WASHINGTON -- John McCain, like many Americans who should know better, extravagantly praises Theodore Roosevelt. He is a kindred spirit of the impulsive Rough Rider, but the visceral McCain is rescued from some of TR's excesses by not having TR's overflowing cupboard of ideas.

In "Theodore Roosevelt: Preacher of Righteousness" (Yale University Press), Joshua David Hawley, 28, a former clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts, demonstrates that TR, far from being, in Henry Adams' acerbic description, "pure act," was a man of many complex ideas. Some were admirable; many were repellant.

He was an individualist who considered the individualism of others an impediment to the social unity required for national greatness. Having read Darwin's "The Origin of Species" at age 14, and having strenuously transformed himself from an asthmatic child into a robust adult, he advocated "warrior republicanism" (Hawley's phrase). TR saw virtue emerging from struggle, especially violent struggle, between nations and between the "Anglo-Saxon" race and lesser races. Blending "muscular Christianity," the "social gospel" -- which sanctified the state as an instrument of moral reclamation -- and Darwinian theory, TR believed that human nature evolved toward improvement through conflict.

This dark vision of progress through strife made him advocate concentrated national power to serve his agenda, which was radically more ambitious than the Founders' vision of limited government maintaining order, protecting property and otherwise staying out of the way of individual striving.

Like Winston Churchill, who said that mankind had entered "the region of mass effects," TR said "this is an age of combination" -- of vast interlocking economic entities. Big was, he thought, beautiful and, anyway, inevitable. So government, and especially the presidency, must become commensurate to the task of breaking American individualism to the saddle of collective purposes. Here TR and "Country First" McCain converge.

TR, who a critic said "keeps a pulpit concealed on his person," almost wore the word "corruption" threadbare before pastor McCain came along to make it the centerpiece of his political lexicon. TR, like McCain, rejected James Madison's vision of politics driven -- and freedom preserved -- by peaceful conflict between competing factions.

McCain's signature legislation (McCain-Feingold) restricts what he calls "quote 'First Amendment rights'" in the name of taming "special interests." It expresses a TR-like rejection of Madisonian politics, a rejection McCain echoes when equating consensus -- about the public interest, as McCain understands it -- with patriotism. But another name for the "partisanship" McCain deplores is ... politics.

Ted Kennedy, speaking to the Democratic convention, advocated an end to a politics of "group against group." TR would have heartily agreed. But what is politics for if not the adjustment of such conflicts? McCain was in a TR mood when he said the bailout of the financial system should be "above politics." Wrong. It involves the fundamental political questions about freedom, justice and role of government.

TR invested the materialist doctrine of evolutionary struggle with moral significance for the most manly "races." He wanted the state to rescue America from the danger, as he saw it, that a commercial republic breeds effeminacy. Government as moral tutor would pull chaotic individualists up from private preoccupations and put them in harness for redemptive collective action.

Such as war. TR's response to William James' idea of a "moral equivalent of war" could have been: Accept no substitutes. TR wanted the body politic to be one body, whose head was the president. He disregarded civil society -- the institutions that mediate between individuals and the state, insulating them from dependence and coercion. He had a Rousseauan notion that the individual could become free only through immersion in the collective.

By the time TR tried to recapture the presidency in 1912, he was gripped by what Hawley calls "shocking personal hubris" that manifested itself in an anti-constitutional populism. For example, he thought the Supreme Court should invalidate no law that enjoyed public support, and the people should be empowered to overturn court decisions by referendums.

McCain's identification with TR is, fortunately, superficial -- more about TR's exuberant personal style than his intellectual constructs. McCain's preference for public involvement over private preoccupations stops short -- so far -- of TR's vague but menacing agenda of building civic identity through compulsory national service.

TR's collectivist nationalism became unhinged, polluted by sinister advocacy of eugenics, and by statist sentiments such as: "The woman must bear and rear the children, as her first duty to the state." McCain's Rooseveltian interest in our moral reclamation is at least better than that.

McCain's to Become a Footnote
It makes no difference whom McCain says he holds as his hero/mentor. His politcal idol seems to be Ghandi. He wants to have peaceful coexistance with the Democrats and doesn't accept that they will slit his throat as soon as he falls asleep and he's dozing off right now.

Shut up about the damn earmarks, John. You just voted for $150BILLION of them. It's the absurd budgets and entitlements that have created the $53TRILLION debt.

The Liberals are defeating you by making you own the Fannie/Freddie Disaster. Pretty amazing that everyone who has a fingerprint on it has a "D" after their name leading right to His Highness, Prince Obama. Most of the public beleives that the Republicans and financial conservatism has done it becuase nobody except Bill O'Reilly is in Barney Frank's face.

If McCain wants to win he needs to be a "Maverick". On Tuesday night, at the first economic question, heneeds to tell the tail of Franks, Dodd, Schummer, Raines, and Johnson. Name all of their names. He need to ask Obamah about the $147 Million that he and Ayres spent on the Chicago School System and changed nothing. Start the house cleaning TODAY.

If he doesn't have that much of a will to win, then he should step across the aisle instead of reaching across. Get over there and be a whining liberal like the rest of them.

Get out of the way and let Sarah get the top of the ticket.

George Has A Propensity To Ridicule...

George may as well say he's making stuff up as he goes along, then admit he hates McCain so much he's willing to trash everything, including Palin, that is associated with him. George, just admit you're in the Obama camp and quit trying to pretend you're a conservative.

Something is deeply wrong

This mortgage meltdown could have been fixed in the six year Republicans were in power.

As McCain has INTIMATE knowledge of the S&L fiasco, the FACT that he didn't more strenously object shows me he doesn't have the leadership skills and/or he learned NOTHING from the experience.

Now we have the Democrats doing NOTHING for the last two years.

I find them all culpable. I think it impossible for Congress to write just and good regulation.

We need to take charity and manipulation of value and risk out of the market. If the gov't wants to give my money away, they should take it directly from my income for better transparency and accountability.

What frightens me about John McCain is that his explanation about his push within a Republican controlled Senate we're ineffectual and now he wants to lead our country, choice our judges and implement policy with his "rollover" mentality with Democrats and Republicans.



A Thoughtful Piece by George Will
George Will's article is definitely a slow read which is fine with me as I tend to skim-read and perhaps have lost a little discipline in the process. I would conclude from his article that TR may be the wrong icon for John McCain to emulate or at least, to admire not because TR was leading for the wrong reasons , but because fundamentally it is not in John's makeup to be another TR. TR was a quintessential egoist(not to be confused with egotist) according to what I have learned from George Will's article. John has neither one of those character traits nor the shared philosophies enabling him to repersonify TR for his vision as president. I agree that we should not look back and model policies after other politically prominent icons such as John Kennedy or Ronald Reagan as so many of our politicians most often do these days. I believe that all presidents are shaped by the critically important events of the day and instead must lead accordingly relying on their core values and convictions. Therefore, we as informed voters judge the candidate's character as foremost when we lodge our vote for him/her not by whom they want to emulate or admire. That would be naive to do so.

You write, "Therefore, we as informed voters...." Using this Website as an example, after the years and years of visiting it, I count only a dozen informed voters, including you. The rest of us are all happy-go-lucky, if you give me mine, types.

My own thinking, as I read Will today, is remembering that line from Shakespeare (any spelling of his name will do, as he himself did), that goes something about the evil that men do living after them, while the good is oft interred with their bones -- I paraphrase, of course.

To me, it looks like our pundits are already running out of things to say, re this election.

Whatever one can judge about TR, he was a leader.

is up there on Rushmore with three other flawed humans, all of whom were caught up in the action & ideas of their times. As is McCain.

The critic always has an easier go of it than the movers & shakers, esp if he's 100 years out, 28 yrs old, and not yet aware of his own 'shocking personal hubris.' What's not surprising is that Will latches on to even that questionable piece of judgment for something to lob at McCain. Very boring.

For me, the 'centerpiece' of McCain's run is the character of the man. Like it or not, that -- and not ideas or 'role models' -- is what will define the office once he is elected.

Who, then, is Obama's 'role model'? Like everything else about him, it's anybody's guess!

ABC's "Conservative"
I don't think McCain was thinking about TR's 19th century ideas about social Darwinism. George Will has consistently defended evolution throughout his career; must be the tender-caring version of Natural Selection.

No one is innocent...anymore
Being a Canadian that has lived here or 20 years, I am still dumbfounded by this rhetoric of socialism equals communism. Government,if used properly,should play a role in matters that affect every citizen. Universal health care is something that should be a no-brainer. The argument from the right that it's a step to socialism...you know what? A little bit of compassion for your fellow citizens is not a terrible thing.This country pays more in insurance premiums than I payed in taxes in my "homeland". The argument from the right is "we can't let the government take over healthcare"...meanwhile we have insurance giants dictating our health based on their profit margins. The cold war is over...move on.

Save us the contrived historical allusions and just type "I support The One" each week until November.

A Buzzard change to a bluebird?
George doesn’t say anything here that a lot of us have been saying for a long time. TR was the quintessential RINO and the first to use the term “progressive”. And of course he did not believe in the Constitution. His signature issue and legislation was unconstitutional, “trust busting”.

McLame is essentially the same, si why would TR not be a hero for McLame. No George did not say he was voting for the Vomit, but just because McLame is not as bad the Vomit and he nominated Sarah Palin doesn’t all of a sudden change the buzzard into a bluebird.

I agree, Brian. It sure seems like he's negated his stand on that issue with his vote on this.

It's amazing how this monumental treasury raid of nearly a TRILLION dollars was simply bum rushed through Congress by reps who hardly read it and Bush who didn't even waste a glance on it. Un-fu@king-believable.

The legal sharpies are already finely scrutinizing the document and carving out their own slices of this turkey. The bill will come PAYABLE ON DEMAND.

I share your concern about McCain being Mr. Nice Honorable campaign Guy with a bunch of ruthless political wolves. I wish somehow they would slap him around or torture him a bit to wake him up from the dead. They are his enemies. Oh that the hand that reaches across the aisle could be stabbed.
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were... excuse me are the primary sacred political money milk cows of the Democrat Party. Who will show the political linkage of the Wall St. gang and the Democrat Enablers? Why don't the Republicans mentions the attempts to regulate and reform these socialist injected financial giants? Where is public stigma for being self serving crooks? Who challenges Obama new claim that he protested sub prime loans two years ago? Please George Bush can you continue to take a bit more hell by by giving a history of your reform attempts to the American people? Please leave office swinging. McCain can you become a loud mouth reformer? America needs a moral voice to address wrongs. Take your chances with a large conservative base, what do you have to lose if your losing? I believe Teddy R. is pulled out of context, he is the one who championed the little guy by breaking up huge

If you want a thoughtful read, try Goldberg's 'Liberal Fascism'. He makes the case that TR and Wilson were two sides of the same coin which was Fascism, although they called themselves 'progressives' then. Sound familiar?

TR was the manly, robust type while Wilson was the erudite college professor. But they were both for social regimentation, and Wilson was able to implement much of his socialist agenda as part of his war effort.

There is nothing liberal about 'liberalism' - they simply hijacked the word to hide who they really are - leftist fascists.

Take my advice and enlighten yourself on who these people really are.

My problem with someone else paying for my health care is, where does it end?

For instance, is it wise for a society to be paying for old people's continual demand to live on?

Old, which I am, is over 70. I've been lucky to have enjoyed everything this life can offer. There's really nothing else to do, that I desire to do.

While death isn't all it's cracked up to be, in my opinion, it's still the only way out of here.

Heart transplants, etc., how long?

If you can pay to live to be 100, fine. I think it will break all nations that try to provide this to those unable to pay for it.

That's the problem with socialized health care.

Sooner or later, under socialized health care, it will become governments' warrant to pull the plug. I think we should re-educate ourselves, to not let that happen.

You know you are correct. . I had never thought about it in these terms. I have been in medical sales all of my life and have spent hours upon hours in surgery watching unbelieveable surgery on some elderly whose time had come. It is kind of cruel to say it, but it is true. With government healthcare we will be making the government our God as to how long we will live.

I think TR would be spinning in his grave if he knew McCain was comparing himself to the "Rough Rider." Teddy would have been right down there on the border protecting us from the invading hoards. on the ideas of TR, and the extent to which McCain subscribes to them.

And if ideas should not enter into the decision of whom to vote for this November, then we certainly will get the government we deserve.

I suspect TR had a first rate intellect.

But that does not mean his ideas were always sound.

Karl Marx had a first rate intellect, yet many of his ideas had disastrous consequences.

No, I am not suggesting TR was a communist.

Will makes a good case that TR advocated a meddlesome, strong, moralistic central government that wanted to "immerse the citizen into the collective", to use Will's term.

And I think Will is correct on that.

Any genuine conservative would be repulsed by such a notion.

I don't think McCain has a first rate intellect, unlike TR, and so only adopts a few of TR's concepts on a superficial level.

TR had far more in common with his cousin, FDR, than with conservatism.

Our nation has not had a nominal conservative president since Reagan, and even Reagan violated conservative doctrine almost as often as he practiced it.

Yours of 2:37 pretty much explains why i will not vote for McCain. He is a major factor in how we got here. The CINOs had their chance and they blew it. As the chickens come home to roost, best Obama be at the helm. Joe and Jane Sixpack/American Idol don't know the difference between a Senator and a representative. They can't tell you the name of the majority leader in either house. They have no idea who is responsible for the mortgage mess. But they know hard times and who is in the WH when hard times occur. I want it to be a socialist like Obama so socialist ideas get examined and hopefully rejected. Our prosperity is built on education, opportunity, reward of merit. We are reaping the results of discarding these for equality of results. Its time for the fools to figure out the Emperor has no clothes on.

George regales us again within his insightful analysis of McCain flaws. Memo to George, we know McCain is flawed. Please check the alternative. Sure, lets take a big cannonball into the abyss of Socialism.

Could George not write this tripe after the election, or at least after a similar analysis of the Obama political persona. While there is 20 years of the messiah's life unaccounted for (the fable Dreams of My Father does not put much in the fact column), George could consult with a real journalist, Stanley Kurtz, fully evaluate the Chicago Annenberg Challenge files, and put together a piece on the Obama and Ayers commitment to reform the nation through a Marxist takeover of the schools. George could take us on a thorough examination of the messiah's courtship and marriage to Marxism.

Not holding my breath. George despises McCain, is tight with the Bushs (who also despise McCain...despite popular fiction), and has allowed these loyalties to supersede the the greater well being of the nation.

Whew...finally got that read!!!
Will's column was extremely interesting and it makes me want to read the book. Having said that, Will himself is, as always, extrememly difficult for me to read. I am not an idiot. I finished school with a B average and I did it 40 years ago when grading was legitimate, but for many years I have found it to be a chore to read Will's stuff. I find that I must usually read each sentence at least twice and rephrase it in my mind in order to get what he's trying to say. Unless his subject is very interesting, I'll usually give up after after a paragraph or two.

Perhaps Will is really not writing to people like me. Perhaps he sees his style as more important than his ideas. If so, I think (Will would use "perceive" or some other $5 word here) he has succeeded because while many praise his writing, few praise his ideas.

There Was Plenty Of Time.....
for McShame to nail Obama to the wall of communists, liberals, marxists, and fellow travelers. But he has not done that. Instead he is a poor excuse of someone standing up for the US. Open borders, NAFTA agreements, pork but not earmarks, legislating the wrong kind of restrictions on campaign finance, and crossing the aisle so that he can get to the mic and camera first. He is well known for the McCain Feingold debacle but not well known for anything else. That puts him among the leaders of poor legislation, one step ahead of Obama without any. But Obama is about to remake the US in his image.

The lesser of two evils
An interesting article even if the author's bias does shine through. It's true McCain has his share of flaws however, the bottom line is he is the lesser of two evils! Obama is so radically left he will be the ruin of our country.

I am happy to finally read someone else that has the same problem with Will that I have. I am college educated with a Masters in Clinical Psychology, but have always found Will very difficult to read. My own personal complaint with him has always been his tendency to use big words that very few people understand, and were not necessary. It's like he is constantly showing off how smart he is. This is the first article I have read in years, because I just gave up trying to read him. It wasn't worth it.

Use your imagination more wisely Will
I just don't see what Will is getting at, I barely see the comparison but most importantly I think comparisons should be made to Obama- let's say to Stalin rulership- now that seems more fitting to the day.

Will comparing history to McCain doesn't seem sensible- McCain surely isn't wanting bigger government like Teddy wanted, he wants to implement ways that government will not depend on taxpayers and taxpayers not depending on government. The Fannie-Fred scandal is a very big set back- a forced signing over of our tax money- but if the cards are being played right we will get over the crunch and remove this political plague from the play book.

Exposing the men who reaped oodles of tax dollars in this scandal should be enforced NOW, and we the people should be allowed to take back what's rightfully been taken from us- I want the fancy cars and houses they have- and I want to see the eyes light up of individuals who need such items. Let's have one big kickin' yard sale and auction!
I think Will's imagination should be utilized in writing an article about such a take back, don't you?

Teddy Roosevelt Was An Oddball
T.R. sounds like some sort of a nut job. His attacks against individuality and loners goes against the American grain. McCain compares himself to only the warrior aspects of T.R and not to his oddities. McCain is far from a maverick and is just an ordinary senator. If not for his being a war hero we would have never heard of him. Obama is by far more interesting but an enigma. For the sake of curiosity alone I would vote for Obama.

George Will is a Cerebral Michael Phelps

To accuse George Will of "using big words that very few people understand" just to "show off how smart he is" is like accusing Michael Phelps of, "Having a tendency to swim faster than all but a few people just to show off".

A better specimen of arrogant ignorance you could not be.

George Will is one of the ten best writers of the last half century. George Will is to human communication what an Olympic athlete is to human physcial ability.

Olympic athletes break records and show us all what can be done physically. George Will raises the bar for all of us verbally.

If few people understand the words that George Will uses, it only means we are a society of mental slackers who need to get off the couch, turn off the TV and open a dictionary.

The way George Will chooses his "big words" is done in the same way Michael Phelps chooses when to breathe, turn, kick, stroke, etc. i.e. by using extraordinary talent and expert skill honed from years of practice. Both choose the technique of their craft in a way that all others should learn from and model.

The only appropriate use of "few" in the discussion of George Will or Michael Phelps is in mentioning how few people are even close to their level and how few are qualified to criticize their style and choices.

P.S. Anyone with a college degree of any rank in any subject who does not understand most words George Will uses should feel many things -- embarassed, ashamed, alarmed, and short changed for having wasted years at a den of incompetency rather than an institution of higher learning.

But angry with George Will is NOT one of the feelings any college graduate should feel who does not find George Will's writing to be eminently lucid and the apogee of succinct poignancy.

You should immediately shred your degree and re-enroll in another college that awards degrees to those who demontrate college-level literacy.

mr. will and it appears some other 'conservative' journalists of 'higher education' are jumping ship, perhaps with the hope of being hired by the main stream media. It all depends on which side of their 'bread' the most 'butter' is spread.

Theodore Roosevelt Was A Fascist

Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were role models for Mussolini and Hitler. TR was a dangerous fascist who would have rivaled Mussolini had he been re-elected and consolidated power in the federal government as he wanted.

Read Jonah Goldberg's book "Liberal Fascism" for a good summary of TR's fascism.

No true conservative (classical liberal) would ever want to be compared to TR in anything except showing exceptional pertinacity in overcoming personal challenges.

Teddy came a lot closer to being a dictator than his cousin, FDR. Of course, neither of them hold a candle to America's Hitler-before-Hitler: Woodrow Wilson.

T.R. is
popular today because we only hear about the heroic things he was in the center of: Spanish-American War, Panama Canal, Great White Fleet, Trust-Busting, etc. One has to make an effort to learn of his darker side... and most Americans don't/won't make that effort, and his superficial/heroic legacy lives on.

All of that said, there is no denying that he was a great American; love him or hate him, he made the rest of the world sit up and take notice of a new/upstart world power.

A Proper Role Model
McCain suffers the apparent disadvantage of being experienced, with judgment and character. He is not for the collective republic, but one embracing individualism, independence and a minimum intrusion of government. His opponent is a polar opposite, inexperienced, with poor judgment in personal and political associations, with a character formed around terrorists and Marxists and other separationists. If you expect a Chicago politician to clean up government and a dysfunctional Congress, you will NOT find it neither in Obama, nor Biden. IF you look forward to continuing high taxes and more taxes, and the largest government you have ever seen, then Obama is your man. IF you want to see your 401k and other retirement account taxes to punish you for looking after your own retirement, then vote for the Pelosi/Obama/Biden team. If you want to see Americans who obey the law have their firearms taken away, then vote for Obama and Biden, for they will surely try to do it, if their voting records mean anything. IF you support the slippery slope slide into pure socialism, then Obama is your man. It is unfortunate that so many voters will be using emotion and a reflex-action to select their candidate and not the squishy material between their two ears. Our republic deserves better than that, and so do all Americans. Trying to tie McCain to Bush, an unpopular President is as difficult as trying to get the democrats to admit their role in the Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac debacle, where they share the vast majority of the blame, from President Carter forward to Reid. People following the issues have a better idea what is going on. McCain and Palin are the true agents of change that totally eluded Obama to this very day. A functional Congress and government is kind of scary and unusual, if you just think about it. A sharp turn to the left is NOT what our country needs, but a steady hand, reform and a backbone. Obama lacks all three, and McCain does not.

I would expect an opinion writer, especially one that practically carries the flag for the conservatives, would do a better job communicating. The object of the writing is to communicate with your audience. Having said that, I am well aware that he is the ultimate word smith, choosing his words (even his big ones) very carefully. However, I maintain that there is no reason to use big words when small ones will do just as fine...unless that reason is a selfish one. Only George knows that.

I usually agree with George Will and do appreciate his insights however, I have thought that McCain's association with Teddy Roosevelt was a good one. I have not read the book that Will refers to but I have read Edmund Morris' Pulitzer Prize winning book and its prequelon Roosevelt. From those I have found many positive similiarities between McCain and Teddy Roosevelt. I wish George Will had focused on more of the positive aspects.

What makes you think the economic failures of Obama/Pelosi/Reid will be blamed on Obama/Pelosi/Reid? Just as the MSM and the noisy Dems have succeeded in blaming this Freddie/Fannie fiasco and subsequent bailout on "the failed economic policies of the Bush administration," they might well succeed in convincing the politically un-attuned that all subsequent economic problems are still Bush's fault and that it will take many more Democrat administrations to finally rectify Bush's mess.

Add to that the impossibility of getting ANY Supreme Court nominees who see the Constitution as anything but "a living document," subject to the whims of current P.C. leanings and the new necessity of an all-powerful Big Government, and you have a near-perfect storm. McCain at least SAYS he will appoint strict-constructionist justices, though that will indeed be difficult if he ends up with a Dem Congress.

Regarding TR and Wilson, the fact that they were Fascists is what I was alluding to earlier; that they were two sides of the same coin i.e. TR was the militarist who never saw a war he didn't want to fight and Wilson was the Jesuit schoolmaster who wanted to drill the nation in preparation for such.

As to this book it sounds like some serious revisionist history. Attempting to reduce TR, a very complex man, into something very simple doesn't work. Many anecdotes applied by TR were to a particular circumstance, not a general situation. Do not confuse the two. Also there are times that you must have one cohesive policy for the national good. For instance, I would apply TR's quotes about hyphenated Americans as to a cohesive policy for a national good. I might add that those quotes were later reiterated by Woodrow Wilson. Ridiculous McCain Feingold does not apply. That law is aimed at helping politicians and not the country as a whole.

TR was a warmonger with a deficiency of respect for the Constitutional limitations of the federal government. Ditto McCain. To say so is no endorsement of socialist fruitcake Obama, as some comments have suggested must be Will's intent. It's just too bad we couldn't have ended up with a better choice.

I wonder if Will remains as enamored of Alexander Hamilton as he once was? Hamilton was a big-government advocate too. Madison, whom Will chooses to invoke now, developed more healthy skepticism of federal power as he went along.

In TR's defense
Yes politicaly TR was flawed, but I have to defend him on two accounts, he built a modern U.S Navy, anf he knew that the United States could in fact build the Panama Canal.
As far as war was concerned his son was killed in WW 1 and he lost its romanticism.

The Spanish American War was to be last war fought by volunteers etc. TR fell into that catagory and luck was with him. After all he was a cowboy.

While I did not hear McCain's "comment" his identification with TR, I no longer can trust George Will's analysis--and certainly not his opinion as to whether or not McCain's identification with TR is "shallow" or not.

Since George Will and David Brooks have both become "former Republicans", I can't trust them to give a Repbublican candidate a fair shake.

McCain did attend the Naval Academy and I believe that institution still does preach action over academic contemplation. I don't think Annapolis is turning out future Justices of the Court. Since I identified with Madison's concept of "conflict" after taking my college level constitutional law class, I can only suggest that perhaps McCain should bone up on the more intellectual and scholarly issues his Bo-Bo critics believe to be top priority.

After returning from church today,I watched the 'roundtable segment' of This Week. George Will,as usual was surrounded by the usual lefties.

I knew what the lefties would say, they never disappoint me. Four lefties and one moderate (G. Will). He is no moderate any longer. he has joined the left.The so-called elite.

He said not one negative word about the left. Lots of negatives against the right. I did not even read his piece today.

I have lost respect for his judgement. He has joined the enemy and the enemy is not us.

Restore, don't dismantle
Robyn, I share your view regarding Ayers and Obama's obviously close relationship to him in both relationship and philosophy. The fact that Ayers is not just free, but an educator (!!) and that so few seem bothered by it is a barometer of our times. Add to that Rev. Wright, ACORN, his campaign advisors who were key players in the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac fiasco, etc.

We are coming to grips with the full measure of our cultural bankruptcy - in entertainment, arts, government, press, institutions of "higher" learning and intellectual class. The direction of the herd has been driven by socialist-activists who devoted their time and energy to achieving their goals and it has been assisted by apathy from all sides. They have been successful because too many have rested on their laurels under the presumption that we had arrived at the intersection of limited government, national sovereignty and respect for individual liberty and that our position was secure without vigilant and active protection of it, from internal threats as much as external.

Those who love liberty need to wake up, stop facilitating their own demise, and make their voices heard. We'd all do well to ensure that all our choices in entertainment, education, and business reflect our values.

George Will is right in his column. McCain loves this country without fully understanding and standing for the founding principles that distinguish her to make her truly great...but, he has had plenty of company.

That said, I will still vote for a less than intellectual and sometimes awkward, but mostly great man who is devoted to preserving his not fully understood notion of America over an extremely well-educated and articulate man whose past reveals that he is devoted to fundamental change that will destroy her. Vote for McCain, then persist in making him understand what you were voting against.

It is easy enough to find issue with any political figure, be it in his personal or political life. Having started reading "The Forgotten Man" by Amity Shlaes, I am reeducating myself on our history. In the time of TR and then FDR, socialism was becoming a mainstream political position. WW and then FDR moved the country that way. McCain , with cap and trade policies, campaign finance reform, etc. nudges us that way but maintains some conservative values. Obama and other Democrats would run headlong in that direction.
We should be looking at our legislators to require them to return to the Constitution and start reducing the laws we have instead of increasing them. As with FDR, there was more legislation written in his first term that had been written since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

TR Was No Conservative
TR, along with Dewey, Wilson, and an entire generation of Protestant Reformers were the for-runners of what was dubbed Fascism. For a number of reasons, fascism has been branded a right wing anitdote to communism; this is far, very far from the truth. Yes, fascism or progressivism has been referred to as the third way (niether capitialistic nor socialisitic), but in the end, fascism depends upon a strong centralized state to achieve social ends.

Mussolini took his cue not from Europe, but from the US. He was a great admirerer of both Wilson and TR. Thier popularism was always elitist, and sought to remake the social order in thier own image. TR bullied private enterprise, totally endorsed eugenics (forced or theraputic abortions, sterilziation and contraception -especially for Blacks and East Europeans); TR was the first to expound a centralized education system run from DC; and TR also endorsed a federal income tax, and public/private "partnership" of industry (The Nazis would perfect this to a T. Think of Krupps and IG Farben).

Racism, popularism, socialism, eugenics, war socialism and a govermental overlordship of society were the legacies of TR. Wilson just finished a project that TR began. Actually the project continues today.

McCain Has No Idea Who He is
He is niether libertairan, nor is he a pure socialist. He admires "strong leaders", but he cannot abide by strong religious leaders. He is a populist and also an elitist.

Yes, McCain is much more desireable than Obama. But, a negative vote is not something to run on. McCain's first instincts were to go after conservatives such as Cox and "other Wall St Fatcats"; but he not so even mentions Fannie/Freddie and the Dems who supported these two corrupt institutions. McCain's silence is indicative of his indirect support of federalizing our mortgage markets. His certainly does not want to upset his freinds in the Senate.

McCain will lose this election, but not by much. Palin will do the dirty work, while McCain appears to be presidential (ie weak).

Back To Basics in All Things
What lead to this mess is that we have a government that has created a huge bureaucracy that spends and grows in size, expenditures, and power. Then politicians use the bureaucracy they create and use this power to create voting blocs. And, most all governmental agencies are involved in non-government business to begin with.

The legislature is supposed to be representing the interests of this country, and not special interests. The legislature is supposed to represent the genuine interests of it's citizens and not creating agencies and departments to create safe voting blocs.

The way that the democrats have guaranteed a steady voting bloc of deadbeats is that they promise ever more government spending on people who will not work, because they favor being paid to stay home. LBJ created the so-called Great Society Programs, that have now expanded exponentially into a trillion dollar expenditure of welfare programs in only 40 plus years. These programs have dumbed down the population to a point that we have high school graduates who cannot read and write. These programs have destroyed the work ethic of millions. These programs have created an Entitlement Menatlity that has no gratitude or respect for themselves, respect for others, or respect for resources. When you do not work for anything, you do not respect or appreciate what you have.
That is why Obama is so popular with deadbeats. He promises to take from those who produce and give even more to non-producers.

Wth this mentality, there will be no incentive for producers to produce, and eventually we all starve.

Victory Easily within McCain Grasp
My cold rational analysis of the polls, as an organization psychologist and pollster, indicates that McCain is down by 2-3 points after adjusting for even a modest Bradley Effect. Furthermore, there is a fear-driven, white middle class turnout multiplier dimension in revulsion/fear at Obama's radical socialist connections that is not being captured in the polls that could reduce the apparent Obama lead by another 3-4 points. Thus, it is very possible McCain is up by a couple points. Even if McCain were truly down by 5.5 points, that can be made up in the next 28 days; it is quite doable.

If my words fail to sway you, let me quote CLARENCE PAGE, noted black columnist and Obama supporter: "Obama has more reason than McCain to feel nervous about close polls. In fact, IF OBAMA FAILS TO SHOW A 6-point ADVANTAGE IN THE POLLS BY ELECTION DAY I EXPECT JOHN MC CAIN TO BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT."

A 75% McCain supporter turnout (even if it is based on fear and loathing for Obama) wins this election and wins it convincingly. Put the fear of Obama and his intent to engineer a socialist coup in everybody's whose ear you can bend. Do everything you can to turn out the McCain vote.

Nice revisionism! What an outstanding job Mr. Will does of taking one of the most complex individuals in U.S. history and then boiling him down to one skewed and myopic editorial view. Characterizing TR with your fringe and extreme interpretations of his essence is as deep as boiling Washington down to a mere slave owner. There is a lot of great historical and biographical work on TR out there. I advise and urge any and all to seek them out as TR had as much to do with America advancing on the world stage as any leader in our history. Those changes allowed America to not burst out of the seams and Constitution of the nation that had been founded little more than a century prior. As all men, he was as flawed with the same foibles and inconsistencies as say, Mr. Will on any given editorial week. That said, his views were complex and, in the non-Utube age, he often shot from the hip with his rhetoric. I am shocked to think that our resident baseball expert and quasi conservative friend does not think that conflict, better stated as trial, does not produce a better and more durable product in all things. From this article, I am now writing a full dissertation on the pacifist/socialist core of Mr. Will. Like him, I will use one source to confirm my arguments, unless I am counting myself as a source as Mr. Will does. Overturning the current way that business is done in DC is the answer to insure this never occurs again. The abolishment of bogus outfits such as Fannie and Freddie, The Welfare System, The IRS, and the U.S. Department of Education is a good place to start. Then, run every special interest and lobby group out of DC, and put our Congress back to work representing We, The Citizens of This Country.

This will never happen with another Liberal Democrat President. Electing McCain is a start, then we hold his feet to the fire, and demand some action.

The purpose of any political article should be to make the readers think!

Thinking, as some have already indicated, is a difficult thing to do nowadays. It is much easier to search out articles that reinforce our views than those which challenge us. Yet it is through this challenge that we grow.

I remain an admirer of TR. But as an admirer I must decide how far to take it. Should I accept his racist views (remember, he gave credit to black troops fighting at San Juan Hill UNTIL it came time to publish his book on the subject). And how do I justify TR falling in with the Progressive (aka Fascist) movement? Yet I have had to think through these- and other issues- to remain an admirer of TR. God gave me a brain, so I use it!

One final thought: it is entertaining to hear George Will called "a pacifist/socialist"!

I'm not sure Mr. Will is helping McCain a whole lot here. Sure, he says, McCain may have admitted to identifying with Teddy Roosevelt. And yes, Roosevelt and McCain may both be collectivists. But even so, McCain is not nearly as dangerous as Teddy because he is, as the French would say, l'incompetent in the cognitive realm. A man with no ideas cannot act on them.

Ironically, this does provide some small measure of comfort to me. It falls short of a compelling argument to vote for McCain--McCain would have to make a committed stand for laissez-faire backed with a specific plan in the face of howling opposition to sway me at this point--but I have a certain respect for its logic. I am feeling some solidarity with Mr. Will right now.

Affirmative action cannot create sameness. You can either afford a loan or you cannot. The very idea that the Federal Government has become a Bureaucratic Blackmail Machine is totally pathetic.

Affirmative action in any action is just wrong. Nobody should be admitted to a universtity, for example, if they are not prepared to do so and do not qualify, and admitting students to colleges and universities based on skin color, gender or any other criteria, cheapens the education, and hurts the country. Nobody cares what race you are. They care whether or not you Meet Minimum Standards.

This type Social Engineering has lead to a crisis in this country. Affirmative Action has run amok. That is what lead to this Financial Disaster. That is what has destroyed the credibility of our public schools. That is what has destroyed our universities.

And I mean Nobody, should get into a college or universtity unless he or she can prove they are qualified with SAT scores, ACT scores, and have the academic and other criteria demonstrated in their high school experience. Nobody should get a loan unless he or she has met the minimum standards of: Have You Got A Job? What Is Your Annual Income? What is Your Credit History. Then, based on this, it is determined how much you can reasonably borrow and expect to be able to pay back.
