Will Sarah Palin make a run at the GOP Nomination in 2012?

DENVER -- There are two Democratic National Conventions here in Denver.

The first one is the official convention, which has a sole purpose: to sell Barack Obama, not as a different kind of Democrat, but as a red-white-and blue everyman. Mr. Middle America.

The speakers Monday night downplayed the accomplishments and uniqueness of Barack and Michelle Obama by highlighting what makes them like an average family. Michelle Obama's brother, Craig Robinson, introduced his sister as a woman who wouldn't be on the campaign trail if her mother couldn't watch the two daughters.

For her part, Michelle Obama told the convention that, "what struck me when I first met Barack was, that even though he had this funny name, and even though he had grown up all the way across the continent in Hawaii, his family was so much like mine." Which is ludicrous -- not so much because he was raised by a white mother and white grandparents, but because he grew up acutely aware that his father had abandoned him.

Read Joshua Green's piece in September's "The Atlantic" on the strategies debated by advisers to Hillary Rodham Clinton and you understand this convention. As Clinton pollster/guru Mark Penn argued, Obama is "unelectable" because of his "lack of American roots."

"Every speech should contain the line you were born in the middle of America to the middle class in the middle of the last century," Penn told Clinton in a strategy memo. Team Obama has ripped a page from that strategy, and you hear it echo wherever you go. At this convention, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., announced, "Illinois is America."

In a similar vein, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters, "Joe Biden is the all-American boy." Pay attention, heartland: Democrats want you to know that they are Middle America, not that they know what is best for Middle America.

This is a convention of progress: It shows an America in which black and white Americans don't live in different worlds, and share the same values. Continued...

When I wrote it, I was thinking only of the unearthing of the old (but still redolent) dirt on Hillary and her disgusting attempts at obfuscation. But your post reminded me that some of her recent photos, depending on the light I guess, show her premature aging under even the best makeup money can buy. I saw one photo of her without the makeup. Tremendous, the work her inner rage and mounting bile is doing on her. We needn't worry about her in 2012.

Suggestions for GOP convention
For the GOP convention, I would like to see the following - and would not be surprised to see them - as additional keynote speakers: McCain’s vice president (for obvious reasons), Pres. George W. Bush, Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, Colin Powell, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, and other former Rep. presidential contenders such as Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and/or Fred Thompson. Some other individuals to consider as speakers or participants: Cindy McCain and their children; McCain’s sons who are currently serving in the military; Sen. Joe Lieberman; Dr. James and/or Shirley Dobson or another high profile Evangelical leader; and, a Vietnam war veteran, preferably one who served alongside McCain. I would also like to see a biography similar to the one featured about Obama, though it would have more substance since McCain has had more life experience and a more compelling life story! The message should focus on McCain’s long history of public service and experience, his conservative Republican or traditional American values while remaining a “maverick,” his qualifications to be commander-in-chief and his ability to get things done while working with both sides of the political aisle. When Bush or Giuliani get on stage, I hope they emphasizes the fact that this nation has remained safe from another major terrorist attack since 9/11 (esp. with anniversary coming up) - and that McCain is the best candidate to pass on that monumental task of protecting this country.
