranny very hard on human rights; it is another thing to come out and say you're not going to raise the issue at all. It is a kind of unilateral moral disarmament. One arrow in the quiver of American foreign policy has been our pressing -- sometimes sotto voce (as in the Helsinki Accords), sometimes in opera buffa ("Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!") -- tyrannical regimes to honor human rights. Hillary Clinton has put that arrow over her knee, broken it in two and thrown it away.

She is not the only one. On this as on other matters, she is following the lead of the man who beat her for the Democratic nomination. In his inaugural speech, Barack Obama made only the most passing mention of human rights. In his Feb. 26 speech to Congress, he devoted just 7 percent of his words to foreign and defense policy, and made just one mention of freedom.

He is reportedly poised to name as head of the National Intelligence Council a man who has endorsed China's 1989 suppression of pro-democracy students at Tiananmen Square. He has noted with cold indifference the success of the provincial elections in Iraq.

All of which brings to mind the report of a conservative blogger who watched George W. Bush's 2005 inaugural speech with a group of liberals. Every time Bush called for spreading freedom and democracy around the world, the crowd guffawed and groaned and jeered. For them, evidently, Bush was a figure of fun, and his calls for democracy and human rights laughable. The same people who decried his supposed authoritarian rule at home had nothing but contempt for his call for freedom and democracy abroad.

Beneath this stated contempt is, I think, something in the nature of secret guilt. Or rather, anger at the notion that Bush had stolen the issues of human rights and democracy from the liberals.

The desire to oppose the Iraq war root and branch, to denounce every aspect of it, imposed a duty to dismiss as laughable Bush's stated objective -- set out eloquently before the decision to take military action as well as after it -- of advancing democracy in the Middle East. A duty to side with those, like the National Intelligence Council nominee, who have long held that governance in the style of Saudi Arabia or Syria is the best that can be hoped for in that region, and the best for all concerned. A duty to dismiss with contempt, or simply to ignore, the rather remarkable strides of the Iraqis themselves made after enduring decades of brutal tyranny.

It's quite a turnaround. It was liberals who complained that the United States sided with too many tyrannies in the Cold War and who (in the person of Henry Jackson) insisted on holding up Soviet trade deals to aid those persecuted by the Soviet Union. It was Jimmy Carter who made human rights a plank in his campaign and made it his policy as president, even when it undermined U.S. allies.

Not even when the cause of human rights was taken up by Ronald Reagan, in the Philippines as well as against the Soviets, did liberals declare that we should be indifferent to the cause of expanding democracy and freedom in the world. But now they seem to have done so in the desire to repudiate root and branch every policy espoused by George W. Bush.

Perhaps someone should suggest that a stony indifference to the freedom of others is not a very liberal -- not a very generous, not a very attractive -- thing.

The desire to spread democracy was and would have remained a part of our American ethos had McCain won. We lost the war of ideas in this last election, the ideas of life and liberty to be promoted and protected have been buried under the culture of death of which freedom is equated to self interest as the highest good. Civilized men used to call that barbarity.

May the American people repudiate this path in 2010.

Miguel D'Escoto, in derision of John Paul the II's, deriding of a recalcitrant priest in D'Escoto's Sandinista revolution said, "When has the Church ever been on the side of the campesino?" This while the Sandinista's were destroying the economy of the country.

In truth, power, any power has difficulty acknowledging the "the last, the lost, the least."

It doesn't matter if it's a fat cat socialist in Nicaragua
mocking the Church of Rome, or a policy maker in foggy halls of the new administration setting up justifications. The left, intellectual or tactical, cares little for the revolution of the spirit or protection of the small, for such a revolution is in derogation of the cadres and their militant mandate.

American liberals have turned their back on the purple thumbs that were so evident in the Iraqi national polling while weeping for the displaced in Sudan. While one tortured people were stepping into the sunlight, the American left could only rail for those that were inaccessible and 'off-piste.'

The rule of thumb for concern of foreign freedom by American leftists and Democrat partisans is, 'civil rights are best discussed as accusation, before any involvement or intervention.'

Appears the left would rather brandish sin then offer salvation.

Mike in Va., Did we really lose the battle of ideas? I don't think Issues and Ideas got the hearing they usually do. Obama was coddled by the media. His supporters avoided issues and ideas. Palin was mocked and lied about. Obama, "The One" was pampered.

When I debate liberals, my conservative ideas never lose. And liberals walk away fuming.

When Barac Obama was confronted by a blue collar worker, Joe, the plumber, Obama folded like a broken lawn chair.

In the arena of ideas, even a hill billy with a grasp of conservative policies and issues can defeat a room full of liberal intellectuals.

Notice that it takes only one moderate to fend off 3 or four liberals on Meet the Press and ABC's This Week. Imagine the carnage if Newt or Rush were allowed equal time, one on one with Obama, Kerry, Durbin, .. pick your favorite liberal.

Pretty Sarah Palin would have destroyed Barac Obama in an unmoderated debate.

You never really believed, I hope, after watching her in the White House in her role as First Unlady for eight years, that she had even an ounce of decency or regard for anything but herself, did you? We can't realistically expect Secretary Clinton to offend the Chinese. They've not only bought truckloads of our treasury bonds. On her husband's watch, they also bought our military and industrial secrets and other choice assets. Part of the price was funding for at least one of Bill's presidential campaigns. For all I know, one Clinton or the other is still on the Chinese payroll. Maybe the People's Liberation Army is sponsoring a wing of Bill's library.

No one as Machiavellian as Hillary is likely to be acting on gratitude, though. The most probable reason she's making nice with China is that it has enough dirt her and her circle to get them all hanged.

In any case, liberals have always turned a blind eye to human rights in left-wing dictatorships, in most of the Third World, indeed anywhere the ruling clique shares their anti-Western bias. They loved Chairman Mao and Uncle Joe Stalin (even after he partnered up with Hitler). They yawned at the boat people and the killing fields. A half-century of poverty, oppression, desperate escapes, mercenary adventures, and support for terrorism hasn't diminished their infatuation with Castro and his workers' paradise. They deem Chavez and Ahmedinejad harmless, and they think Kim Jong-Il is comical. Abnormal psychology isn't my strong suit, so I must let specialists determine whether these people are monsters or just idiots.

Look I did not like this either. But lets not for a momemnt remember that the President who made human rights the centerpiece of his foreign policy was Jimmy Carter who was universally reviled by the far right. His foreign policy was seen as unpragmatic.

Baron is correct that since Nixon's time the west has made a pact with the devil, placing the capitalism over democracy when it came to the Chinese. So now the chinese are fastly becoming the second largest capitalist economy in the whold but they are still not free and repress minority groups. Which is to say they have become a facist nation.

And our borrowing from china is troubling, but then it was troubling when GWB was doing it to fund two wars and at the same time provide a massive tax cut and Republicans save a very few were silent.

But now that conservatives have become born-again deficit hawks, it is interesting to watch the total turn around in concern. I hope that one day we can get out of debt to china and that one day the people of china will overthrow their dictators.

Either you must be debating morons or your friends are walking away exasperated by your rigity. I have debated conservatives and few can hold their own. They are full of simple ideas and Fox News talking points. But once we wade deeply into issues like Universal Healthcare or tax policy or the needs for society to have social safety nets, they just can't keep up.

The only issue where frankly we cannot come to agreement and they make a compelling case is on the matter of abortion.

But one everything else, its talking points and conservative victimization. One thing conservatives seem to be really go at is being angry and sarcastic and they seem to have selective memory on the facts especially as it relates to the record of conservative leaders like Ronald Reagan or GWB.

Do you notice that Rush does not do talking heads. That is because the few times he did do it he made a fool of himself. Newt on the otherhand is quite good at holding his own. But he prefers to be on programs like Hannity so where it is more of a mutual admiration society.

As to Sara Palin, she could barely debate Joe Biden and that was with a lot of prepping. She could not even handle a soft ball interview with Katie Kouric let alone a real debate.

I see Russia from my window. Palin has a lot of charm and a great ability to deliver zingers from a teleprompter, but wading into a serious policy debate- you gotta be kidding.

Maybe someday she will be ready but not now.

I knew that this is Dean Smith's birthday, but I'd forgotten that it's also the anniversary of the beginning of the Waco debacle. Thanks for the reminder.

Even back then, I wondered aloud why BATF would ignore street gangs and Chinese operatives _dealing_ arms in large cities to concentrate on a few religious nuts _collecting_ arms out in deepest flyover country. It was also puzzling why BATF agents went right up to a fortified compound to serve warrants when they probably could've nabbed the same people with far less bloodshed _en route_ to the grocery store.

It was pretty clear that the Clinton administration was trying to send a message of some kind. It certainly sent one, whatever its intention.

Your statement about Carter below proves my point. The left’s approach to Foreign policy is to try and reason with Dictators and Sadists. Carter was a Boy Scout in a world where weakness will get you nowhere. Speaking truthfully after four years of Carter he was reviled by more than just the far right. Clinton was no different resulting in both of their presidencies having little success in Foreign Policy.

Is it your inflexibility that you conclude superioriority in exchanges with conservatives on this site? Alternatively, is it some little voice in your head telling you how advanced you are?

Universal healthcare, 1) Is it Constitutional? 2)Are people entitled to Universal Healthcare, or phrased another way, on what moral foundation do you make this claim? 3)A biggie here, define Universal Healthcare, as in what get's provided for. 4) What standards are used/imposed on those who are to be benificiaries of Universal Healthcare? For example am I expected to give of my resources to help provide for someone like octomom who in using her free will chose to have 14 kids, or anyone really who has of their own free will made decisions in their life putting oneself in a financially untenable position? 5) How do you ensure that those providing the services receive the proper remuneration ( after all, it is a product just like any other, in that individuals are offering of their resources, skills and time something to others, which is theirs in the first place to give of as they see fit)? Debate over, but please feel free to respond.

I have little in common with those people and I couldn't care less about the Falun Gong or Tibet. It isn't any of our business. Not only this, but I've always thought that Bush's pushing this stuff was self serving. It is not the duty of America to force "democracy" or "human rights" on others, but to set an example instead.

This crap below is home grown and a real threat to liberty, as it is an attack on the first amendment. Complaining about China distracts folks from bad things taking place right under our noses.

Liberal Human Rights
Liberals are chronically the worst offenders of human rights on the planet. You name them , they are 90% leftist . Mao , Stalin , Hitler ( yes Matilda,a SOCIALIST who hated capitalism ) , Pol Pot, even the self-styled Stalinist Sadaam Hussein and the list rolls on ad infinitum. This is all necessary because for the left to implement its world view it must have total control . Eveyone must be on the same page for it to " work" . Since , in their minds , they are mentally superior and know "best" they cannot be challenged. Dissenters therefore can be done away with in the larger interests of the "people" , as expressed by the liberal elite. Individual freedom is the greatest threat to the leftist worldview and therefore its greatest enemy. Don't be surprised that the so-called "moderate" Hillary Clinton reveals her true colors serving an administration who views itself as possessing a mandate for "social change" from the American voter. They talk about freedom and caring for the poor but honestly they love when babies are aborted so they don't have to worry about overpopulation and Malthusian's trap ........They think caring about the poor means giving them other peoples money.........etc.,etc., etc.

debating a religious zealot. Common sense holds no sway with these people, and facts are merely nuisances that are poo-pooed away. As for Nationallized Health Care, the facts show it doesn't work in every country it's been tried.
They want to put our health care in the hands of politicians! Good Lord, what's the matter with these people? I have a question for you liberal noodle heads...what happens if the bureacracy decides that you are too old for expensive medical procedures, or if they decide that your life-style would not be conducive to extended medical care, or any of the other plethora of rules and strings that are sure to be implemented. What happens at the end of the fiscal year when the federal and state moneies are short or non-existent? Why is an MRI in Canada practically non-existent, and why do people with cancer have to wait for 6 months to get a scan? The only thing the government is good at is operating a military and that's only because they can't talk back. Liberals love that concept, even though the loathe the military itself. If they can rule where nobody can easily question them, they will thrive.

How can we expect Obama to champion "human rights" when it is his policy goal to erode individual liberty domestically? Obama has openly said that we should be more like China. Any person that does not yet understand what Obama is trying to do will learn the hard way. By then it may be too late.

As for HRC's visit to China, it is a sad commentary on Reep governance that she has limited wiggle room to press the human rights issue with the Chinese authorities. Unfortunately for our country, decades of ascendant "conservative" radicalism has reduced our country economically, strategically, and morally. We have to pick our battles. After eight years of that little boy in the WH, there's a big mess to clean up--and hardly any resources to do it with.

For those surprised at Hillary
Please remember that Hillary is also a disciple of Saul Alinsky and his Rules for Radicals, just like Obama. They are sympatico in ideology, the primary was just a contest over power, not ideas. Hillary went to work right out of law school for a law firm that was aligned with Alinsky. You just don't hear about it much. So, please do not be surprised at how craven Hillary has become. Besides, these days she and Bubba are all about the money and power, not principles.

That's an oxymoron if ever I've seen one. I have to agree with Patriotic Liberal that over-spending is what got us into this mess we're now enjoying. But to rag on Bush for doing something that "The One" is doing on steroids seems hypocritical to say the least...especially when you praise "The Messiah" for doing it.

Looks to me that Barry here is the one wearing the lipstick.

Liberals are no more patriots than Casto or Chavez since they adore these two morons and wish fervently for America follow their examples. In your mind, you might think you're a patriot, but I know some delusional folks who think they are Napolean too.

Nothing "runs on its own." El Rushbo's radical and childish faith that the markets take care of themselves is precisely the thing that has led to the slide of American civilization. Too many people have bought that argument, and as a result, you have widespread moral erosion and economic collapse. There must be a top-down civic vision. Without it, the bottom-up of free-enterprise and democracy simply fails--as it has done in our country, under the leadership of guys like Rush. Civilization has to be proactively defended--not just with weapons, but by behavior. And that does not just "take care of itself." No wonder we have descended into Barbarism. Okay, you have. If you think modern liberals care about freedom, you must have been living on another planet for the last fifty years. I have a simple explanation for the perceived hypocrisy. It is not hypocritical at all. They don't like freedom and never have but, they are willing to use anything in pursuit of their goal of slavery for everyone, even freedom.

The cries for freedom for abortion, freedom for gay marriage, freedom for this, that, and the other are merely tools to foment conflict and help push the United States ultimately to abandon freedom altogether which is the actual goal. They support freedom anytime they think it might help their goal. They have never supported it for freedom's sake alone.

You have to remember Michael, liberals are not liberal. They are closet socialists today. True modern liberals are called libertarians. The term liberal has been hijacked and made Orwellian.

Fifty years ago, liberals represented the opposition to socialism and totalitarian rule. The term hasn't changed spelling but it has changed meaning. The people that wrap themselves in the term today are anything but liberal. Most of us know this. Therefore, it surprises no one that the modern liberal will side with China against Tibet or side with Islamic rule over the people of the middle east. They don't particularly like Islam but, accept it since it provides autocratic rule over an alleged inferior people. They look down on conservatives and libertarians as inferior also since we do not accept the call for autocratic rule.

Terms change meaning over time. People do not change. They either side with freedom or the prevention of it. Which side you choose is readily apparent to readers. Using opposite meaning terms to camouflage true intent is the oldest trick in the book.

Chinese Food.
Millions are starving and being murdered in Africa while American eyes and ears are turned elsewhere. They are turned toward China and its underpaid work force. Americans are out of work partially because of cheap Chinese labor and want Chinese leaders to be boiled in oil. But China is our friend. Our multitrillion dollar stimulus package is financed by the Chinese treasury. Keeping China rich is in the interest of the American people. Let’s not bite the hand that feeds us.

Liberal guilt
The main reason why today's liberals no longer want America to advocate for human rights in other countries, is that today's liberals, particularly the young, have been indoctrinated by their professors to believe that America is basically evil--imperialist, racist, colonialist, etc. And therefore, America has no right to be lecturing the rest of the world about morality.

The seeds that were planted long ago by the New Left in the 1960s have now flourished. Those New Left radicals got a little older and become college professors. There they indoctrinate America's youth into believing that they live in a basically evil country.

I've seen the results of this on other Internet forums. When someone from another country makes a wild, baseless denunciation of American society or the American people, almost no Americans rise to challenge it. Because they've been indoctrinated to believe the same things.

China, who we've been buying cheap products from for years is very cranky that we've stopped buying. We raised their standard of living and have now dramatically lowered it. They will not buy our treasury bonds if we're not buying their cheap products. Chinese leaders can't find anything for their people to do. China and the rest of the world
Back in 1996/7 the WTO was in the process of admitting China and the USA was in the process of deciding whether to give China favoured nation trading status. At the time a friend of mine said, "If the USA does not require China to improve its human rights record in this [trade] process, within 50 years the way China treats its citizens will become the norm internationally."

His words always chill my bones. Watching Robert Mugabage get a standing ovasion at the non-aligned movement a few years ago suggests we didn't even have to wait 50 years. Watching Libya chair the UN Human Rights Commision suggests we didn't even have to wait 50 years.

Why aren't Conservatives
pushing the human rights issue? They should be alerting the US citizenry to the issues and in Congress should be blocking any and all foreign aid to countries who are violating human rights.

involved in connection with championing human rights. Its tough enough standing up for your own. What did we get for Clinton's intervention in the Balkans, except an on-going expense and military drain. Our cruise into Irawq can possibly be defended on national self interest, but not on the basis of human rights. We best restrain ourselves to loud and inexpensive statements and avoid doing anything rash. Of course, Hilary has abandoned even this sort of high ground and said we need China's cash, so we won't mention their HR peccadillos.

Erosion of civil liberties
Now you have your version of a charismatic socialist Tony Blair in the person of B Hussein Obama you can expect to suffer the same left wing assault on freedom and liberty at home and abroad as we in the UK have suffered for the last eleven years of socialist misrule.

Expect Michelle Obama to follow Cherie Blair's lead and express her understanding and support for Palestinian Muslim terrorists.

Expect BHO to attempt to introduce identity cards and a national identity register in the name of fighting terror. Expect him to want to allow all government agencies to pool all the information they have about you to better persecute the innocent.

Expect BHO to resile from supporting democracy and freedom across the globe. Expect him to send money to Muslim terrorist groups such as Hamas and Fatah. Expect him to let the forces of socialism and islamosocialism to rise unchecked from Venezuela to Pakistan while he wastes weasel words but does nothing. Expect him to be blase at Iran goes nuclear and be craven in the face of attacks on the civilised world.

As for the "narcissist" argument, the preening radicalism of Boomer "conservatives," and those post-boomers influenced by them, has been the hallmark narcissism of our age. "Leaders" like GW and el Rushbo and Sean achieve their success through pandering to our conceits--our ignorant belief that we comprise the alpha and omega of human experience. And ignorance, my friends, loves to dress itself as "morality."

Public policy is coming from the center-left these days. The right is still finding itself, after its abject failure of governance. Lot of silly talk coming from over there. Conservatism will always have a place in the national dialog. There is a place for those who recognize the fragility of civilization, the ubiquitous sin of man, the limits to what we can achieve. But conservatism today has become the blowhard nonsense of the radical--and America has no use for that kind of self-indulgence any more.

There's No Such Thing As a Patriotic Lib
But aside from that. Liberals have never really been for human rights. They have pet projects like Tibet which is not as bad as some global hot spots like Cuba. They have been imprisoned for over half a century. And yet liberals ignore this place and champion Castro and Che. They wear Free Tibet and Ernesto "Che" Guevara the murdurous communist T- shirts days apart, they hang in the same closet. They have some brain wires crossed somewhere. They wouldn't know a human rights violation if it kicked them in the face. Unless stumbling upon it by accident of course. They run down from Hollywood to shake the hand and kiss the feet of new tyrant Hugo Chavez,all while he is systematically devouring the human rights of the Venezualan people.

You're ridiculous. No wonder "conservatism" is hurting. You live in a cartoon world, where Sean Penn matters and a T-shirt amounts to an argument.

While Bush was hobnobbing with the Taliban, trying to work out some oil pipeline, liberals were appalled at their treatment of women and of other religious faiths. And while no one likes Chinese repression, the sad fact is that we have limited room to do anything about it. If you have a problem with that, look in the mirror, chump. You Reeps ran our country into the ground, leaving us severely weakened on all fronts--economic, strategic, and moral.

Bush was hobnobbing with the Taliban? You are ridiculus. President Bush liberated Afganistan and Iraq from tyrannical fanatic rule such as the taliban and Saddam Hussein. As usual you liberals cannot distinguish between the real world and as you say the cartoon world. i.e. The real world... human rights and terrorist activities abound in Afganistan and Iraq. George Bush and American patriots(none of them liberals) liberate those places.

Cartoon liberal world...liberals bash a sitting President and American patriots fighting to save those oppressed in other countries. They write fake stories in the treason times and give away national security secrets all in the name of liberal/fascism.

Real world- hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi's are murdered and buried in mass graves by Saddam and they are saved by the U.S., the Global War On Terror having nothing to do with oil.

Cartoon liberal world. Bush is going to war for oil.... liberals stick finger in nose and repeat...they never realize that we are there to help stabilize a entire region and stop the terrorism. They don't even recognize that terrorism exists or acknowledge the term. Daffy ducks they are.

Those T-shirts are an argument because it shows the ignorance and hypocrisy of the left. They think Che is great, a murderous tyrant who excercized human rights violations on a daily basis and then the Free Tibet mantra as if they really care about human rights violations. Duh. They can't distinguish between a terrorist and a tibetan monk. It's just a pet peeve project because they think they identify with monks. That's why they hang those Tibetan prayer flags around their liberal abodes. They could care less about human rights in their entirety. World Wide.

Before 9/11
Bush was engaged with the Taliban, trying to workout an oil pipeline arrangement. After 9/11, he had to recognize the exigent threat, but before 9/11, he thought we could work with the Taliban. And the libs recognized the regime for the monstrosity it is.

Your morality always chases the economics. Can the Reep bosses make a buck from the tyranny? Does a little American torture improve the partisan calculus ("we're tough on terrorists!!")? Go for it, then. There is nothing to learn from you clowns when it comes to moral principle. Morally, you have brought disgrace to our nation. And now, we libs are cleaning up your mess. Repugs complaining about liberals abandoning the human rights of others, is like a barking dog complaining about noise. Especially given the fact so many of you supported the torture of 9/11 suspects and the denial of rights as given in the Constitution and the various treaties the US has signed in the past. How laughable you have turned out to be! Who says conservatives don't have a sense of humor?
