New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has joined the rogue’s gallery of adulterous politicians who appear before the press to confess their “failures” while using their wives as supportive props.

Spitzer’s press conference Monday followed media reports that Spitzer, who as attorney general of New York prosecuted two prostitution rings, has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington, D.C. hotel last month.

Spitzer began his press conference statement by saying that he wanted to “address a private matter.” He included an apology to the public, but didn’t say what the matter involved and didn’t admit to any illegal conduct:

"I have acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family and violates my or any sense of right or wrong,” said Mr. Spitzer, who appeared with his wife Silda at his Manhattan office. “I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public to whom I promised better. … I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself. I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.

Spitzer’s wife of 20 years, Silda, was at his side and was visibly upset.

Hopefully, the Spitzer family will experience forgiveness and reconciliation. That takes time and work. But exploitation of the family by the one who broke the trust is hardly the right catalyst.

So why does a man who says he needs to “regain the trust of [his] family, further abuse whatever trust remains by using his traumatized wife as a prop at his press conference or as his defender-in-chief?

Recall the following with wife at his side:

* Former Democratic President Bill Clinton did have “sex with that woman.”
* Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.) resigned after admitting extramarital affairs.
* Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) whose phone number appeared on the client list of the “D.C. Madam.”
* James McGreevey, former Democratic governor of New Jersey, admitted to having a sexual relationship with a man.
* Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) who pled guilty to disorderly conduct after trying to seduce an undercover police officer in a public restroom. Continued...

The Nottingham scandal: more pernicious
...The Scandal That Probably Won't Get Aired...

That "Naughty," whose divorce records revealed that he had paid $150 to join adultfriendfinder.com (which bills itself as "The World's Largest Sex & Swinger Personals Community"), was almost as much of a surprise to locals as the news (way back in the day) that Sen. Gary Hart (D-CO) was having yet another extramarital affair. But the most tantalizing -- and most disturbing -- revelation was that he wasn't the only judge implicated.

Although their federal counterparts are grossly overpaid for what they do, in relative terms, Colorado judges don't make an awful lot of money. Some first-year associates make more than the $ 100,000 or so that our judges get. You can't really afford a $ 1,000/night hooker on a state judge's salary. So, why would they appear on the list?

If this story ever got out, it would be pure Pulitzer. Think about it: if you gave one of these girls to a judge for the night, wouldn't he be eternally grateful? What if you slipped a fat wad of Bens under his robe in the bathroom at a seminar, so he could buy one on his own? Would you think you could get a fair hearing in that judge's courtroom, if opposing counsel had been unusually generous? The mere thought of "judges" on that client list should freeze the blood of the average citizen.

"To distrust the judiciary, marks the beginning of the end of society."
-- Honoré de Balzac

Think about this for a moment.

Consistency is a virtue not often found
in this bailiwick. Frankly, you're more likely to find it over at daily Kos.

Wayne: "Hypocrisy Lives Here
I don’t recall any of you extremists asking for Sen. Vitter or Sen. Craig’s resignation. I suppose that’s because you’ve lived a double standard for so long (Christian’s for the war and such) you’re blinded by your zombie-like groupthink."
-----------------------
You have some serious Kool-Aid drinkers here. As for me, I am 100% consistent. I've called for Larry Craig, David Vitter, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Tom DeLay, Bob Beauprez, and a host of others far too long to list to be criminally prosecuted or at least, removed from office. And yes, that list also includes Ken Salazar, William Jefferson, William Jefferson Clinton (who shouldn't have been impeached, but certainly should have been criminally prosecuted), and many others. Eliot Spitzer left of his own accord, and I give him props for that.
