Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Does it have subtitles?" I asked.

My friend Nina wanted to see a Bollywood film with the weird title of "Slumdog Millionaire." I preferred to see the new James Bond film because, really, I just wanted -- during the Thanksgiving holiday -- to put my brain on cruise control for an hour or two and watch good ol' reliable 007 blast bad guys.

"Sort of," she said.

"Oh."

"But I've heard amazing things about this film," she insisted. So off we went.

Movie reviews that reveal too much always bother me. So here's an outline -- and I mean outline, because for a brief 120 minutes, "Slumdog Millionaire" surprises, astounds, amazes, entrances and intrigues. It is, at its bottom, a love story.

A dirt-poor orphan boy, Jamal, ends up on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." How he got there, why he got there, how an uneducated young man managed to answer questions -- well, that's the journey.

This is also a story about the path taken by two brothers. It is about cruelty and exploitation and the abject, completely dehumanizing poverty in India, a destitution that even the poorest among us would find unimaginable.

And how ironic that much of the film takes place in Mumbai, India. For on the day we watched the film, Indian authorities almost 9,000 miles away fought with Islamic terrorists who launched multiple attacks, ultimately leaving more than 170 dead and hundreds more wounded.

The viewer of this film is stunned -- time and time again -- at the poverty that makes the poorest rundown shack in Appalachia look like the honeymoon suite at the Bellagio.

In America, we consider a family of four "poor" if its annual income falls below $21,203. And we actually undercount income -- ignoring assets accumulated in prior years and disregarding non-cash welfare, such as taxpayer-funded education, lunch programs, health care, food stamps and subsidies for public housing. Only 6 percent of poor households, according to The Heritage Foundation, are overcrowded -- meaning more than one person per room. More than two-thirds of "poor" Americans live in housing with more than two rooms per person. And 43 percent of America's poor households own their own homes -- and the average poor person's home has three bedrooms, one-and-a-half bathrooms, a garage and a porch or a patio.

"Overall," writes Heritage, "the typical American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR or DVD player, and a stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair and is not overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry and he had sufficient funds in the past year to meet his family's essential needs. While this individual's life is not opulent, it is equally far from the popular images of dire poverty conveyed by the press, liberal activists, and politicians."

"Nearly three-quarters of poor U.S. households own a car," says the study, "31 percent own two or more cars. Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions. Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception. Eighty-nine percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and more than a third have an automatic dishwasher."

In 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population -- rich and poor -- lived with air conditioning, while today 80 percent of poor households have air conditioning. The average poor American has more living space than the average citizen -- of all income levels -- living in many cities throughout Europe, including Paris, London, Vienna and Athens.

Right now, our economy is in a recession of unknown duration, with rising unemployment and vast economic anxiety. But we live here, in America -- a country of vast prosperity, freedom of choice, and a control over our own destinies that much of the world simply finds breathtaking. And this film reminds us that things could be worse -- much, much worse.

There are good movies. And then there are movies where everything works -- the story, the acting, the experience. These are the films where -- when they end -- the audience just sits there. Stunned. Numb. We watch while the credits roll, as the soundtrack plays. We sit, take in, reflect upon, and try to get our heads around what happened during the last two hours.

When Nina and I walked out of the theater, we started talking with another couple. "I grew up poor," the woman said, "or I thought I did. But then my brother, who had been stationed in Bosnia, came home. He said, 'I've seen real poverty, and I'll never complain again.'" And neither will anyone else who sees this film -- not for a long, long while. Yet above all, "Slumdog" is a story about what kept Jamal going, what drove him to try to survive and cope.

It is called love.

Larry, please!
You may trigger gratitude in a liberal reading your article!

Such an alien and contradictory character trait might cause a meltdown in what passes for their brain. Oh where is your compassion, Larry?! ;-D

While traveling in Europe, I've been proposed to on more than a few occasions by women who openly told me that they wanted to come and live in the U.S. Those women living in Eastern Europe were almost desperate to get out.

These were not "poor" women, and they were open in their offers to pay me for the, uh, gesture.

And, no, I didn't get married. Sure was fun getting offered, however.

It really is that bad; we have it good
I've traveled to India twice. And yes, it is as poor as you say. It's also very filthy.

It's so crazy to hear about the "dire" economic times when most people around the world would love to have our "problems."

Another reminder of what's really going on in the world was the recent 2 hour 24: Redemption. That gave a very real portrayal of what's going on in Africa.

Poor
Visit South Korea and go out to the rural areas.

Similar to what Larry described, but the Koreans have the opportunity to rise above the poverty.

What I have witnessed in Korea since the 70's is truly astounding.

There are still extremely poor people in Korea, though.

America's spiritual poverty
The real "Poverty" in the U.S. is Spiritual Poverty. People who much, much more material abundance than 98% of the rest of the world and yet they feel empty, selfish, angry, victimized and at worst, violent, immoral and even evil.
These attitudes are for the most part created by the Liberals, Neo Marxists, that control the media, education and Hollywood.
They have been working hard for decades to indoctrinate Americans into turning against eachother through class envy and matarial jealousy. Mother Theresa once said of the West:
"What if a people have everything...but they don't have love...what can you do for them?"

THANKS LARRY FOR THE REMINDER
In the 1990's I was a US Peace Corps Volunteer and as all volunteers do I lived in the general population on the median income of the country we serve. For two years I lived on $300.00 per month, had no television, no telephone, no washer and dryer, no car, no supermarkets. In this third world county I met wonderful people who enjoyed life to the fullest and placed a high value on their family relationships. It is true many of them would have loved to live in our country for the opportunities they knew were available to us.
When I returned home it was a difficult adjustment for me for almost a year to listen to Americans complain about their way of life and really look at our consumer mentality. My first visit to a large supermarket was overwhelming because of the great selection of products that are available to us everyday.
For two years I had lived another life and enjoyed it and came to appreciate more the American life that too many of us take for granted. I will never complain about my country, nor be very tolerate with those who do complain a lot.

I had the blessing of ...
travelling to Haiti with my then 14-year-old daughter. The government corruption in Haiti is second only to India. I do not profess to know other areas of the world, but I cannot imagine it being much worse than in Port de Paix or St Louis du Nord, Haiti. Weather-wise, it is a tropical paradise, but the living conditions are abhorent, again, because of the government corruption.

I know that the freedoms we have in the United States precludes compulsory service. Still, I can't help but believe we would be better off if our young adults had to work in such environments for just one or two weeks.

I had a lifetime of growing up as one of 13 children so I'm well aware of what it's like to go without.

Greedy america
I've thought about this before. How the "poor" in america live exponentially better than the average person in most other countries.

IMO this is due primarily to political parties looking for votes. It's a powerful tool: vote for me and I'll "give you" X, Y, and Z.

And the other powerful tool is Class Warfare. Intentionally breeding resentment and envy and leading people at the bottom to believe they've been robbed...and that they're owed something. Traditionally, this approach hasn't worked very well, because although we do get envious, the mentality has always been to work hard and get rich yourself...instead of using govt to take away another's wealth.

But, as modern communications and affordable travel makes our people more "worldly", the european model seems to becoming more attractive to many voters. IMO the under 30 crowd would vote for european socialism by a wide margin.

Much jabbering from the Left these days about "greed". The term is almost as popular as "diversity". What I've never been able to understand is why using govt to forcibly take another's wealth and give it to yourself isn't considered the utlimate form of "greed".

Cure worst than the Disease
I recently got into a "debate" about helping the poor.
The people I was debating with thought it was heartless because I was against the massive government hand-outs given to the poor in America.
I grew up quite poor. I remember the black community just prior to JBJ's Great Society experiment. Black Families were on average two parent and married. Before a black could easily escape to the "white" neighborhoods, the black neighborhoods were not as bad as today. Now as soon as a man can afford to he leaves the "hood" and goes to the suburbs. I don't blame him and have done the same, but this has stripped the black communities of most of the positive role models.
This also put many black businesses out of business.

The other major problem has been with the government welfare. With government welfare it has made it possible for a black women to be better off with out a husband. At least in the short run.
Statistically single parent children do worst in every single category. Thus continuing the spiral downward for blacks.

All to often attempts to "help" backfire and cause more harm than good.
I'll give one more example of this.
In the 1970's a massive earthquake struck Columbia. America rushed in with massive amounts of food and aid. So much free food flooded the market that farmer could not sell their food. It's hard to sell something that is also being given away for free. Farmers lost their land due to not being able to make payments.
The drug cartel then moved in and bought much of the land lost to the farmers. The cartels then hired the out of work farmers to raise crops for drugs.
Thus the problem we have today in Columbia.

Sounds like a worthwhile flick....
A good reminder of why the immagration pattern in the Americas is mostly North. From cardboard shacks in Mexico City to section 8 housing in Arizona. Kinda puts things into perspective.

I will go and see this movie.

Poverty in America
I recently took my wife on a business trip to India. Even though I tried to prepare her for the experience she was shocked at the poverty. What stunned her most is how widespread the poverty is and how desperate the people are. In Mumbai, New Delhi or Bangalore you cannot walk a single block in any direction from very nice hotels without witnessing some of the most desperate/deplorable conditions imaginable. The shock really comes when a Lamborghini drives past people living in these horrible conditions.

We in America can watch the film as Mr. Elder suggests, but it is still not possible to gain an understanding of the wretched conditions a large part of the Indian population endure. In all my travels in the US, I have never seen anything even close. The Democrats play on our emotions with their mantra of poverty in the US; the poorest in America are wealthy beyond what India’s poor can ever hope for or even imagination.

smg45acp
Good points. I didn't know that about Columbia.

Economics is a rather fragile thing. This (situation of poverty in other countries) could easily happen here. When government destroys business (the primary creators of wealth) crushing poverty is not far behind.

Overseas competition is not nearly as detrimental to business as government taxation and burdensome regulations. Ask any business owners and they will tell you, they would rather deal with foreign competition than government interference.

When our nation first began, there was no nanny state, no government rushing in to rescue everyone from themselves. There was only freedom, and look where it got us.

When people are free to follow their dreams, it can take them just about anywhere.

JohnR22
"What I've never been able to understand is why using govt to forcibly take another's wealth and give it to yourself isn't considered the ultimate form of "greed". "

It most definitely is.

I just wrote several posts about this very thing under Joel Mowbray's article. This is a moral's problem. When morals begin to deteriorate, people don't mind theft of other's wealth for themselves, and they more easily fall to the sin of envy.

For all the talk of greed on the Left, they forget that envy is also a sin. When God said " don't covet" He wasn't kidding. Envy is rot of the soul and can make one (or a country) vulnerable to all sorts of bad things.

Inverted priorities
Both my sons delivered pizzas while in school, and they both told me the most expensive satellite TV packages they saw were in the poor areas of town -- areas still rich enough to order out pizza to boot. And they probably didn't have health insurance.

Real poverty?
I've seen real poverty; years ago I was stationed in both India and Pakistan. One morning - at first light- looking down from my balcony I saw a stake bed truck drive by, full of bodies stacked like cordwood. It was like something out of Dachau. I asked one of the staff who were up at the desk what was going on. He was very uncomfortable, but under prodding told me: These were the bodies of those poor who had died that night in the streets; most died of starvation or disease caused by it. They were picked up every day in our area so the tourists would not see them. That is poverty.

In America - Poverty Is Political
In this movie, you don't get the smells. When you land in Mumbai, for the first time of your life, on a hot summer day, the smell that greets you, like open sewage, has made more than a few head to a ticket counter to go back home.

Once you get used to the smell, things aren't all that bad -- the people, alone, are worth the journey.

In America, poverty is all about playing class warfare and getting votes.

Poor me.
By all methods of counting $X in the US, I am poor. However, I have all of the things I need. Sure there are some medical bills in collection and Christmas will be lacking in the materialistic areas. But I consider myself blessed for the material things I do have: good food, good shelter, a good working vehicle (so far). I don't feel entitled or owed. I am happy for other people's success. I have been homeless before and I've worked hard to get what I have today.
So, why do some of my fellow "poor" americans feel so poor. I think part of it has to do with the sheltered nature of their information. As commented earlier in this thread, if they only could see how well they have it compared to the rest of the world. The sheltered information a majority of people in the US see is TV of course. If you are a "poor" person watching TV, you know that it potrays a view of a world where there is a lot of stuff that you can't have. Maybe the non-stop hammering of commercials and dumb TV drammas is'nt such a good thing.

Attitude also counts.
After all, is the glass half empty?

Some great posts, here,....
..to compliment Larry's great article.

I was raised "blue collar", and like ALL of us kids back then, we didn't know that we were on a basically subsistence level of living. Yep, we were "poor". We just didn't know it.

We ate good, and as kids, there were firm expectations of us in regard to respecting our elders, doing mandatory chores around the house, and pushing ourselves in school.

All of our fun was up to us, and we had a blast. Where I was from, a small town in northern Michigan, we fished, hunted, had our tree forts way back in the woods, and sold worms to tourists who came up to fish.

When I first traveled abroad as a young man in the military, I knew right then that I came from wealth. What I first saw was a shock, and it stuck with me ever since.

Thank God I was born in America.

Americans Work Hard Not To Be Poor!
The difference between Third World countries and America is that we're a democratic country who offers free enterprise and protects employees and employers striving for fairness because we are free, but we're free because men and women have shed their blood to protect the freedom that is being diminished. In Third World countries, the government keeps all of the money for themselves and surrounds themselves with armies that rape, murder, torture, and burn down villages and kill Christians and ration food or don't give their people any food or medications. They don't invest in their people and that's the difference in America. The people are the government and they demand Checks and Balances and they are the reason that people who are considered "poor" have food on their tables and can go to a clinic for help. We mustn't forget who we are and how we have always had to fight back so that we don't live in a dictatorship and in a hut, although there are now "tent" cities and people living in "cardboard boxes" and under bridges in America, too! In fact, there are 250,000 people out of work and the number is increasing, daily while our government allowed a great fraud on a great country and now says they're going to do us a favor by bailing out the rich with our money! Every government has its issues if allowed to run away with the gold!

Home sizes
When I was growing up in the 1950s, the average size of a new home in the U.S. was about a thousand square feet. In those days we didn't expect to have more than one bathroom or a bedroom for every kid -- we slept in bunkbeds and did our homework at the kitchen table.

When I was raising my own kids in the 1970s, the average new home size was about 1,500 square feet. Today it's about 2,400 square feet. (No wonder we had a housing "bubble," with lots of people in homes they couldn't afford.) Considering that those homes are all air-conditioned today, the energy bills alone are daunting.

Because our lifestyles demand everything be bigger and better, every houshold needs two incomes. The two incomes -- not to mention the resulting need for teens to be more independent -- makes it necessary to have about three cars per household. Where does this end?

You guys have no idea what poverty is!!
Dear Larry,

As a citizen of India (who's been in the States for the better part of this decade), I can unequivocally tell you that Americans have no idea what poverty is. In fact, Dinesh D'Souza has often referred to this is point in his debates with liberals, on college campuses. The poverty you see in India is, to put it modestly, gut wrenching. What makes the poverty in India so in-your-face is it directly contrasts with a lot of prosperity -- ultra-modern buildings and condos, sleek automobiles, chic styled folks, etc. You may be driving in a posh vehicle, but, at the traffic light, you'll encounter children with begging bowls. It makes Dickensian prose sound like a Grimms brothers' fairy-tale. Why do I say all this? My appreciation for this country -- this magnificent, blessed country and its people. Folks, please do not behave the negative hype of liberal weenies and so-called activists (civil rights, enviro-Nazis, college professors, internet hate-spewers, etc) regarding America. Please do not hate this country because you have no idea how bad things can be. The cliches that are talked about in America (liek freedom, opportunity, etc) hold water with folks like me, folks who have come from the outside. Folks like me have a real appreciation for America and not in expression of faux patriotism, before the start of a ball game. Larry, thank you for this wonderful article. I hope it gets forwarded to every high school student (and their parents) in this wonderful country. Folks, please wake up and learn to love this nation and its blessings.

Sri....
Thank you!!

Far to many people who live in this great nation do not realie what we have.

They spend to much time listening to the politians who main goal is to get elected. They promise them this utopia and then once elected guess what, reality. As long as you look to someone else for your survival and not yourself, you will alway be unhappy and will never get ahead.

Just want to share a story about my bleeding heart mother in law. She was planning a trip to India (since last week she has changed her plans) She could not decide whether to go or not. She felt bad spending the money on a trip when so many people were struggling because of the economy. I asked her if she was going to donate the money instead to some needy family if she did nt go on her trip, she said no. I told her to go on her trip. she wants to help the needy, but only with some elses money.

Calcutta, 60+ years ago

I wonder if much has happened to India in the past 60+ years since I was there a few days. Here are a few stories.

As we walked the Calcutta street in the morning, we saw many bodies lying on the street. Down the street came a cart and a squad of men. They would kick the foot of a body, and if they did not wake up, they threw the body in the cart, to be dumped into the Hoogli River.

==========

At the dock they were removing a huge concrete slab, several inches thick. Several hundred men dressed in loin cloths, shoulder to shoulder, squatted on their heels. In one hand was a small chisel, and in the other a small hammer. At a very slow pace, they would lift the hammer and let it drop on the chisel, and to the sounds of “… tink, tink, tink, …” a small puff of dry cement might appear. Sometimes a little piece of concrete would come loose, and be brushed back to other scrawny men who would slowly place it in a small basket. The man in charge said this gave daily food to many people, rather than just using a bulldozer. (Calcutta, India 1946)

===========

I was surprised when I saw beautiful US Army Nurses, and Red Cross ladies, walking the streets. I was even more surprised when I saw little boys holler “Bakshee,” (gift) then holler other phrases containing four-letter-words, not usually said to nice girls. After they boarded our troop ship, I asked a couple of the ladies why those boys said what they did. They responded, “The blankity, blank GIs told the kids that we would consider that a complement, and would donate more.” (Calcutta, India - - - 1946)

Someone once said
that America has the fattest poor people in the world.

As other posters have commented, I, too, think "poverty in America" is purely political class warfare. The stupid liberals/progressives/socialists have no program other than demagoguery so they create class warfare, blaming "corporate greed" and Republicans for the massive "poverty in America".

The real shame is that so many Americans buy into it! Can't they simply look around and see what we have? No, they are too self-centered and greedy and stupid.

Real poverty isn't far away.
My church has an annual pilgrimage just across the border in Mexico to build houses for the poor with an organization called Amor Ministries. The families live in shacks built of crates and scrap boards in what can only be called a garbage dump.

The "houses" they build have a cement floor, wood frame, cement walls, two rooms, with a window frame in each room. That's effectively it. No electricity, no bathroom, no kitchen. Yet when those houses are finished, the gratitude in the eyes and physically expressed is absolutely palpable.

The people in this country, rich or poor, don't have that kind of gratitude. The poor don't live in nearly that severity of squalor. Their basic needs are met, either by available work or available help, yet they aren't nearly as appreciative.

I realize I've painted with a broad brush. There are poor and rich that know they are blessed to live in this country. But there are those that believe that our nations' poverty is the biggest crises there is. It isn't. 10 miles across the border will attest to that.

Poverty? where?
Larry as usual put it right between the orbs. Our Liberal population is fixed on hating our country that it really is boring. Jim hit it on the head, we have been so brainwashed by political correctness we cannot smell the coffee perking. Wake up and realize what we have here in America. People risk their lives to get here, and none risk their lives to leave. Be thankful for what we have.

Larry Elder
Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" from Fox Searchlight was named the best picture of 2008 by the National Board of Review,

Someone else thought this was a good movie,Larry.

Let's all have pie.
If our country were also destitute would that make everything fair? Would the poorest of the poor in the world suffer less when America's economy is purposely and finally destroyed by boneheads? The size of the pie is limitless. We don't have to spread the wealth around by stealing from one group and giving it to another. We can make the pie gigantic just get the corrupt socialists and dictators out of our way.

Dear Aspiring Documentary Makers
These reader comments provide the most wonderful material for a wonderful documentary!

Get quotes from politicians about the "poverty" in America. Insert images of our alleged poverty juxtaposed with the true poverty described above. Get quotes from some (really fat) "poor people" in their air conditioned homes in front of their plasma TVs whining about their "plight." Juxtapose this with the living conditions of actual poverty-stricken people; insert clips of the gratitude expressed for the basic shelter (homes) that foreign aide builds for them.

Then see if you can get any liberal studio heads to distribute it for you.

Larry Please!!!!
Dems really believe they live in a USA that has been transformed into an absolute hellhole by the evil twins Bush and Cheney?

The shredding of the constitution, the 35,000,000 starving Americans, the racist country that spawned Duke lacrosse and Jena, LA, the 48 hour delay in rescuing New Orleanians, the cruelty to many good men in Gitmo, the overthrow of a nice fellow Saddam Hussein, the firing of attorney generals, the outing of Valarie Plame, greedy oil companies manipulating gas prices, Bush lied people died, Gen Petraeus betrays us, the surge will lead to an untold increase in violence, Bush planned and pulled off the housing bubble crisis, CO2 is killing us, etc.

Yes according to Dems the list of the wrongs committed by and to America under Darth Vader, aka George W, is long and varied but has been covered in detail by the New York Slimes.

Just because obesity is the number one health problem among the poverty class in this country does not mean that you live in a land of plenty and goodness. The Dems will never accept that at face value. Dems believe they live in the biggest sewer known to man all because those with BDS really know the score.

We have elected a president based on the politics of envy and victim hood.

Then again with the economy in the dumper, the MSM in the tank for him, every public sector employee and dependent voting his way, every black in the country voting for their bro, carrying 100% of the graveyard vote, how in the world did the guy end up with only 53% of the vote???!!!!!

Sri: Thank you
I so appreciate your comments. I have never traveled abroad, but members of my family have. What they have told me is truly heart breaking. I don't need to leave this country to know how wonderful it is - warts and all!

Slumdogs
What we call "poverty" here would be called "middle-class" in most of the Third World. A meal at McDonald's would constitute an opulent feast.

By the way, I saw "Slumdog Millionaire" over the weekend. A brilliant film. The director, Danny Boyle (a Brit) also made "Shallow Grave," "Trainspotting," "The Beach," and "28 Days Later." Check out these flicks. Boyle depicts human suffering in grotesque forms, but there is no denying the humanity of his characters or the skill of his storytelling.

There are NO...
...impoverished people in this country, only those who have less than others. Even homeless people are not improverished since there are shelters with food available. I cringe everytime I hear about one of these telethons that want to "feed hungry children." About 40% of "poor" kids are obese. I will venture to guess those that are in chronic need of food have a nice car, a cell phone, a nice TV and other amenities. They seem to think "other" people need to provide the necessities while they spend their money on luxuries.

Let's face it, some people aren't going to "waste" money on food when it's FREE for the taking. I just recently saw a cart filled with chips, cookies and soda...all paid for by food stamps. It's pathetic!

The actual people who are in need is a fraction of those that are just "takers"! Most conservatives I know would not take a dime unless their children were in genuine need and they couldn't possibly get it anyother way!

Government's war on poverty
The only thing the feds "war on poverty has produced, is more (of our own American brand) poverty.

Without poverty, government (liberal) has no purpose.

Why do they take 50% of our earnings? To help the poor? Or is it to reward political favors?

Think about it. Then find and read a book "The Probability Broach" by L. Neil Smith. He won the Prometheus award for best libertarian fiction

Anne on a mouse love it!
Your proposed documentary would be a real enlightener. Might want to include the poverty stricken view on politics in this country. Who they voted for and why!

Roger Moore made millions on his "Roger and Me" film. How about "Poverty Really?" Poverty US style vs India style poverty would be both humorous and seriously depressing a the same time.

Starving in America
The so-called "poor" people in America should have to trade places for a week with a truly poor person living in India or Madagascar. No cars, no toilets or running water, no electricity, TV, radio; no magazines or internet. Collect water at the one water spigot in the village, walk 5 miles to the river to wash clothes and dry them on bushes, walk 10 miles (most are barefoot) to market to sell a few vegetables and sleep by the road at night in both directions (no motels). No sunglasses, no hat, no sunscreen! No welfare checks or unemployment benefits, no jobs. No malls, no stores stocked with 20 varieties of thousands of items, no new clothes, no matching outfits, no makeup, no soap, no kleenex or toilet paper, no sanitary pads or tampons ladies! No false teeth, hearing aids, eye glasses; get sick, injured, difficult pregnancy, appendicitis or born with a deformity -- forget it, you're screwed. Planting rice, picking rice, hauling rice, eating rice day in and day out with little or no hope of change or opportunity to improve.

It would shut them up real fast and if they don't thank God to be born in America, get their fat butts up off the couch and out to work after that, send them back for good!

Susan/SoCal

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes: entire neighborhoods as far as you could see--probably thousands--of people living inside the city limits of Mexico City in crude lean-to or cinder block shelters, with dirt floors, and of course, no running water.

And yet, these people were the most generous, kindest people I've ever met, willing to give me their last meal, literally, not knowing where their next meal might come from, or if it would come at all.

I was humbled. In tears.

Thank you, LE, for this timely reminder. Let it it cause us to give, give, give to the many charities or places of worship which help needy people around the world.

Dave says:
The sheltered information a majority of people in the US see is TV of course. If you are a "poor" person watching TV, you know that it potrays a view of a world where there is a lot of stuff that you can't have.

I have recently read that many middle class people (lower, middle, upper) have been spending and living as if they were from the upper classes and are not aware of this because of the way "middle class" is portrayed on TV.

WANT vs NEED...

Americans are poor for what they WANT, while others around the world are poor for what they NEED. American poor will continue to be poor as long as the Government continues to provide for there NEEDS and gives then what they WANT. Others around the world will remain poor because their Governments cannot even provide for their Needs and their WANTS are not even considered.

JAG Ca
I believe the evil Michael Moore made Roger and Me.

Hey didja hear....?
Obama hired 3 LAW FIRMS ...

REPEAT 3 LAW FIRMS ...

to protect him from having to show his Occidental College documents ...

His Harvard Law School documents

and (drum roll please)

HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE...

Any idea why he would go to so much trouble and expense to prevent the American people from seeing his papers?

What do you Obamabies think?

Just business as usual in Obama land?

Or is he possibly hidiing something?

Obama Will Redefine Elite vs Commoners
Denise offers, "Millionaire Obama should really be "his brother's keeper" so that George Hussein Obama will not be a "Slumdog".

Good point. You can look forward to 4 years of "do as I say, not as I do": yours are to go to Public Schools, while his go to exclusive Private Schools on our dime (he uses a voucher that he won't let you have); you find money to pay rent, he gives his wife a $30K trophy ring.

Trust me, more to come. Heck, he's not even President, yet.

The Poorest Of The Poor..
When a real tragedy strikes ,such as floods, mudslides, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.,it seems to always be in the countries where people are already existing on almost nothing.

It is heartbreaking to see how they live. I have never been to another country, but have seen news shows and it makes me know the poorest in this country are rich compared to them.

Hard to compare...
...places like India or Africa to the US, as someone else here already said.

Yes, it is true that for a lot of the poorest people in the world, our poor look like the middle class.

But consider--why are the poor so much more miserably poor in 3d world countries than they are here?

No unionized labor, no minimum wage laws, no free public schooling, no Social Security for the retired, no disability, no Worker's Comp, no MedicareMedicaid, no food stamps, no General Assistance. Corruption, nepotism, cronyism, repressive governments, war. The caste system.

In other words--we as a society decided that we will not allow that kind of grinding, abject poverty here, and we erected social programs, and made our leaders accountable. It ain't perfect, but remember, conservatives--we don't live like Indians or most
Africans because of laws that protect workers and because of the entitlement programs that you love to hate.

So while we should have compassion and charity toward those poorest of the world, we should also be proud of ourselves for actively deciding that abject poverty of the sort in India is not to be tolerated on these shores.

A good editorial here:
Poor Hispanics account for all the recent increase in poverty rates.

From 1990 to 2006, the number of poor Hispanics increased 3.2 million, from 6 million to 9.2 million. Meanwhile, the number of non-Hispanic whites in poverty fell from 16.6 million (poverty rate: 8.8 percent) in 1990 to 16 million (8.2 percent) in 2006. Among blacks, there was a decline from 9.8 million in 1990 (poverty rate: 31.9 percent) to 9 million (24.3 percent) in 2006. White and black poverty has risen somewhat since 2000, but is down over longer periods.

Only an act of willful denial can separate immigration and poverty.

We need an immigration policy that makes sense. My oft-stated belief is that legal immigration should favor the high-skilled over the low-skilled. They will assimilate quickest and most aid the economy.

Gee Mr. Elder,
Do you count things like "taxpayer-funded education, lunch programs, and health care" as income? Because if your kids are going to public schools, they too benefit from the lunch program - nobody pays for a school lunch what you'd pay on the open market.
That aside, the cost of living here is also more expensive than it is in other countries.
If you'd been watching the news here in Iowa, you'd also know that the government won't LET you live in housing that you might accept. There are regulations to keep people from living in shacks along rivers and vacated properties. Don't go blaming the poor. BTW, having a decent roof over your head doesn't mean you have disposable cash. They take 1/3 of your income for the rent alone. Heat and electricity are on top of that. What they allow for a shelter deduction is "what you can afford on your income". You try finding shelter and utilities that meet their regulated requirements for $237/mo. You need to experience one of these programs yourself before you start attacking any of these people.

Us Po' Folk Want a Bailout
With all the "poor" LE writes about, I suggest that us po' folk get a BAILOUT!

Actually, I would rather that our tax buden be reduced. I donate tens of thousands of dollars every year to the less fortunate, who will only get poorer once the Taxman Cometh.

Comparing America to India is like comparing Granny Smith Apples to Bignay.

Mac Moore - Sorry
I was writing a post using your's, but Al Gore's internet got in the way or maybe it was Climate Change.

Anyway, I'm sorry.

I fully understand that life on the lower rungs of this society isn't all peaches and cream. But you seem to have missed the point of the article and all previous posts entirely. We have all these "safety nets" in place so that poor Americans don't have to live like the poor in the rest of the world. And yet all you can come up with is complaints. "It's difficult living under all these requirements, I have to fill out papers with a number of various agencies, I have to live in the homes that they subsidize, I have to use food stamps instead of just having free food delivered to my government subsidized door." Sorry, I have no sympathy for people that have life's necessities handed to them. If you want a better life, get an education. You were already offered one, but the government will pay for you to get another one if you'll just get up off your butt and do it. Then get a job. Become a productive member of society.

NotMyPrez
Not "Bitchin". Defending poor folks for being blamed for how well they have it here. You missed my point that they would live cheaper if the government would let them.
