Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This week's column is an open letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,

Last week, in the presence of Dutch dignitaries visiting New York City to mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's remarkable first voyage on behalf of the Dutch East India Co. to "Nieu Amsterdam" (New York), you spoke of the need to safeguard freedom of expression. "Of course, I do not appreciate everything I hear," you said, according to a translated report from the Amsterdam newspaper De Telegraaf. "But when you start restricting that, you step on a slippery slope. Before you know it, you can no longer say what you want."

Congratulations, Mr. Mayor. With those words, you have became the first and only public official in the United States to express support, at least in principal, for Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, leader of the Dutch Freedom Party (PVV). Wilders, at the unexpected order of a Dutch appeals court, now faces criminal prosecution for exercising his freedom of expression about Islam. As the headline over your remarks in Amsterdam's De Telegraaf puts it, "Bloomberg helps Rutte and Wilders" -- Rutte being Mark Rutte, a second Dutch parliamentarian (and, in fact, Wilders opponent) who has come out against Wilders' prosecution.

This is either big stuff, Mr. Mayor, or I am grasping at straws. Maybe both. The fact is, an unnaturally incurious and stony international silence has met the outrageous Dutch decision to bring a duly-elected leader before a tribunal of judges for what he has said, written and expressed about Islam -- for committing, according to postmodern parlance, "hate speech."

Such a term is postmodern, but the crime it describes is premodern, a violation, in non-Western eyes, of the medieval Islamic prohibition against any and all criticism of Islam. Thus, this trial of the 21st century will turn on the will of an advanced, secular Western state to force one of its citizens to accept a fossilized, sectarian, non-Western taboo. That this citizen is Holland's leading proponent of advanced, secular and Western liberties, starting with freedom of speech, adds a circular irony to the state's shameful action. And no one, save a handful of mainly anti-jihad writers, seems to care.

That is, not only public officials but also media are ignoring this story about the erosion of freedom of speech in the West. And that goes for America's talk radio and cable kings, some of whom are headquartered in New York City. From Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity to Mark Levin: Even as these men, among other broadcasters, alternately bristle and rail at the likelihood that they themselves may be targeted by First Amendment-flouting "hate-speech" controls in our brave, new Obama world, they fail not only to uphold Wilders' right to free speech, they fail to notice the threat to it.

All of which is why your statement, Mr. Mayor, in front of your Dutch visitors about the slippery slope of speech restrictions -- "Before you know it, you can no longer say what you want" -- sounded like a declaration of independence from the Sharia-serving speech codes that the West increasingly adopts to regulate expression and debate.

And that includes New York. As you may know, over at the United Nations in December, the United States (and the Netherlands, for that matter) voted against a resolution introduced on behalf of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to promote a Sharia-serving speech code. Then again, you may not know. There were no news stories in the local press -- Times, Post or Daily News. Is this more evidence of the pattern of Western silence on Sharia-serving speech codes generally? Hard to say.

Anyway, the resolution, which prohibits the "defamation" of religion, passed 86 to 53 with 42 abstentions. A dangerous gag on speech even in ecumenical theory, the resolution mentions only Islam, and the "defamation" it describes includes any linkage between Islam and terrorism.

It was left to the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations to point out that the resolution objects to efforts "pursued by extremist organizations and groups aimed ... at incitement to religious hatred," but omits any mention, for example, of what he called "the toxic religious incitement and indoctrination of Palestinian children, and the brutal persecution of Christians in Gaza," adding: "Where is the rejection of the Hamas Covenant which states: `No war takes place anywhere in the world without the Jews behind the scenes having a hand in it. ... Whenever they fan the flames of war, Allah will extinguish them.'"

Such rejection is nowhere. It is not "defamation of religion" the U.N. resolution prohibits, it is defamation -- read: criticism -- of Islam. As such, the resolution is an instrument of Sharia. But hardly anyone takes note.

Certainly, the General Assembly of the United Nations doesn't represent New York City. Still, I would like to draw your attention to a recent incident that took place last month as you dined inside the Marriott Marquis hotel on Broadway, a guest at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee dinner.

You may know from a brief New York Post account that 10 "pro-Gaza" demonstrators were arrested for chaining themselves to the hotel. What you probably don't know is that a New York Post photographer was prevented from taking pictures of the demonstration by "pro-Gaza" protestors. Mr. Mayor, you should watch the video (by the blogger VigilantSquirrelBrigade) of the photographer being harassed and, at one point, bashed over the head with placards by the demonstrators. (To find the video, Google: "Pro Gaza Rally Assaults Photographer.") Worse, you should watch the photographer's treatment at the hands of apathetic, unresponsive New York City police who ignored his plight. In failing to act, in looking the other way (literally), the NYPD not only ceded control of Broadway to the mob, it also failed, miserably, to protect freedom of speech in New York.

A small thing? Clearly, this is a blip next to the Dutch case against Wilders' freedom of speech, or the U.N. vote against freedom of speech. But it is highly significant nonetheless, and something you, as mayor, should know about so you can ensure freedom is better protected on your streets. A little intimidation here, a little restriction there, and there's your slippery slope. All of which is to say, Mr. Mayor, it's one thing to declare that the slippery slope exists; it's another to figure out what to do when we are already on one.

Good points, I thought
That slippery slope is named apply, and if he's not careful, he'll send NY down that slope.

Freedom to incite hatred?
Surely Diana you know the difference between freedom of expression and freedom to incite hatred.

This is what the Amsterdam court of appeal said:

"The judges said they had weighed Wilders' anti-Islam rhetoric against his right to free speech and ruled he had gone beyond even the normal leeway granted to politicians."

"The court ruled that it is in the public interest to prosecute Wilders because, in a democratic legal system, a clear line must be drawn between hate speech and public debate."

(Spiegel Online, Jan 21, 2009)

So Diana have you joined the army of Islamophobes crusading against the "new enemy"?

This is what the Right does best - "unearthing" the next enemy - Commies, Gays, Blacks, Hispanics ...

All decent folk should be condemning Geert Wilders and his racist diatribes instead of promoting and supporting his hateful ideology.

Free Speech in now Hate Speech
Now I see the connection. Under liberalism, free speech is now hate speech. I think Ralph in Florida needs to be educated about the meaning of free speech, at least the old fashioned American kind as intended by our Founding Fathers.

Free Speech / Hate Speech
Ralph:

"Hate speech" is a nonsense term used by those who wish to stifle comments or debate with which they disagree. It is easier to use that term than it is to engage in an objective refutation. The constitution of the USA does NOT guarantee us freedom from being offended; it does, however grant us the freedom to offend. I'm sorry if you cannot deal with that concept.

Question: Who gets to decide what speech is "too offensive," or where the line exists between public debate and "hate speech?" You? Me? (Sorry, surely not me as a "conservative.") The folks down the street? Anybody? Who? You cannot answer that question because any answer will be offensive to someone.

FREEDOM ON SPEECH MARCH ON MALL
OK BOYS AND GIRLS,

HERE IT IS:

LET'S START SOME PROBLEMS FOR THE D.C. POLICE AND POLITICIANS.

LET'S MARCH ON WASHINGTON TO FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

PICTURE THIS:

CIA OPERATIVES TRYING TO PREVENT ISLAMIC TERRORIST FROM BOMBING US.

DEMOCRATIC POLITICIANS HAVING TO SUPPORT OUR BASIC DEMANDS FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR TURN THEIR BACKS ON MILLIONS OF PEOPLE RIGHT IN THIER FACES.

OBAMA MORONS CREATING HAVOC WITH ANTI-FREEDOM OF SPEECH COUNTER MARCHES.

SOUND LIKE FUN?

LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYONE INTERESTED FOR THIS SUMMMER.

LET'S SEE IF ANY DEMOCRATS OR "MODERATE REPUBLICANS" WILL MAKE THE HARD DECISION: SUPPORT OR DENY FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

IT COULD MAKE THINGS HOT FOR A LOT OF PHONIES, BELIEVE ME.

ROWDY BOOTS

Wow
Is this Ralph character for real? Surely, he's some liberal troll looking to ignite a fuss. Nobody could be that stupid.

On the other hand, Obama got elected president. There really are a lot of stupid people out there.

YO, RALPH
YO, RALPH,

THE SUN IS GETTING TO YOU MAN.

BY YOUR LOGIC, YOU ARE THE FIRST TO BE PROSECUTED FOR VIOLATIONS OF FREE SPEECH--IDIOTIC CODE VIOLATION #6655443322110000000000000000000

OR THERE ABOUTS...

Mike & The Groundhog
Bloomberg stuck his hand in the groundhog hutch and got it bitten. He probably voted for 'the one',also.

Stupid
Why are the people in the United States so stupid as to be duped by Leftists who strive constantly to destroy the nation? The very term 'hate speech' is not only moronic, it is total BS. It merely means that one has uttered something which Leftists do not want to hear. For my part, I think that Leftists can either close their ears or they can go about their business and leave everyone else alone. And why are we getting involved in the business of other nations again? If the Europeans were stupid enough to let a bunch of blood-thirsty Muslims move into their countries and start dictating, they deserve whatever they get. There is a reason for restricting immigration to those who are desirable. The Europeans are now dealing with the result of their liberal, open borders policies so they can either deport the Muslims or become their victims. This might be an appropriate time for American citizens to pause and consider this foolishness the left calls 'diversity' and 'tolerance.' Muslims are neither diverse nor are they tolerant, and we do not need to be either. Protecting one's own interests is how sane people survive. Perhaps Muslims should remain in predominantly Muslim countries where their mores are the norm and we should leave them alone. They should also leave us alone. Separate but equal is good.

Diana

Your commentary seems well thought out. It displays the ridiculous measures being taken, around the world, in an effort to promote Islam.

What is the Western world so afraid of?

I suggest you send your commentary to Hizhoner the Mayor, because what he said was posturing for media, not his philosophy; as is proven by his record to suppress Free Speech.

Hate speech?
I hate the Klan and everything they stand for.'
But they do have the right to spew their venom during rallies and (if they have the skill) to publish on the internet. Disgusting as their comments may be, they are still protected by the Constitution. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

All I have to do is ignore and ridicule them.

Bloomie is a DICTATOR IN TRAINING!
The PUBLIC in overwhelming numbers VOTED for term limits in NYC but His Imperial Majesty is not having any of THAT from the peons. The City Council (one of the largest collections of genuine crackpots and socialists this side of Beijing) voted to rescind the WILL OF THE PEOPLE! So "feh on us".

THIS is why I wish Fred Thompson would make good on his threat. He has a legal residence here and, at least if you're a Democrat, that allows him to run for Mayor. The FIRST thing on his agenda is to throw open all the records of elites with carry permits and then loosen up the process for law-abiding commoners.

Don't even get me started on his lifestyle pogroms.

Speech codes
Speech codes have no place in free society. The restriction of "hate speech" is merely a restriction on unpopular points of view. Yes, some people are wrong when they open their mouths, some people say, without thinking, things that offend, others put great thought into offending. Many of those people offend me, but they have a right to say it, and I have a right to (a) ignore them or (b) point out their stupidity.

When speech can be regulated, all freedom is lost.

Rowdy - Free Speech March on Washington
Do it in the spring. The weather's better. Make it coincide with the Cherry Blossoms in early April if you want the greatest effect.

Ban Islam
Its simple, just ban Islam in the West, keep it bottled up in their respective litter boxes. Until Christians, Jews, Hindu's, Buddists, etc. can freely evanglize and worship in Muslim lands, there should be no reciprocity in the West or non-Muslim countries. Phooey on cowards who kowtow to Islam.

Ms. West
Thank you. I agree with all your points. However, I don't recall you also saying anything to condemn laws in too many self-styled liberal democracies to fine and even jail Holocaust "deniers."
Here, prescisely the same tools, legal theories, and rationalizations are being used to silence speech. This "slippery slope" then leads directly to the policies you discuss. As we write this, German prosecutors are threatening to jail the British bishop recently reinstated by Pope Benedict for his holocaust remarks.
Will you please also condemn this governmental speech supression, which is an enabler for the issues you describe above?

RALPH
And who wouldn't love to have courts in charge of regulating our speech? Ralph, you're a fake.

Subject - ROWDY
When President Obama said during his presidential campaign " these guys take pride in their ignorance" he must have been talking about guys like you.

Get a dictionary bro and learn how to use it.

For starters look up the word "hate".

BTW the Caps Lock key is on the left of the keyboard.

Subject RW
Actually I'd love to have the Courts intervene.

After 8 years of watching Bush and his neocon hoodlums trash the constitution the Courts are probably the only thing that stood between America and Fascism.

Read up on the concept of the "Separation of Powers".

I want Mayor Bloomberg
to step down. He is a bored rich guy who is ruining NYC with his grandiose schemes, much like Pres. Zero.

Subject Jaybird
You obviously know absolutely nothing about Geert Wilders and his hate ideology.

But then again maybe you don't really care - like President Obama said you guys "take pride in your ignorance".

BTW that's President Obama to you!

Here's what TV Producer Harry de Winter, President of the board of the foundation Een Ander Joods Geluid [Another Jewish Voice], said about Wilders' work:

“If Wilders had said the same thing about Jews (and the Old Testament) as he does about Muslims (and the Koran), he would have been ostracized a long time ago and accused of anti-Semitism.”

March 24, 2008

Yup, say anything against the Jews and its anti-Semitic and hate speech but anything goes against the Muslims, the Latinos, gays, blacks ...

RALPH
"Actually I'd love to have the Courts intervene"

OK -- I find a judge somewhere in the US who finds your hateful hatred hatefully espouses "hate speech" toward conservatives as a group. You are duly prosecuted for your crimes.
Hey, I can see why you libbies get a stiffie over things like this! A chance to punish all those no-good conservatives who make you look like losers and whiners.

Scopes II
Remember the tidbit from History of the Scopes Monkey Trial, how it was turned on its' head in the media by the defendent turning it into a circus?

Mark Steyn almost succeeeded in getting the Islamists' "human rights" complaint into Court, where he, too, would have turned it into a circus worthy OJ and his Dream Team in Judge Ito's courtroom... And on TV screens around the world.

If the Dutch case against Geert Wilders and Fitna goes to court, he just may go "Balls Up" and turn it into a show trial circus, especially if it's televised.

But, unlike OJ when they were ready in Watts to riot if he was found guilty, the riots will be in Islamabad (and maybe Londonistan) if Wilders is found innocent.

Pass the popcorn, please!

Yeah, Um, Ralph
Are you prepared to have leftist diatribes about conservatives subject to 'hate' speech? Remember all the "Bush" comments by certain 'entertainers'? Those are pretty crass and hateful. Should that be subject to hate speech?

But that question leads me to my point: "hate" as used in such situations is a totally subjective idea. It cannot with any rational clarity be applied equally or consistently. Each of us has a different level of tolerance of such issues, and saying something is hateful under the law cannot rid that truth.

Further, and a truncated argument here, is that what you end up with under hate speech laws is not a lower amount of hate but a superficial "niceness" towards all. Restricting the speech will not make the hate go away.

The only way for the hate to disapper is to have a change of heart, and that cannot be legislated, right?

Circus trials
Hmmm, circus trials involving monkeys, OJ, Jacko, & Islam...

Does one see an emerging pattern here?!

It's Gotta Happen!!
Somebody, Somewhere, HAS to take this STUPID Hate Speech thing to court!!I can't conceive of how anyone who has bought or listened to most
Ganstra Rap could, with a straight face, even consider citing anyone for "Hate Speech"
I will pledge, right now, to donate the first 1000 $ in establishing a Defense Fund for anyone who goes about it a SERIOUS, PROFESSIONAL manner!! What say the *rest of U*?

Ralph Reply #19
Read up on the concept of the "Separation of Powers".

Perhaps you should. The constitution provides that legislatures make laws and judges use laws to facilitate justice, or interpret laws in light of the US constitution.

Why, then, do we have so many "liberal" judges re-interpreting the constitution in light of their own personal prejudices, "feelings," and, in a few absurd cases, "international law" in order to legislate (in effect, create new law) from the bench.

I really, really wish that liberals WOULD read and understand separation of powers.

Collins, Specter & Snowe just SOLD OUT..

BREAKING NEWS:

Senators Collins, Specter & Snowe just sold the United States out. Calling them "RINOs" is an insult to RINOs.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D966EEQ80&show_arti cle=1

WASHINGTON (AP) - With job losses soaring nationwide, Senate Democrats reached agreement with KEY REPUBLICANS Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's plan for combatting the worst recession in decades. "The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said SEN. SUSAN COLLINS of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill.

Officials put the cost of the measure at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined. No details were immediately available, and there appeared to be some confusion even among senators about the price tag as floor debate continued late into the night.

The agreement capped a tense day of backroom negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader HARRY REID, joined by White House chief of staff RAHM EMANUEL, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.

In addition to COLLINS, Sen. ARLEN SPECTER, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill. Sen. OLYMPIA SNOWE, R-Maine, remained uncommitted." (cap emphasis mine)

Thanks to these three SELL-OUTS (Collins, Specter and Snowe), a few years from now, our country will be forced to default on its debt obligations.

That’ll be after hyper-inflation has destroyed the value of our currency.

These 3 Traitors have enabled the Leftocrats to BORROW nearly a TRILLION DOLLARS, and flush it down the toilet on wasteful pet pork projects.

A trillion dollars.

That’s 1,000,000,000,000.00

If any of these three American Traitors (Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe) happen to be YOUR Senator, please, FIRE THEM.

Conservative talk radio falls short
Diana West wrote: "Not only public officials but also media are ignoring this story about the erosion of freedom of speech in the West. And that goes for America's talk radio and cable kings, some of whom are headquartered in New York City. From Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity to Mark Levin..."

As a conservative, I am also very disappointed with conservative talk radio for not covering this outrageous infringement of speech. I recommend Robert Spencer's "Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America Without Guns or Bombs." Rush Limbaugh continues to parrot George W. Bush's politically correct "war on terrorism." I've gotten to the point where I hardly listen to these nationally syndicated talk shows.

You wrote: “If Wilders had said the same thing about Jews (and the Old Testament) as he does about Muslims (and the Koran), he would have been ostracized a long time ago and accused of anti-Semitism.”

I am a Jew. I welcome legitimate criticsm of my faith. Have at it. The point is, unlike the Qur'an, no where in the Torah or the prophets does it command Jews to slay "unbelievers" (or infidels) only because they (you) do not believe YHWH is God and Moses is His true prophet as is the case with Islam, Allah and the prophet Muhammad. Muhammad commanded faithful Muslims to kill unbelievers "wherever you find them and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)...." etc.

Consequently, Osama bin Laden is a faithful Muslim who lives by the commandments of Allah and his prophet.
