The flesh is weak and we human beings often do foolish things that conflict with our own moral values. Not to excuse the hypocrisy of that, but who's the better person -- the fellow who advocates high moral standards and falls short occasionally or the person who never falls short because he advocates living an immoral life? Clearly, the former is the better husband, the better father, the better Christian, and just plain old better for our society. Hypocrisy is a notable failing, but there are still far worse things than hypocrisy.

The likelihood of a decision being wise is often inversely proportional to how far removed the decision maker is from the person directly affected by the decision. This is why it's so disturbing to see the federal government trying to regulate everything from what kind of TV we can own to the sort of light bulbs we have in our homes.

Even the most dull-witted bunglers in the mountains of Appalachia or the outskirts of Berkeley probably have a much better handle on their own individual circumstances, how to make themselves happy, and how to spend their own money than a Ph.D from Harvard with a genius level IQ who's sitting in Washington, D.C.

It is patriotism that helps transform a mere stranger to a countryman that, under the right circumstances, a man will help and defend, sometimes at the cost of his own life. For love of country, people will donate money, toil for countless hours in the most thankless of jobs, and even take up arms if necessary. Such a noble urge should be encouraged, taught to our children at every opportunity, and honored for the good it does for our society.

Too many people in our society have been persuaded that most rich people have, at worst, done something immoral to become so wealthy or at best, that they're merely lucky. Although there are some people who fit that description, most affluent people got that way by serving their fellow man in some form or fashion. Moreover, these successful people often tend to pay enormous sums in taxes and employ large numbers of people directly or through their purchases. That is something to be admired and encouraged, not frowned upon, lest we learn the tragic lesson of Aesop's farmer, who killed the goose that laid the golden egg.

We live in a "microwave" society where we expect everything right now, exactly the way we want it, with zero mistakes. That's not the real world. Human beings are not robots, and, yes, we make mistakes, fall short, and disappoint.

It's not a bad thing to have high standards, but there's very little to be said for destroying men's entire careers for a single thoughtless statement, demanding that politicians address our every problem to make us happy, or expecting soldiers to never make an honest mistake in the middle of a war zone.

Put another way, excellence is achievable, but perfection is not.

For all of us to live in an open, free society with a wide variety of different views, we have to be able to tolerate a variety of widely diverging opinions. However, this is not enough for some people, who insist that we treat every opinion and lifestyle choice as equally valid and healthy for society. But, what they are failing to understand is that there is a difference between tolerance and acceptance. Just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should.

If one is black, brown, yellow or white, the prevailing thought is that he should take pride and celebrate that fact even though, just as in the case of my eye color, he had nothing to do with it. The multiculturist and diversity crowd see race as an achievement. Race-based groups like the NAACP, the KKK, La Raza, and the American Nazi Party do very little good and much harm to our country. In fact, the very idea that something as arbitrary as skin color should determine people's actions, beliefs, and political party is odious and un-American. Moreover, it has long been apparent that the sort of ethnic tribalism inevitably displayed by people in these race-based groups is actually more of a source of strife in our country than the racism they are supposedly combating.

There are many reasons why people should prefer capitalism over socialism. One of the most compelling is that it is better to be poor while still having the opportunity to become wealthy through your own efforts than to be poor and have little opportunity to advance, but to share your fate with almost everyone else.

Because we humans are such short-lived creatures, we tend to have a myopic view of the world. We think that because we're civilized, everyone else is just as civilized. However, the truth is that nations like America are the exception and the rule, historically, has been little more than the law of the jungle.

The world is full of evil men with bad intentions who will take more than a mile if you give them an inch. When we forget that and think we can just talk out every difference with our foreign enemies who have sworn to kill us -- or begin to treat home grown criminals in our jails like they're victims of society instead of victimizers who got where they are by preying on their fellow citizens -- there is always a heavy price to be paid.

It's always amusing to hear a politician rail against "special interests" because when they begin naming names, you'll notice that they always seem to be the groups that are influential with THE OTHER political party. So, what inevitably happens when a different political party takes power? The old special interests are shoved to the side, people cheer, and then shortly thereafter the new special interests are catered to and the cycle starts anew. The key to stopping this behavior isn't to change parties or put some new rule in place; it's to get the government out of the business of handing out favors in the first place.

there is something unethical about it and all (i am indicting both sides here) politicians claim they do not decide issues based on lobbying or corporate pacs but it has to influence them even if its subconscious.

will we get a share of their profits if the company turns around.

Sure they have a say, but as an individual. When corporations give to both parties or candidates as a corporation they are buying a seat at the table. In other words hedging their bet. While this is not illegal it is unethical because it does give them more of a stake or say than the average American who does not have that kind of money.

Everyone is painfully aware of the numerous pedophile teachers. Therefor it follows that we can save all children from pedophiles if we just eliminate public schools and vilify all teachers as evil pedophiles who prey upon their students so as to discourage people from becoming teachers.

Patriotism
"Patriotism is a virtue" and conservatives love to brag about their patriotism---but patriotism means not only love of one's country but respect of one's government. All I see on townhall is disrespect of government and a steady intention to disrupt and dismantle government, substituting private initiative. If a patriot is proud to serve his country as a soldier, he can also be proud to serve it as a civil servant. And he should also be proud to pay his taxes.

Every human being whether he knows it or not has a world-view.
THis world-view affects the choices you make in life.
Your god does not judge mankind so I must assume your god is not holy or just.
This idea will effect what kind of person you are and your daily walk in life. To be practicle I don't think you really can believe this. It doesn't fit in with the reality you live in. I hope you don't have daughters to protect from predators.
The free-market can be proven to be the best system of economics without talking about God.
It can also be shown that the free market system fits in with the Bibles teachings. Our founding fathers set up a constitutional republic based on their world views.

Don't forget flipping houses was huge money for a while. Like other investments some people stayed in too long. With the 0% interest rates about 5 years ago my husband and I looked at each other and said,"That's gonna leave a mark." People bought more than they could handle. The free market is not perfect but it works better than socialism. I think there is an old saying, "Let the buyer beware". After all we are greedy sinners. Well christians are supposed to be better. But I tend to not trust anyone.

I can give you answer on Medicare and Medicaid. The government had no business getting into the healthcare business. It is an unconstitutional activity that is responsible for most of the healthcare mess today. Your voting libertarian, go check out Reason magizine. I used to subscribe. They have put forth some of the best material explaining how healthcre got turned into a big cartelized rip off and the welfare state is center stage on that story.

What we need to do is find a way to turn it all back over to the free market not head for more socialism. By the way, libertarians are just conservatives who haven't grown up yet. Notice that Ron Paul isn't running back to them anymore?

The subprime mortgage crisis is the result of liberalism in action not capitalism. The banks were forced by the Clinton administration to make the loans to people who could not afford them for fear they would be charged with discrimination.

I thought it was a very good column. As a pragmatist I believe that the purpose of thought is to guide action and ultimately tested by the consequences of belief. So as the consequences become known we then need to go back and fine-tune our thoughts. It’s a group effort of theory and practice. Very often in the midst of political battle we loose track of our guiding ideologies that we have developed over the years. Reviews such as this column are important.

In fact, lamenting how the culture of India has been allegedly "damaged" by the introduction of capitalism and high-tech, the Left has often claimed that weaving on hand looms was morally superior to working in a "cold, sterile" computer office.

We've been arguing moral philosophy for 2,000 years and haven't reached much consensus. There is a theory, by some philosophers, that morality actually originates from motives deep inside our subconscious mind and lower brain centers, and we then put a high-sounding rationale on what is actually a visceral reaction. If that's so, then conservatives and Leftists will always disagree because our basic psychological makeup is different.

Please learn the definition of a "straw man" argument. Hawkins never said that "liberals lead immoral lives by-and-large". YOU did.

Hawkins referred to "fellows" and "people", with absolutely NO reference to political/social/racial/religious/financial affiliation. In fact, the words "conservative" and "liberal" never appear in his article at all - even when he's quoting someone else. (Yes, the caption for the picture of Margaret Thatcher calls her a "conservative" leader, but the picture is not part of the article.)

YOU'RE the one who assumed that "the fellow who advocates high moral standards and falls short occasionally" is a conservative and "the person who never falls short because he advocates living an immoral life" is a liberal. Sounds like you're the one with an irrational bias.

God is a Republican
The paradox that is the conservative movement these days is definitely reflected in the thinking portrayed here.

Studies show that 80 percent of U.S. claim to be Christian and of that 80 percent, there is little difference in regard to liberal or conservative.

Here's the paradox. In order to claim liberals are immoral then one has to claim that liberals are not Christian. Yet liberals claim to be Christian, ergo church-going in Massachusetts is higher than in most of the rest of the country.

The upshot is that conservatives calling liberals immoral are also calling them heathens, non-Christians, which implies God is a Republican.

Claiming that God is a Republican by saying liberals are immoral disgusts most decent people and probably is the one thing that makes the conservative movement look kooky and something crazy.

Calling liberals immoral makes this not a political party, but a holy war party. Most people are not interested in holy wars and thus treat the conservative political movement as more than a little crazy. It's time to get over liberal bashing or forever be the minority party.

Couldn't he say, with conviction, that the Republican Party left him?

What would Reagan say about the "unitary executive"? "Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty." About civil rights? "I favor the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and it must be enforced at gunpoint if necessary." About individual liberties? "Protecting the rights of even the least individual among us is basically the only excuse the government has for even existing."

So, you are going to claim that liberals lead immoral lives by-and-large? If that's true then we should be able to quantify that:

1.) Liberals live in conditions the result from immorality.

2.) Conservatives live superior lives due to morality.

Well, lots of studies have been done in this regard.

Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the country and is one of the most liberal states. And the states with the highest divorce rates?

People of have done studies to try and prove that atheists are less moral than religious folk. But guess what, even those studies have fallen flat. In fact there is even evidence to the contrary, atheist represent 9 percent of the population but less than 1 percent of the prison population.

But the correlation, actually, has nothing to do with being atheist and everything to do with education. Seems that most atheist are educated and their prison population percent reflects the overall population's prison percentage for the same level of education.

People have been making these claims that 1.) non-Christians are immoral, 2.) Atheists are immoral, 3.) Blacks are immoral, 4.) Liberals are immoral, 5.) Men are lecherous humps, etc. forever it seems. Yet there has not been one definitive study that can conclude, "yes 'um, Christians are more moral than Muslims and here's why."

That's why we live in a free society John, because all things being equal you get to choose. You get to follow the morals of the religion of your choice. If we had all decided to be Amish we'd be living in a country by a different name by now.

Dependency and Power that Corrupts

It is near impossible to extract that power from the current structure. We live in a time where government has grown so large and with so many paid off or dependent that we the people can no longer be free from this parasite. It's costs have and will become destructive.

The power on a local, State and Federal level and those that feed upon it have become too numerous.

There is optimism in that we can all be "saved" and then there is the world.
