Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Don't let it be misunderstood. Those who serve in our nation's military espouse values that confuse the left, confound their purpose, and leave them unable to understand, much less resonate with our service men and women. This week I saw why.

Five nights ago I sat at dinner with a United States Marine and an about-to-be winged United States Naval Flight Officer. They have been friends since childhood. The marine served in the South Pacific, Gitmo, and Iraq. The Navy NFO has been learning aircraft, trajectory, and the specific abilities of how to conduct a dog-fight, drop a bomb on a terrorist, and make it back to the carrier safely with a $44 million dollar piece of equipment. The occasion we were all together for on this particular evening was to celebrate the completion of the training for the NFO to take his next step into his days of flying missions into Iraq, Afghanistan, or wherever else the U.S. Navy decides he should.

Between his winging and his access to an F-18, however, rests a little appointment on the calendar. Those in military service know it as S.E.R.E.

It stands for Survive, Evade, Resist, and Escape.

Few in civilian life know much about it because of the intense nature of what it is. Stories have surfaced as to what others experienced in undergoing it, but even these are few as those who do persevere it are expected to not release the details of what happens.

The description as best I could decipher is akin to being caught behind enemy lines. Your objective is to survive for periods without the basics. You are to do so for as long as possible by not being captured (hence the "evade" phase.) When captured you are to react as though those who hold you are in fact the enemy, and as they do things like waterboard you, break fingers, etc., you are to rely upon all your ability as an honorable member of the defense forces of the United States to resist, not give up your information, nor of your mission. The more you resist the more those who run the program are encouraged to hurt you to tempt you to break. The only major caveat they are asked to observe is not to break any major bones.

Comforting.

At some point in the two weeks you are given a chance to plot an escape, attempt that escape, and you likely will be caught and punished for doing it.

The entire point of the exercise is to wear you down, to wear you out, and to test your ability to survive under literally the worst possible circumstances.

The NFO's commanding officer made mention to him the next day following his winging ceremony that when he went through S.E.R.E. it the easiest portion of the time for him was waking up in frozen conditions and attempting to break ice with a knife to get himself some usable hydration.

My friend the NFO has known for some time that this period of his training was coming. I had hoped with great earnestness for his part that it would have already happened prior to his winging and that our time together would be one of great celebration of his accomplishment. It still was, but as the marine and navy officer conversed there was a sense that this excruciating portion of his training was drawing near, and there was a sobriety about it all that struck fear in the rest of the observers.

The Naval Flight Officer has to experience S.E.R.E. in order to be fully ready to face the possibility that he will be downed behind enemy lines, that he will be required to undergo this entire routine (complete with torture) again in the future. As an NFO it is something that is required for him to experience.

For the marine that was with us, who had enlisted out of high school and already served tours with distinction, he too had heard stories of the difficulties of the S.E.R.E. program. He too sensed the impending pain, stress, and anxiety that his life long friend was about to undergo. But for the position he held in the Marine Corp. he had never been assigned to go through S.E.R.E. Though he did attempt to soften the blow by mentioning the possibility of groups not getting captured. (One of these urban legends involved Navy Seals that worked together so well they were able to out fox the SERE coordinators and take over the base.)

But here's where the lump in my through nearly suffocated me.

The marine relayed (mostly to his friend) but to those of us hunched around the tiny table that he had once requested assignment to S.E.R.E.

"I asked if I could go," he said quietly.

"I knew they would probably say no. But here I was getting ready to ship to Iraq and I couldn't help but think, 'If they'd just let me go through it, at least I could know what to do and help my unit survive if we needed to as a group.' The idea being sort of that I would go through it for the rest of them."

The conversation moved to other things.

But not for me...

I was struck by the marine's simple, no-nonsense demeanor in relaying the fact that he had asked his government to torture him for the well being of the unit he would have responsibility for in what was at that time the most dangerous theater we were engaged in. He wanted to be hurt, so that he could gain the knowledge of how to save the lives of some of the men he had not yet been introduced to.

That has haunted me every night since.

On my return trip to New York because of the harsh weather I was forced to lay-over in Atlanta for a night. The next day I noticed an entire unit of soldiers hoping to get stand-by seats on the plane the airline had summoned to come get all of us who had missed our flights the day before. One of the officers in charge of these men was seated across from me in the terminal.

After a few minutes I crossed the aisle, shook his hand and asked, "You coming or going Sir?"

His reply, "Both!"

"We've been traveling en route for about 18 hours, trying to get home to New Jersey for Christmas," he answered quietly. "We return to Iraq on January 5th."

I thanked him for his service, his leadership of the fifty men and women in front of us, and the pride with which Americans who love our nation look upon them.

That is something the left does not share. They scorn their existence, mock their mission, belittle their purpose, dedication, and commitment. From John Kerry's implication that only stupid people go into the military, to members of the Congressional black caucus accusing the military of racism, to the Godless leftists and progressives who want even the mention of God removed from the winging ceremonies. Even the new President Elect recognizes that liberals can not be put in charge of our military for the sake of the country's good!

As our plane touched down at Liberty International airport in Newark three hours later, these heroes in their camis, who previously had been fairly quiet broke into cheers. Their childlike exuberance reminded the rest of us how much they truly love the nation we share.

And as my thoughts returned to my friends the marine and the NFO, I was reminded that sometimes they love it enough to suffer, even endure voluntary torture for it. I stand more grateful, more humble, more indebted, and more supportive of those who serve us all.

I only wish everyone, especially those from the left who label these men baby-killers, rapists, and murderers, knew the truth behind America's finest, bravest, and most self-sacrificial.

God Bless you soldier, sailor, and airman... wherever you spend this Christmas!

You are not forgotten.

I fought for your right.
I served. 0.S.M.C., 1st, 6th. Loud and proud. Returned home in 1971. San Francisco. There were demonstrators. I was cursed. I was spat upon. I was called murderer. I was called baby killer. I could have worn skivies, I wore my Greens. I went to Viet Nam to defend their right to not understand and be pissed off. Just like I was there to defend your right to excercise your skills of Freshman Comp Lit 1001. I'll give you a C- for your 'what I did on my summer vacation' essay. Nice story but no documentation. Pick up a weapon or move along. Semper Fidelis.

The Danger of Extremes
Make no mistake about it, our soldiers are the finest in the world. But bringing Vietnam into this B.S. is muddying the water.

Everyone here seems to forget that most of those young men were forced to go to Vietnam. In most cases, they didn't choose to join, they went because they were given a number upon signing up at their selective service board. And if their number was chosen, they went. Or, they resisted.

A whole generation of young men were lost in a fight to preserve the interests of the likes of Shell oil and the corporations that made up the industrial military complex.

Do not be too hard on the draft dodgers of the time. They fought against putting their lives on the line for money and oil and greed in the only way they knew how--by dodging the draft. This does not cheapen the service of our soldiers nor does it negate the sacrifices made by those who resisted the draft.

The problem was, and still is, in this country, the extremists. The extremists spit on my father when he returned from Nam, thus giving all who were against that war a bad name. The extremists of both parties now continually claim the other is wrong, when neither is right or wrong necessarily.

If you want the solid truth, the Democrats escalated the Vietnam war, instituted the draft, then managed to lay the whole mess at Nixon's feet. Studying this era taught me to follow the money. The Democrats were just as guilty as the Republicans for what happened to our soldiers and the country itself. Yet, neither wants, even now, to shoulder their share of the blame.

And still, the American soldier fights for all of us, irregardless of whether we're liberal or moderate or conservative or even extreme in our views. God bless our soldiers.

Great article Kevin, Right on point
I only wish that all of those who spend their time degrading us could be forced to spend some time in our shoes, under fire from an enemy determined to kill us just because he doesn't like our religious beliefs or nationality.

Semper Fi, and Merry Christmas

I would have wished that your experience (as a civilian) that caused that "lump in [your] through" [get a proof reader] had tempered your ideological irrationality that condemns the entire "left." This is writen by a former Navy fighter pilot who served during the Korean War.

chickenhawks
my dad enlisted in the marine corp in ww2 at 17 right after pearl harbor.spent 17 months in the south pacific on the battleship uss mississippi.he told me he was a sergeant.i saw his discharge papers one time and it said he was a pfc.i asked him about it-he laughed and said when he got back to the states he was walking down the street when he was passed by a navy officer.this guy got irritated because he didn't get saluted.so when he grabbed my dad from behind and spun him around my dad was swinging and knocked him out.so he got busted.now he was a law and order guy his whole life but there is one thing i'm sure of.he wouldn't have liked the bush administration.protecting texas fom oklahoma and having other priorities just wouldn't have cut it with him.having 9 guys electrocuted because contractors are cutting corners wouldn't have either.oh and reclassifying getting blown up by road side bombs as "non-combat" injuries wouldn't measure up.voting against the new gi bill?nope.just who are for the troops and who aren't.its hard to tell sometimes.but sending someone to do a job you are not willing to do doesn't seem like a laudable trait to me.at least give them everything they need to succeed and get home in one piece.like non electrified showers.

Service
To all veterans and active duty service personnel:
Have a merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season. Many may disparage you or misrepresent your efforts, but know in your soul that there are a great many more, veterans and civilians alike, who hold you and yours deep in our hearts. You will never be forgotten. You will never be left behind. May God keep you and your comrades safe and return you to your loved ones with heavenly speed.
God bless you all.

HALOMan:
I agree with you that service in the military is not for everyone. Marriage to the military is the same way. It takes a certain type of personality to be able to thrive in the military environment - not that someone is weaker because they are not compatible with military service, just different. I meet civilian wives regularly who shake their heads and say,"I don't know how you do it." Well, you do what is necessary when the time comes. I have also come to the belief that there is a certain element of truth to the old saw "If the military wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one." Being married to someone in the military means that you have to understand and accept that your spouse has a higher commitment, and that there will be MANY times over the course of a long career when he will not be able to be there when you need him. It takes a lot of mental and emotional toughness to overcome that.

SERE 1967
Went to Warner Springs SERE 1967. Beating was used, among other things.

This was by far the best (and most intense) school I ever attended in the Navy (enlisted air crew). The instructors were dedicated to the mission of the school, and very professional.

The experience left me very sensitive to the fate of VN POWs, who suffered far worse every day of their captivity. It also left me more prepared for any sort of life stress.

I'm also proud that I never got captured in any of the Evasion parts :-) Too scared of the subsequent treatments I observed to be caught.

Serving in the Military
I have to disagree with the suggestion that everyone "serve in the military" and then give an opinion. I served in the military for over 30 years and I came to find out that the military is not for everyone, and everyone is not for the military.

Service in the military is not an "experiment", it is a commitment to service. It is a commitment to something greater than one's self. It is a commitment to a belief that we serve something, and yes sometimes someone, greater than our individual selves or needs. That something is our nation and what it represents, and the someone is the man, or woman, standing next to us.

Having been a graduate of the Special Forces S.E.R.E. course, I can state emphatically that I am grateful to have attended. As someone else posted, it tells you more about yourself than you'll ever know. It is also a course I would never want to attend twice.

The purpose of S.E.R.E. training is to teach our warriors how to SURVIVE with HONOR should they ever become a POW. SEN McCain is one of the finest examples of surviving with honor.

The two young men addressed in the article have already demonstrated their honor by choosing military service over person gain. S.E.R.E. training would not give them any more honor than they already have; it would serve to teach them how to preserve that honor.

As to claims of "we support the troops, but not their leaders"; horse-hockey!!!!! Who do you think will ultimately become the leaders, and where do you think the leaders came from?

As to claims against the military of being "baby-killers"; after 30 years of military service, I never met a service-member that performed an abortion, legal or illegal.

To all, keep our brave warriors in your prayers this holiday season. They have, and will continue to sacrifice more than most will ever understand.

Merry Christmas to all!

Well said
"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants.
We see more, and things that are more distant, than did they,
not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they,
but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours."

good article
I enjoyed this very much. thank you for sharing.

Graduate
of SERE, Warner Springs CA in 1979. Was waterboarded. Liberals are abject cowards

Well Done!
Mr. McCullough:

I just finished reading your "Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape" article. Thanks for writing it. I am recommending it to my Men's Fellowship dedicated to America's Godly Heritage (http://americasgodlyheritage.blogspot.com/).

Thank you, Mr. McCullough
I've been an NFO's wife for coming up on 19 years now. He had to attend SERE school as a LCDR, which made him a target for the "captors" running the school who tried to "break" him as an example to the men under his command. He dreaded having to endure it, but has a lot of pride for having done it. And, when the members of our own military are waterboarded as part of their SERE training, it makes it seem kinda whiny when liberals want to make it illegal to do to our enemy combatants.

I know it's "understood" that military people are naturally more aggressive, and relish the "kill people and break things" part of their jobs, but that's not my experience at all. The military people I know believe in something greater than themselves. They understand that the best defense is a strong offense, and they understand that our fight is against those who want to destroy all of those freedoms we value so highly. They understand that our enemies have long memories and are willing to wait patiently for their chance to strike, while soft Americans with short attention spans complain that the war is taking too long.

My husband happens to be one of the kindest, gentlest people I know, but his dedication to his chosen profession is unwavering. He just returned from 2 yrs of duty on the USS Eisenhower, during which we made the decision for the rest of the family to remain behind. (We had 5 children at home, 2 in high school, and didn't want to uproot them.) He's back home now, able to get return orders to our home, and I am grateful to have him here.

God bless our troops...

Does every...
... article by KMC have to denigrate people who disagree with him? The ad hominem attack on "leftists" and "liberals" was completely unnecessary in this article.

I happen to know people who consider themselves "liberals", and they are no less respectful of the military than am I. Caricaturing those with whom you disagree politically serves no good purpose.

The catch
Of course, the Right must continue to convince itself that those who disagree with the failed policies of the Bush administration are somehow anti-American, anti-military and pro-terrorists.

It's a well constructed and rather sadly successful complex plot.

The catch is that those who most loudly proclaim their support of the troops, also support a President who put their lives on the line for an imagined enemy, gave them insufficient armor and shameful conditions at Walter Reed, etc., upon their return.

God bless ALL those who are on the front lines, serving their country -- whatever country that might be.

God forgive those of us who have sat idly by and permitted our President to squander the safety and lives of our military.

Leftist hypocrites
"I only wish everyone, especially those from the left who label these men baby-killers, rapists, and murderers, knew the truth behind America's finest, bravest, and most self-sacrificial."

Are these the same Leftists who want abortion on demand and try to keep late-term abortion legal? The same Leftists who have more sympathy for rapists and murderers than they have for victims and claim that the death penalty is cruel and unusual for the poor rapist and murderer (of course hacking and vacuuming and jamming scissors into the heads of babies isn't cruel and unusual)? The same Leftists whose essential nature is cowardice and try to hide it behind what they call "intellectualism" such as: "Make love, not war." Too bad Hitler, South American or African dictators or muslim terrorists don't have enough love to go around to make that possible. Or "War solves nothing." Which, of course, means that slavery still exists in America, Napoleon ruled all of Europe until his death, and Hitler now rules the world (by the very nature of his beliefs he would have destroyed the sovereignty of Japan) and no Jews are left alive except in the form of lampshades and other inanimate items. In fact, every Leftist who disagreed with Hitler is dead. After all, why fight? Let's all be intellectually happy and not go to war.

Christmas poem part 2

I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas Gram always remembers."

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of Nam,
And now it is my turn, and, so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures; he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent, and he carefully pulled from his bag
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

"I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

"Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.
So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting, and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

"For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Christmas poem Part 1

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed 'round the room, and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree, I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps, I started to dream.
The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,

Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps, a Marine huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said, "It's really all right,

Well Said, Indeed
As an enlisted Navy aircrewman, I too went through SERE and deep water survival training in 1968. You learn just how much your body can take and what your worst fears are. I always thought, if everyone went through this, attitudes would be a whole lot different. At the end of the training, when they raised the American flag, there was not a dry eye in the camp!!
The way we were treated, when we came home, was beyond shameful and despicable. This same bunch, or their descendents, are now going to be in charge of our country. My heart aches, as I see a return to those dreadful times. We should never again tolerate this treatment of our military and I, for one, will not abide it! These troops deserve our respect and should be honored for their sacrifice. Remember, all wounds are not visible.........

Let me get this right.
Are those who post the "baby-killer" charges against soldiers, the same posters as those who support the killing of 40 million babies via abortion?

Thank you
to all those who have prepared to serve, those who served in war or in peace, and their families.

Freedom is priceless and cannot be bought by government, it was earned by your service and sacrifice.

Dependable Americans show their appreciation in their love and loyalty to America.

We are free to speak our minds but should always do so in honor of what you have achieved for us.

May God bless you all and our Country.

Thank you so much!
My hat is off to our military! Thank you for your sacrifice, sense of duty, and your love of our great country. Without you we would not enjoy the freedoms that we all enjoy today. I am so sorry for the ridicule and hatred that you suffer from those that feel entitled to everything. Without you they don't have the freedom to protest you. Isn't that something? They don't have a clue. You rock!

To Hal: Obama on abortion
I said:
"...You voted for a man that would have the life of his own grandchild terminated because it might be an inconvenience to his daughter...
"
You replied:
pure rubbish ....

I reference Obama with his own words:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNzmly28Bmg&feature=related

Any baby in his daughter's womb is his grandchild! So much for rubbish.

Till another post...I'm sure you'll be commenting to other TH articles as well.

Jeffersonian Constitutionalist asks:

"Or could it be Liberals are wrong?"

YUP!

The World according to Liberals

Why do we need to train our service people to resist torture?

Torture doesn't work according to Liberals. According to Liberals we are the only ones that torture. According to Liberals Torture is against international law. Surely the Terrorist know this and would not torture our service people.

Or could it be Liberals are wrong?

Thank you, Mr. McCullough...Well said!!
For the suggestions that the left and anti-war people should join the military to do their fair share--I say "NO-NO-NO!! The thought of a fear-filled coward (and that is what they are no matter how much they protest) even being near my son-in-law's unit (his 3rd tour in Iraq) horrifies me more than the radical terrorists there. The first sign of trouble, that poor excuse for a person would crumble and put everyone else in more danger. Please stay in the US, America and military haters, all safe and sound, where you are out of the way of the real work that needs to be done by real grown-ups. It is a nasty, ugly and dangerous world. Not a world for wimps. Only a fool believes otherwise. God Bless our Military, and may He keep you all safe.
Merry Christmas to all!

Mr, McCullough -- Thank you, sir
Excellent article. Excellent.

Trapper Frank
Thanks for the council. Contribute more often.

Most of the people responding to this...
don't grasp the fact that the two servicemen mentioned in the colum are the way they are because they believe in something greater than themselves. In my 26 years in the military, these are the three most important things I learned: 1. Make a decision, 2. Own your screwups and correct them. 3. How to work with people I didn't like for a greater organizational good. By the way, SERE school teaches you more about yourself than anything else.

Been there - done that
Group coherence is dependent upon individual integrity. SERE is to enlighten the individual to personal limits and establish those limits - integrity- higher .
The group benefits. The country benefits.
Finding personal limits is a valuable experience for anyone.
Still don't understand why the right 10% spends so much energy 'fighting' the left 10%. It is the extremists that dont know what fighting really is.

Former Liberal
Being a former liberal who used to believe every thing the media espoused, realized after years of reading and investigation, the left can be described as more or less as hiding behind the guise of "for the good of the people"but instead are actually saying for the good of me.Statistics bear this out as conservatives give more money, more time, and more materials to charity---that said I would have to agree that the liberals in the military were liberals BEFORE they got there as the concept of self sacrifice is not a liberal philosophy----unless you attach the phrase "as long as I get something out of it."

Re:Left wingers!!!
Look, the left have never thought we should be in the middle of the East and trying to fight against Islamist extremest, and the left has always had a touchy feely way of looking at stuff and so, thus there must be a time when the extremist will attack again and the left will look like Moe,Larry and Curly when it comes to confrontation, and in the mean time the poor US citizen will get ripped off again!!!

DavidMac: Thanks, and you also make a

good point... "they against the US military, they rail against corporations, Christians, conservatives and any traditional organization or ideology" the very things that made this a great country!

Or, I'm afraid what WAS a great country.

I haven't seen or heard one single good or promising plan from Obama....

Anne @ 3:01 PM
Good response to Websmith's comment. Websmith missed the target which you hit right on.

It's the radical and extremist leftists in America who are caterwauling about the war. In my previous post, I mentioned Murtha and Kerry as two of the leftists I consider traitors. Dick(head) Durbin is another.

The left in America is simply anti-establishment. Not only are they against the US military, they rail against corporations, Christians, conservatives and any traditional organization or ideology.

The left in America is self-centered and pedantic. The left adds nothing to the debate, only noise.

Ric
Sorry, Ric, he's talking to mainsteam liberals. You're talking about a fringe.

doofASS The BABY KILLER doesn't get it!!

MOST of the people who voted FOR Obama had NO CLUE who and what they were voting for....

52%-48% is NOT a big win...Not by a long shot!

And, how about that Zogby Poll????

512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points

97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates

Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions

57.4% could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by GUESSING.)

71.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by GUESSING.)

82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by GUESSING.)

88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by GUESSING.)

56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by GUESSING.)

And yet.....

Only 13.7% failed to identify Sarah Palin as the person on which their party spent $150,000 in clothes

Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter

And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her "house," even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!

Only 2.4% got at least 11 correct.

Only .5% got all of them correct. (And we "gave" one answer that was technically not Palin, but actually Tina Fey)

THESE are the people who voted for "change."

websmith: Who doesn't get it???

It's not McCullough who has turned military service into a left right issue...

Unfortunately, it IS in many ways a "Left/wrong" and "Right" issue.

As I posted to doofASS The BABY KILLER above (#31) it's NOT the RIGHT calling our troops "baby-killers, rapists, and murderers"
it's their favorite Rep. Murtha and the left, including Code Pinko who label these men baby-killers, rapists, and murderers...

Don't Get It
Anyone who tries to turn military service into a left right issue is insulting every soldier who has ever served.

Soldiers sacrifice many of their liberties and subject themselves to hardships so that there can be a left and a right and people can have the privilege of listening to both points of view. The right is no more dear to a soldier's heart than the left. A soldier prays that the left and the right will have the sense to listen to each other and prevent the government from frivolously putting them in harm's way. Soldiers are the only ones who are supposed to, without questioning, follow their leaders into battle. You are supposed to think before you do things.

As I was facing Viet Nam and unconstitutional conscription, I asked my dad, who received two Gold Stars and three Purple Hearts during WWII, what it was like to be in battle. He told me that most of the children fought, but many just hid. He said it was his duty to protect both. He said that soldiers don't start wars and they don't want to be in them when there is one.

George Bush was in much more danger flying a jet plane at high speed over the US than Little Algore was in Vietnam, thanks to Big Algore the congressman getting him a safe job where he wouldn't be in danger.

Ric #72: Every liberal in Congress is a leftist crazy.

In LBJ's 1965 speech, he announced that the reserves would not be called up to go to Vietnam. six months later, all the reserve units were filled. How would you classify the people that filled the units? Opinions please.

S.E.R.E.
I have heard of this course that the special forces have to go through. It has to be such so they can survive if that time of need comes. As to the lefties that hate our men in uniform, they should be run out of the country. I was in the NG for a while, and was told that should anyone strike any of us when on duty ,it would be treated as a crime. Verbal asaults should also be treated the same.Deport the jerks ,seeing that they don't love our country anyway. Why do they want to live here in the first place?

Not every Liberal is Leftist Crazy
Not every loyal American is a Conservative. Liberals serve in the military too. Sometimes it’s Conservatives who don’t want war and the Liberals who sign up to defend our country. Just listen to Woody Guthrie’s “Lindbergh” some time.

Among McCullough’s many problems, he bases his stereotype of the Left on the vocal behavior of a few Leftist Crazies without understanding that that stereotype has little to do with mainstream Liberals. McCullough doesn’t bother to listen to mainstream Liberals to find out what they believe and why they believe so --- perhaps he just doesn’t want to let facts get in the way of his personal prejudices.

I could easily do the same with Conservatives, taking the beliefs and actions of some of the far out Rightist Crazies and projecting that back onto mainstream Conservatives, but I am not so oblivious to reality as McCullough seems to be.

Vitaglubet . . .
You give the "draft dodgers" too much credit. Although the left written history books exalt them, they were nothing more than SCUM not worthy of being on the bottom of my shoe. Although they professed solidarity with the communist north Vietnamese, their protests STOPPED when the draft was eliminated. I have NEVER met one that admitted his true reason for not wanting to serve.
While I was serving MY COUNTRY, they were busy jockeying for positions in our LEFT WING universities and news media. Looks like they succeeded in gaining control of those two "institutions".
I was at LA coming back from Vietnam (USMC) and put up with their types.

Many fail to understand
No one hates war more than a soldier. War always exacts a great price, and places unspaekable burdens on all those involved. Those who choose to serve, do so willingly, knowing the full weight of their decision. That is what makes them special.

The American soldier not only learns the art of killing, but learns humility, and self- sacrifice as well. One cannot comprehend the willingness of servicemen to sacrifice for others, unless they are a member. We are a family unto ourselves.

We are a family like no other. In our family, we must constantly put into practice, actions, and make decisions that have the potential for grave consequences. That is our bond. We do not take this lightly. Our decisions are always based on any potential outcome. Placing an emphasis on the safety, and well being of all involved.

Thanks for the great article. God, Family, Country

That is not what happened at all most folks under 40 don't even see color now. Blacks voting for one of their own over a rich old white guy or a fundamentalist white gal? That was not race that was selfinterest

Yes indeed, many did indeed vote for their own self-interest, and not that of the country. They voted for a man that wants to tax success to reward others for their failure. He promised to overtax 5% of the population so that the other 95% pay far less, and also increase the numbers that pay no income tax at all. That was as close to a bribe as I can imagine. Now how can that be a fair election, having 95% of the population voting against 5%?

You voted for a man that would have the life of his own grandchild terminated because it might be an inconvenience to his daughter.

This country is a sick place when everybody is out for their own self-interest, and not what is good for the country as a whole.

KMac & S.E.R.E.
Kevin,

Good article about the two Marines. Thank you for your kind words concerning our nation's veterans. Unfortunately for them the MSM will only print the negative and too many reporters only want to catch our troops making a mistake so they can get their expose' and earn their journalistic bones. This of course, is the news the Liberals rely on when judging service men and women.

For you who identify with being a Liberal, consider this: When I was a uniformed Viet Nam Vet attending the U of Colorado in the mid-sixties, it wasn't Liberals who spit in my direction, muttered under their breath, or even had the nerve to ask as I walked by, if I'd killed women and children. The political cartoons of the day depicted Admirals and Generals with missiles in each hand demanding more defense dollars for even more death and destruction, notwithstanding that it is politicians who send us to war, not Admirals and Generals. Liberals, your reputation is well deserved.

Conservatives, where were you?

Thank God, todays returning veterans are being treated better.

I disagree. I can understand disagreeing with our involvement in Iraq, and Afghanistan, both of which I do, but one's belonging to the political and cultural Left occurs as a result of a distorted view of both politics AND culture; not due to military service in either srea of operation.

Kevin should enlist
I doubt American soldiers are fighting for American conservatives... they're fighting for America. Kevin McCullough should put his money where his mouth is and join the military. But no, he instead prefers to sit on the sidelines and exploit other people's military record to bash his political opponents.
That shows neither bravery, nor class, nor patriotism.

Primavolta
The only service personnel that are on the "left" are the ones who signed up for service hoping to get a "free" college education. As they have learned, NOTHING is free. They were all upset that they had to honor their contract. They expected "something for nothing" and got hit by the facts of their agreement. Oops! (I suppose they could have opted for the brig.)

Politicians should serve
I agree that our military service personnel are a special breed. Brave, unselfish, generous, loyal AMERCANS!
I believe that any and all politicians should serve our great country in some way before being allowed to run for political office.
Only if they GIVE to their country, could they possibley understand what our service personnel sacrivice so that we can be safe and free.
Kerry was a phoney, even could be considered a traitor for his actions and for visiting the North Viet Namese while the war was still going on - berating our service personnel and our country while kissing the backside of the NV communists.

Until one has walked a mile in the shoes of those who fight (and have died) and sacrifice to protect us and our way of life (as it should be lived - Constitutionally), no one has the right to "spit" on that service.

Most of the politicians in office now have destroyed our country - violate, on a regular basis, our Constitution and their Oath of Office, and should be removed from office asap!

One of the most egregious lies the American left espouses is that they "support the troops".

Folks
This is a holiday season to celebrate amid hopes for the future and peace. Why then does someone like Kevin with many here's support still preach division and separation and not good will? Why wallow in the negative when this can at least be a moment for goodwill and repose? Why? Can this be good for the soul?

Do not confuse military
I hold the military dear in discipline, decision making, endurance, firm, kind, dedicated and above all sacrfice. All fine characteristics that the military teaches with strictness and would be considered a good child rearing endeavours.

The character of an individual has nothing to do with reasons to war or not to war. That debate has never really taken place since our forefathers at the revolution with volunteers.

All facts considered and emotions removed, I dare say, war would be rejected.

If war was voluntary. Not military voluntary, but voluntary to enlist for that war. That would make the debate of war at the core of the issues.

I tell you wars would not be able to raise the recruits to fight any war that America has had or most of them. It is not because Americans are afraid of death or sacrifice. It is because they were taught to absolute resist a fight at all costs from child hood and defend when required.

I would ask the TH readers (those who aren't trolls or stricken by the mental illness of liberalism) to consider the source when reading Halitosis Drunken Hue & Cry's posts. He's known for his "poop & scoot attacks" (make a derogatory post, then flee) on this site and for unprovable, contradictory claims (like the fighter pilot & patroling claim I mentioned above, services actually performed by 2 different military branches)
Having actually served in the military, (1973-1979, US Army) I can positively state that most serving men & women actually hold rather conservative views. I have my reservations about Hal's claim to military service and can inequivically deny his claim of any sizable contingent of lib-tards in the military! They'd be square pegs, in round holes! I have been to Washington several times in the last 8 years to counter the “anti-war, anti-troop and anti-military” libs from Code Pink, the SDS and other groups whose self styled names I don’t care to remember. Their vitriol and hatred was not directed toward the administration but at any vet or active duty service member present. Oh sure, they had the signs and chants against the President, but their spittle, gestures and stupidity were directed at those far better than they could ever hope to be.
I personally know real vets who intercepted SDS punks on their way to deface the Viet Nam Memorial.
The way VN Vets were treated on their return home was and still is a National disgrace and I will not allow it to happen to those currently serving.

The NYC state of mind. Nothing like it, can't be described, must be experienced.

Merry Christmas.

Gene Touchet
Whenever I see your moniker on these boards, I know there will be no shortage of liberal propoganda in your post.

As for this foolish and deceiptful statement "Smoke and more smoke won't hide the fact that the epithets of this war are hurled toward the Administration, not the troops."

You idiots on the left have been doing your level best to demoralize the troops from the very start. Your insults and vile accusations
have, in no way, been limited to the administration. There have been plenty of derogatory and inflamatory things said about our troops and their commanders - you left wing nuts have accused them of horrible atrocities, murder, torture, etc.., and called them anything but gentlemen during practically the entire Bush administration. Sure, you have had plenty of vile disgusting things to say about our President, but most of the sleazy attacks have been against the troops and their mission.

As to your ignorant implication that only those who serve in the military have the moral authority to commit troops to battle, that is b.s. and you know it. It's just another strawman argument liberals use to try and distract people from the real issues.

Shame on you lefties for your extraordinary lack of gratitude and appreciation. You don't have a patriotic bone in your body, Mr. Touchet.

Tribute to the Fallen Soldiers

History will record that the American Soldier and those American Soldiers who have fallen, rank in the greatest humans who have ever lived on this planet.

The American Soldier have freed millions in bondage and defended the freedom of America with willingness of the ultimate sacrifice.

The Fallen American Soldier is someone who walked the hero's path. Someone who walked into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Soldier waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, their families and America, its citizens and freedom.

The American soldier is the fiercest Warrior ever in history, because their mission is the defense of family, neighbors, America and freedom.

The families of the American Soldier, while their faces beamed with pride, their hearts were filled with anxiety and tears as they watched their American Soldier leave to defend them and this Great Country.

Families and neighbors look with horror as the military vehicle stops in front of the home of the American Soldier, to inform them of the ultimate sacrifice of their hero.

No honor can be too great; every tribute is too small for the Fallen American Soldier and their families.

God Bless the American Soldier and their families!

After reading about S.E.R.E., and...
...these two servicemen, one who was about to take the course as a matter of his specific training, and the other who wanted to take the course just to gain what he believed would be useful knowledge in the field, all I can say is... WOW.

Thank you for the blessing and I just did tell you how I feel.

I am a Proud American - GOP
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God,indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

I am the american who not only supports our American Soldiers, but listens. I am the American who was unable to serve, but if given the chance would of. I am the daughter, the wife and the mother who has listened learned and understood what our military is really about.

May God bless our country, our soldiers and all the Liberals who need to take a plunge and enlist for 4 years, then come back and tell us how they feel.

kevin the liar just in time for Xmas
"...I thanked him for his service, his leadership of the fifty men and women in front of us, and the pride with which Americans who love our nation look upon them

That is something the left does not share. They scorn their existence, mock their mission, belittle their purpose, dedication, and commitment. "

Kevin, you managed to insult not only the troops but Christmas with your nastiness and hate. A large number of the very people you claim to praise; you insult. Many troops are left leaning moderates and Democrats. You grab at the extremes and prolaim ait is all. As a proud retired Air Force aviator who did attend the school, I ask you to take your phony sentiment and holiday thoughts and shove them somewhere you might enjoy. You owe an apology to both the troops and Christmas. But heck I know slease like you seldom, if ever, accept responsibility or offer apologies.

That said please do have a nice holiday season and please do remember a large number of Democrats and liberals are keeping you safe too as well as conservatives but few extreme conservatives. Military life tends to breed support for others and the knowledge that you are only as stong as your weakest member. This knowledge tends to vaccinate us for the exact opposite offered by the extreme left and folks like you on the extreme right.

Brave Warriors vs Soulless Libs.
Thanks Kevin, Excellent article!

My 8 year old daughter and I send monthly "care packages" to our brave service people.

We always include "a taste from home" package which seems silly to most but it's always really loved it consists of packets from fast food shops.. ie, Arby's sauce, taco bell hot/fire sauce and McDonald's chicken nugget dips, as well as the happy meal toys.

I know it sounds dumb but it's loved and the toys usually go to the kids in the areas they're serving in. It's great PR and appriciated.

The MSM and elite libs have tried to put a kee-bosh on it and limit stuff sent but so far they've been unable too and I hope it remains that way.
What they choose not to remember is that while they're sipping their Starbucks latte they only reason they can do it in peace is because of our brave troops.

I want to thank all the brave service people and wish them a very Merry Christmas.

In the mind of most of today's smug liberals, our soldiers are rednecks -- and rednecks, when let loose and not under control of "civilized" liberals, do what comes natural to rednecks -- they act rednecky. Liberals feel that way since, in their parochial view, who would enlist and volunteer unless one is poor, has no chance for upward mobility, and has a tendecy and lust for violence?

They believe this since most have no friends or family in the military. These elitists perceive the soldier and the military as below their class. Perhaps they heard of a grandfather who served back in the days when there was a draft, but not today.

Why do they so despise our military?
Why do they never come to its defense?
Why do they never understand the frightful plight of the soldier who, when fired upon by the enemy, has no recourse but to fire back if he wishes to stay alive?
Why does the liberal not understand what he has seen countless times, namely, that the Jihadist enemy positions women and children in his front while shooting at our soldiers?

It is because the liberal moralizer deep down knows that he does not have the physical courage and might of the soldier. Compared to the soldier, he is a coward and weakling. His strength lies only in bringing law suits and sounding morally superior to the rest of us.

Good Comments (so far) for Kevin's....
Terrific Column.

The fact that many writers like McCullough and John Hawkins remember to honor the men and women serving our nation speaks well of TOWNHALL.

Thousands have given the last full measure in the current Terror War. They can never be honored enough. America's fighting men and women represent the very best of our nation. Always have and always will.

In contrast, the American leftists who despise our military represent the very worst. Always have and always will.

REAL HEROES
LET US ALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD FOR GIVING US THESE WONDERFUL PEOPLE COPS, FIREMEN AND THE MILITARY THAT GIVE THEIR ALL INCLUDING THEIR LIVES SO YOU AND I. INCLUDING THE IDIOT LIBERALS, MAY LIVE AND BE FREE....I PRAY FOR EACH AND EVERY ONE AS I GIVE MY HEART FELT THANKS

Great Article
There is a possibility that the protestors and draft dodgers of the sixties were being honest but I doubt most of them that I know. I'm a 67 year old that has watched these people become adults and many of them seem to compartmentalize their integrity. They cheat on their tax returns. They are receiving disability and golf every day. They take thousands of dollars from their parents estates and then go to Medicaid to pay for those same parent's Nursing Home care. I hope you can see the difference between those that have character and integrity and those that don't. I'd put my trust in the wonderful people in our military over our liberal friends and I'm sure I'd be right almost all the time. God bless them for allowing us to be as free and successful as we are.

McCollough, you are wrong
when you say some libs don't understand. They understand, all right, and they know when weighed in the balance they are found wanting. The only way they can handle the guilt is to sneer at the heroic. The root is envy, self-loathing, and sour grapes.

Insensitive liberal media

Thanks, Kevin, for this outstanding article. It came at the end of an evening that started with astonishment and disdain for a major news network when it broadcast a photo it felt to be “the picture of the year.” It was of the back of a man in a black suit with his feet above the ground. It turns out it was Barack Obama doing pull-ups.

What wouldn’t John McCain give to be able to do something like that. Well, we know…..McCain wouldn’t give his soul.

Barack Obama should undergo a two-week S.E.R.E. exercise prior to assuming the presidency. But then, this is the man who has spent almost $1 million to ensure his real birth certificate and school admissions records are kept under wraps.

God Bless our Warriors
After 22 years I am getting ready to retire, Dec 31st, from the USAF. As enlisted then as an officer, both active duty (14 years) and reserve (8 years) I have never found any finer people to work with. I have and would again trust them with my life as I hope they would trust me. I will miss the lifestyle and the friendships I have made but mostly I will miss the feeling I got everytime I put on the unform. No leftist liberal will ever understand how we feel about our country. God Bless America and Merry Christmas to all.

Highest Honor
We cannot pay enough respect or honor to the fine men and women who serve our country in the miltary and sometimes give their lives for us.

The liberals would like to have us believe that all we have to do is join hands with the rest of the world, sing kumbaya, and all the world would be at peace with no need for any military anywhere in the world.

If only it were so. But the realists among us know that it is a dangerous world. And no matter how hard you try there will always be someone out there wanting to hurt you, kill you, or take away your freedoms.

Use of military force should always be a last resort but can never be taken off the table entirely. To believe otherwise is living a fantasy.

To all U.S. military stationed around the world and their families who have sacrificed so much I say thank you and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

"Maybe that makes me as wrong as the Protestors were"

Are you kidding me? Although I agree that carrying resentment for anyone is not good for you, I think any person w/ a human heart can understand why you would NOT want to return to a place where such ugliness was projected towards you. I thank you and your brothers for your service. And I too am ashamed, as an American, for those people. May they live a life of repentance for the hate they perpetuated against decent, moral people who served w/ honor. Which, contrary to j.f'n kerry and his traitorous friends in congress, is about 99.9999999 percent of our uniformed personnel.

I hope Ur right, but I doubt it..I was quite involved as a recipient of the "AntiWar" Folks at Oakland/SF aprts during the 60-70s..In fact it took me more years than I care to think about to get over the Resentment/Shame I felt for those people.. I'm glad today's Outstanding young men and women are being treated at least some better..In fact, I've never been back to the Fine State of CA since..Maybe that makes me as wrong as the Protestors were.. I HOPE NOT

Kevin McCullough said,
"I only wish everyone, especially those from the left who label these men baby-killers, rapists, and murderers, knew the truth behind America's finest, bravest, and most self-sacrificial."

Uh, they do know. Yes, you can bet they know. Instinctively. That is exactly why democrats, from leadership on down, HATE our finest. It is for the same reason that they hate the real meaning of what Christ represents: "Greater love has no man than this..." John 15:13
