Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The Great Election of 2008 is over. Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

Now is the time to ask what this election was about.

Here’s what this election was (set ital) not (end ital) about: Barack Obama. It was not about his record: He didn’t have one. It was not about his views, which are radical in the extreme. It was not about his associations: Americans didn’t care about Wright, Ayers, or Khalidi. The media didn’t want Americans to know about Obama. Obama didn’t want Americans to know about Obama. And Americans didn’t want to know about Obama.

This election was not about John McCain. No one cared about McCain, except the liberal media that nominated him president after one win in New Hampshire.

This election was not about President George W. Bush. Bush was used as a punching bag by both sides -- and by election time, he was completely irrelevant.

And this election was certainly not about the issues. In the general election, Barack Obama campaigned as a centrist, titularly abandoning his more extreme positions to do so. He lied about his policies. And no one cared.

This election was about one thing and one thing only: Americans’ puerile need for unity through self-congratulatory, cathartic membership in a broad, transformative political movement.

For eight years, Americans have been engaged in hostile politics. And after eight years, Americans were sick of it.

That isn’t to America’s credit. Hostile politics -- hard-fought political conflict over the issues that matter -- is not a bad thing. It is precisely the sort of messy republicanism the founders embraced. Early elections were replete with mudslinging, character assassination, brawls and scandals. They were also replete with some of the most substantive debate on policy ever put before mankind.

Apparently, we’re no longer interested in the dirty business of politics. We’d rather feel ourselves part of a high-minded movement. Not the sort of movement that espouses particular policies -- not the antiwar movement, or the pro-life movement -- those movements are too divisive. We want to be part of a movement that is solely about us.

Barack Obama was the vessel for that movement. He was an utter cipher. But he embodied the need of the American public for unity by hearkening back to the ultimate unifying feature of American life: third-grade slogans. He spouted Hope and Change. He told us, “We’re All Americans.” He told us, “Yes, We Can.”

From any other politician, it would be ridiculous drivel. From a black candidate, it was inspiring. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson didn’t talk like that -- they spoke the language of division. Because Obama spoke the language of unity, he had to be a moderate. So went our logic.

Barack Obama had us from the moment he said, “Hope.” In that moment, Obama accomplished two simultaneous transformations. First, he transformed himself into a moderate. Second, he transformed himself into a messianic figure, the object of our longing: the physical embodiment of America’s progression beyond racial conflict. If America wanted to move beyond conflict, what better way than to embrace a candidate who could end all racial conflict?

And the Obama campaign subtly played on this theme. They implied that if we voted against him, we were engaging in racial hatred; some supporters even implied America would undergo a race war if he lost. That’s the last thing we wanted.

We wanted to feel good again. That is what the Great Election of 2008 was about. It was about Americans’ desire to feel a part of Something Larger. To do something together, as Americans. In today’s day and age, that Something Larger cannot be the America Ronald Reagan preached about -- the left has attacked that America as racist, sexist, and selfish. That Something Larger had to be an individual who could provide us with the feeling of unity.

Barack Obama told us that we could do Something Larger simply by voting for him. When he said, “Yes We Can,” and we followed by screaming it, chanting it, shouting his name in unison, we were Doing Something Larger. We were uniting.

America has always recognized that unity for its own sake is useless at best and dangerous at worst. Unifying behind a mysterious charismatic figure promising transformational change may make us feel good, but it is a betrayal of the open and honest governmental debate our Founding Fathers sought and so many Americans have fought and died to preserve.

Americans think they grew up during Election 2008. They think they moved beyond the past. In one way they did. In another, more important way, they regressed dramatically -- to a time before politics mattered. In the next four years, there will be plenty of growing up to do.

pathetic
Conservatives seem determined to show that 2008 will be just the beginning. Could there be a more facile simplistic account of the election that Shapiro's above.

Obama was a cipher unless one went to his website and read the more detailed than usual position papers there or listened to him talk beyond the soundbytes that fit the evening news.

Of course this was a repudiation of Bush. McCain tried to distance himself from Bush but not in any substantive way.

Of course this was an acceptance of Obama. People prefered his policies over McCain's on most major issues.

The Shapiro response can be summed up as "Waaah, we lost that means there must be wrong with everyone who voted against my side. Waaah."

The Shapiro response
is that we really don't know Obama and his leftist illuminati ideals. But we will find out. Believe you me, we'll find out soon enough. And it won't be pretty.

Sum of the Election
Excellent historical perspective.

Well said, Ben
I hope to hear you speak at the SVFRC on Nov. 18. I'm a native too!

Anyway, brilliant analysis.

Silly...silly...man
This is exactly why the GOP just got handed its' hat.

As was repeated stated during the debates, there was little light of day between the Democratic candidates in terms of policy. Iraq, alternative energy over drilling, the Bush tax cuts, abortion rights, the Supreme Court, on down the line we knew precisely where Obama stood.

The fact that he was a force of nature with a simple positive message and history making to boot was just icing on the cake.

It also didn't hurt that Obama ran the most brilliant campaign in recent history.

Why?
This is interesting. and it is probably a result of our immigration policy. We should declare a moratorium and let the magic melting pot work. We have a lot of foreign born who don't know much of that history, and this election loked too much like South American politics for my taste. Hugo Chavez liked it, though.

best analysis I have seen yet
Sobering. Incisive.

Darice and Lon
The joke's on you! Or were you too drunk on kool-aid to hear your Messiah backpeddal like crazy last night on his glorious promises?! You've been punk'ed! Have a nice life!

Woe unto you
If what Lon says is true, than whatever happens it will fall on the heads of you who thought Obama's "policies" were better.

But you are correct in one thing, the Dems did run a more slick campaign. No honesty involved but a beautifully slick job.

And to answer your question, Yes. There is a more facile, simplistic account of the election, yours!

This wasn't an acceptance of Obama, this was the OJ Simpson factor. Reverse racism, down to the bloody core of it. Not many people could articulate on why they like Obama, other than that he's black and that he promised them money.
Grow up.

Last
sentence, yep, you are correct there is something very wrong with those who voted for this ZerO. So infantile that silly words make you swoon, and so uneducated in American history, and civics you bought the lie from
a cold, calculating liar who has told you nothing about himself..not even if he's legally entitled by birth to become the 44th prez.
And those who voted for him will one day answer to a Higher Authority for aiding and abetting the torture and butchery of 50 plus million babies, many of them black victims of genocide.
I wonder why the Revs Jackson and Sharpton; and
our precious Oprah havent shed tears for those black murdered babies like they shed them for their god.

What a Country!
Today's USA is amazing. A guy that could not get a security clearance to be a janitor at the White House will be occupying it! As a former federal employee that conducted background investigations for security clearances, I can assure you that failure to provide a birth certificate and access to college records alone would disqualify an applicant. Add the lifelong alliances with anti-American radicals and a thin list of accomplishments and you go from applicant to suspect.

Congratulations are in order to the Obama campaign for their flawless execution in deceiving the American sheeple. And a big "THANKS" to the MSM for aiding and abetting. We all better voice our dissent as much as possible now before the National Security Force forms and silences dissenters!

Tea Party
There's also something very odd about a group of people who rally behind a candidate who actually lost the popular vote then refuse to support who won by 4 million popular votes and an electoral vote landslide.

What's the word in Shapiro's title. Oh that's right...childish.

liberal geniuses
i find it interesting that in general, libs have to resort to name calling. Their defense of Obama consists of saying that, or saying "read his detailed position papers." Hmm, I have read them, and when they do take a position, there is certain to be an instance or two where Obama directly contradicts them. So, by virtue of the fact that the man will say whatever is convenient at the time, he is a cipher, ready to change his slate at a momnent's notice. Shapiro is spot-on in his analysis; the American public was giddy with its own self-importance at creating a historic moment. What is truly disturbing, though, is how this man and his cohorts bullied (texas caucuses) lied (95% of taxpayers will get a tax cut? Really?) and covered up (Can you say LA Times and the other media whores)in order to get elected. I'm not a fan of Mccain, but Obama would do anything to win. He reminds me of some other Chicagoan of yore . . . Al . . . Al . . . if just one lib out there had one tenth of Shapiro's brains, there might be hope for this country.

The Tyranny of Nice
I borrow that title from Mark Steyn. Mr. Shapiro makes an excellent point - politics is often ugly mudslinging because it forces open discussion of hot issues and divisions. Like a couple that needs to solve their issues, brushing them under the carpet decides and solves nothing.

"Nice" politics betrays that honesty.

And yes, Obama is that empty vessel, that blank slate upon which so many millions have cast their "hope" and aspirations - few, if any, he has any likelihood of fulfilling.

race war
Oh, by the way, the claims of a race war were many. The latest was just before the election in the LA Times by Susan Estrich. Remember her? She ran the show for Michael Dukakis.

Burt
"Congratulations are in order to the Obama campaign for their flawless execution in deceiving the American sheeple. And a big "THANKS" to the MSM for aiding and abetting. We all better voice our dissent as much as possible now before the National Security Force forms and silences dissenters!"

Burt, you couldn't have said it better. This scenario seems almost impossible except perhaps in a Tom Clancy novel.

I think this country is going to pay dearly for electing this glib tongued lying fraud. The forces aligned against us couldn't have hoped for a better outcome.

Shapiro's right - many if not most voted, not for what might be in the country's best interest, but for what made them feel good; for what assuaged their liberal imposed sense of guilt.

Well, when B. Hussein denudes our defenses, destroys our economy, ravages and mocks our culture and opens the gates to the marauding international hordes and domestic parasites, they'll realize they made a bad mistake when they substituted emotion for reasoned judgment in this election.

Bill, None, And other minions
None, may I remind you, My candidate won. I think the joke may be on you and anyone else who would focus on fear tactics (Rezco, Wright, Ayers, manufactured allegations of socialism, etc.) when the economy is tanking, we're fighting an unpopular war, and people are losing their pensions and homes. Though you may not be laughing the next eight years, the joke is definitely on you.

Bill, I'm very familiar with Susan Estrich. My first inclination was to call you a liar concerning her alluding to a race war. But I'll be practical. I'll give you an opportunity to cite the excerpt from her column that lead you to that conclusion. After you can't provide one, I'll then call you a liar.

OLBERMANN ROCKS

We
Are the ones WE have been waiting for. And now WE are here. What do WE do now?

Top Secret
BHO gets his (yes, lower case "his")Top Secret briefing tomorrow. What will the messiah (again, lower case) think then? I'd love to be the fly on the wall when reality smacks someone upside the head and really sinks in.

To OLBERMANN ROCKS
The allegations of socialism concerning Obama are not mere allegations but fact. He seeks out those he agrees with - - - and the socialists & communists who have supported him through the years agree with him. Just talk to some of the people in Chicago who know him. Also Obama went to Kenya to try and get Odinga elected. Odinga is a known communist. The only thing we need to "fear" is a comrade Obama!

Vicky

Obama's Coming, Certain, Deadly Failure
Obama ran on mantras of Change and Hope. He promised more handouts and concessions to his constituency - blacks, Hispanics, single women, Muslims, leftists, people too young to know better and those who vote for Democrats no matter who they are.
Falsely and negatively Obama campaigned against Bush saying McCain (McSame)/Palin would be more years of the same, failed policies.
Revealing as he did by picking Dolt Biden we see in Obama's first act proof of his lies - wanting Rahm Emanuel as WH Chief of Staff. Emanuel is not Change. He is a step back to more years of the Clintons' failed policies who Emanuel served.
Bush succeeded in the most important policy - taking the battles to Afghanistan and Iraq in the world war Islamic jihadists started in the 1970s, 30 or so years, 7 Presidencies ago. Bush took the war to them on their turf and away from the U.S. and other U.S. targets in other places. The policy has succeeded, Obama admitted finally in the O'Reilly interview, beyond Obama's expectation.
Clinton dithered in response to the many attacks by the jihadists on his watch, like the first bombing of the WTC. Clinton's dithering encouraged the jihadists to 911. So that date that should have lived in infamy like Pearl Harbor of WWII is clearly a Clinton legacy of his weak actions and inaction.
In his stupidity Biden has promised Obama will be tested. Biden even said it will appear we are responding in wrong ways. Given Obama's at best Socialist, Communist, Black Separatist, terrorist and Muslim-influence to which he admits and his steps already back to more of the same with Biden and Emanuel it is certain Obama and Biden will respond in wrong ways for the U.S. and we the people.
The latter include the seduced Obamaniacs who elected this pair to the offices of President and VP.

Fantastic Column!
Thank you, Ben!

Keep 'em coming!

Excellent column!
You are so right Mr.Shapiro! Voting Obama as president was a result of a blind mass movement which voted for an image not for a real person and it was a supreme act of immature and juvenile impulsiveness and there is not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that no matter what the media would do to cover up the dire consequences of this decision from the people they will very soon feel it with their own flesh and bone and will wake up and ask themselves : "What possessed us on 11/4/08!!?" When people rally behind a mere man for his own sake and not for the sake of a clear and great idea that he holds as a principle they leave themselves open to become the victims of a cult of personality which in the end concludes in a rude awakening once the man they so worshiped blindly and without any logical and coherent reason reveals his true nature in action. Then they will realize that the warning signs had been there all along right before their eyes, but they chose to ignore them so that they don't ruin this artificial perfect image that so inspired them. History is full of such case and many of them ended with a very very cruel and painful awakening! Let us hope America's will be gentle and not too destructive!

How about Republican slogans?
Ben,

While railing against "third grade slogans," I wonder why you neglected to include your hero's ""It's morning again in America."

And what about "I like Ike"? Does that seem profound to you?

I suggest you clip your column and read it in 10 or 12 years. I suspect you will feel embarrassed once you get a little perspective on things.

Murray
P.S. I don't recall what you wrote about Governor Palin, but some of her off-the-top-of-her-head comments did seem to be more childish than the unity many Americans now embrace.

President-elect Obama!

Analyze, self-diagnose, reflect, blame, catcall, regurgitate Rushannity, etc. all you like - as long as you preface his name with his proper title: President-elect.

I think one of the underreported stories this year has been the descent of right-wing talk radio (and in particular Rush and Hannity) into irrelevancy. If more than the smallest sliver of our population believed their asinine drivel, President-elect Obama would not be where he is today.

Democrats would be fools to reinstate the fairness doctrine: it is superfluous.

reality checks
Ben, I think your view isn't quite right.
I live in Nebraska, and work at Walmart. I only talk to the normal folks and not intellegencia. Bush may be irrelevant in the beltway. But here, he still matters. It's his folks running the RNC, he's still leading the party behind the scenes. He's polite but still struggling for the new tone he's talked about since day one. And that means spineless, ineffective and not driven by principal in practice. Chuck Hagel was a perfect example of what's wrong with our party. He retired, thankfully. But some other Rhino's were retired by the people this time around. Few true conservatives like Santorum get retired before their time, and when good candidates come along where is the RNC to support them? Why is Murtha still around instead of a heavy saturating campaign backed by the party in his district?
I held my nose and voted against Obama. But people less informed, or only informed by the MSM didn't realize how dangerous he was. When the conservative media folks are as excited and as active for their candidate as the rest of the press is about their candidate, maybe we can cut through the clutter and people will understand the issues better. Since that didnt' happen, we need more effective leaders, and the RNC needs to clean house from the top down.

Greenday
Greenday asks "What do we do now?"

I would suggest we all go use the bathroom!

One more thing
Shapiro ignores the elephant in the room. Watch Carl Cameron and Shep Smith from Fox News discuss the Palin factor:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWZHTJsR4Bc

In retrospect, a McCain/ Romney ticket would have fared much better.

It's simple

When the GOP gets elected on a conservative program and proceeds to trash it, at home and abroad, for eight years, culminating in an avalanche of sleaze and the worst financial crisis since 1929, which it proposes to fix by bailing out Wall Street bankers...

... then We the People feel, you know, kinda tired of it.

Obama got about the same number of votes as Bush (he of the "humbler foreign policy" and the small, limited state with sound finances) in 2004. O's increase over Kerry was mostly due to there being more blacks and Latinos, and their turnout being higher.

The GOP lost out because its disgusted, disillusioned supporters saw McAmnesty as more of the same old same old RINO-ism and stayed home. Caribou Barbie did not compensate.

Take a longer view.

For 30 years Americans have worked their tails off-- financing their rises in living standards not by getting bigger real wages (only the fat cats get those) but by borrowing.

Now all the debts are being called in, 401Ks and houese are suddenly worth as lot less, prospects are lousy, schools and healthcare are lousy too, the USA is an international laughing stock and Amnesty Juan said we must stay the course which got us to this point.

How could a halfway-careful Dem candidate lose? Even so, there have been bigger landslides.

Obama
This election was all about "feeling" not really thinking. People voted for Obama because it made them "feel good". How many Americans really understood any or all of Obama's proposed "changes"? Many voted for him because they hated Bush,or because of his race or because they thought it was the time for black person to be president. From interviews with voters I have heard none said they agreed with his foreign policy or domestic agenda. Nearly all were in tears and kept repeating "change".
They all might not like the change that will come.

This election was about the elite
using the mass media propaganda, bashing Bush for 8 years, playing the race card, playing the white guilt complex, brainwashing change, change, change to obaliar and his handlers, pouring $750 million into a campaign to use to manipulate the gullible, acorn's cheating and just like busing and affirmative action, wearing down and forcing the masses to accept a black man not qualified to be a mayor of most cities, to be president. This was not an election it was a cheating petending to be an election imposition on the masses ! Yet another social engineering experiment of the elite. obama did not earn this presidency, which had he been truly qualified and been the best candidate, more Americans, including myself, would of gladly voted for him. Instead it was given to him by the elite for their social engineering...oh but he spoke so well and clear so do millions of Americans of all heritages and he was so cool and calm, so would have been millions of Americans of all heritages were they in the same position and with the same set up.. oh but he was the best candidate, the most qualified...No he was not !!! oh but he is black and this is history, Exactly and created history, not earned, again !

Begin countdown
5..4...3..2.. Begin the countdown on how long it's going to be for the Obama charm to wear off African Americans after all their usual societal excuses get brushed off with "You must not be trying hard enough. Why can't you be like the president"

The difference
There is a vast difference in the euphoria we felt after electing Ronald Reagan and what we are seeing now in the wake of electing Obama.
"Morning in America" meant something. It implied a hope that had teeth. Obama's hope is wimpy compromise -- going along to get along. We knew Reagan could throw the roundhouse if he had to, and he did. Obama? He'll hold hands and sing "We Are the World." Pathetic. The illuminati smoke will clear and we'll see the truth soon enough.

CHILDISH UNITY
Excellent description of exactly what has just happened to our country. The day of the election I was listing to the Dave Ramsey show and he ask people to call in and say who they voted for and why. One caller from my city called in to say he voted for Obama. Dave Ramsey ask him why he voted for Obama, the caller answered that he liked what Obama had to say. Dave ask him what was a particular thing that Obama had said that he liked. At that point the caller's phone line went dead. He could not give one particular reason he voted for Obama, so the caller hung up.
I laughed when hearing this on national radio, but it was also sad that this was true for many of the people who voted for Obama. Will they understand what happened when Obama drags this country through the mud? Probably not! The media will still be blaming Bush for everything that goes wrong in the Obama administration.

Good insight
Good insight! Some people I know who should know better talk about Obama as a Lightbringer, and a transformative leader. Never have so many people's wishes been projected onto a leader ... wait a minute, didn't the Germans project onto Hitler?

One thing that is just amazing to me ... Obama is promoting a new national army -- just as big as the real army. No one asked any real questions about that. If Bush promoted this idea, the media would go insane.

WE WERE ALREADY 'INDIVISIBLE'
It's in our 'PLEDGE', the 'PLEDGE' where 'true' 'Patriotic' Americans stand and recite with their hands on their hearts.
The person elected--disrepecting our 'PLEDGE' does not put his hand on his heart. He divided us and we will remain so until those who elected him realize too late that 'change' changed our 'One Nation Under God' to warring divisions under government.

Good Ben, But For A Couple Of Things
"For eight years, Americans have been engaged in hostile politics." Not in MY 8 years have I engaged anyone in hostile politics or been in tghe presence of any hostile political discussions. Is is us? Or them -- them being ABCNBCNPRCBSCNNLATNYTWAPO, etc. Rhetorical only. You referred to the Obama issues, but did not get to those of McShame -- he had none -- except those he had promoted over time. Amnesty, free trade, bigger government, bailouts, cross-over politics, anti-Repub legislation, and the list goes on.

IT-----52
Obama's title= that damn socialist muslim.

He was directed there by morons, scum, slimeballs, idiots,p**ps,streetwalkers & dumba****.

That is fitting, don't ya think.

The bloom will drop soon enough...
The local news here in Jacksonville interviewed a black woman who attended the Obama rally on Monday. She was all but crying and said, "I'm so excited! If he gets elected, I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car, or paying my mortgage!" My advice to her would be to forward all her bills to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as of Jan. 20, and all her wishes and dreams will come true!

Not 'Unity,' Radicalism
The 'unity' that is being discussed by many writers is yet another Obama myth because he is not about unity; he is a prophet of self-fulfilling radicalism. The brainwashed zombies who were seen reveling in the streets waving Communist flags, shouting and chanting, have no idea what they were celebrating, they were merely being manipulated by clever handlers of the 'feel good' generation. When you observe the mentality of the public that voted for Obama and see the mindless disregard for the dangerous nature of his rhetoric, you can see the work of Bill Ayers. After declaring war on the United States using bombs and failing, he retreated into a sordid university and began destroying young people with his philosophy and text books; it is at this time that Barack Obama rushed in to help further the cause. This is a portrait of government-run education, or social engineering, in this country. Bill Ayers has been successful and I am sure that he is elated that he has participated in the destruction of the country that he so despises. Obama, the illegitimate spawn of white trash and a Kenyan goat-herder, with a world class supply of grievance, must be doubly proud.

Scapegoat
>No one cared about McCain, except the liberal media that nominated him president after one win in New Hampshire.<

The liberal media had nothing to do with setting up huge states like Florida and California as winner take all states. That was the RNC. That was the reason McCain won and won early.

Isn't it time conservatives quit blaming 'the media' for failures? Did conservatives ever give the media credit for presidential wins in '80, '84, '88, '00 and '04 or the Congressional wins in '94?

Present a message and candidates that resonate with voters, and recent history shows that to be a winning strategy.

An Afterthought
Part of the runup to the election were comments and denials about racism. Question: what will Obama's politics do for future race relations?

Why don't we tell the truth?
Oprah is running the country with her New Mega Church. She got Obama elected and now they can run the World. I agree with Rev Manning she is the anti-christ.

Pancho:Still having a hissy because Mitt

didn't get the nomination!

GET OVER IT!

Let's see
>Still having a hissy because Mitt

didn't get the nomination!<

One of the main reasons McCain lost was that he didn't resonate with voters that he was the guy to deal with the financial crisis, which was the #1 issue with about 65% of voters.

Isn't it possible that Romney, an economic wizard with a track record of success and leadership in both the private and public sectors, would have been the candidate better prepared to represent the party?

Too bad he didn't pass the religious test.

Now people are actually talking up Sarah Palin for 2012, a person whose greatest accomplishment is socialist government giveaways to her Alaskan constituents by way of corporate windfall profit taxing.

Nov 4 2008…Judgment Day…

First I would like to congratulate Obama for the greatest of victories. He got his moneys worth from the Democrat Party Machine, ACORN, and all the other supporters of his campaign. Lies and deception won-out this time and once the truth is known President Obama will have a lot of explaining to do and will become history’s answer to; “WHY DID AMERICA IMPLODE ON ITS SELF”.

Now… (I hope I am wrong) Let the revolution begin with…”WE THE PEOPLE”, have decided that our founding fathers were wrong. Their principles, ideals and their American Dream flawed. “WE THE PEOPLE” have decided that the Socialist principles, ideals and the Marxist Dream are a much better way.

I find it unbelievable that America would elect an unknown far left Liberal/Socialist as President of these United States of America. What have we done? Do we realize that we just enabled a far left Liberal/Socialist agenda upon ourselves? Our forefathers must be turning over in their graves. Mr. “HOPE AND CHANGE” with lack of grit will, both at home and aboard; be tested early and often. What if he fails these tests? Then WHAT…? Can we afford his failures?

We have chosen an intelligent, eloquent but untested conman as our leader of the “Free World”. The obvious apprehension is that the anointed one is a stranger—a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant but flawed stranger with whom we had a torrid affair. Once we wake up, we will see the ring and wonder who exactly we married last night.” If President Obama is able to parley Congress to get what he has promised (taking from Peter and giving it to Paul; you will always get Paul’s vote), this wake-up-call may come to late to save America. We made the mistake of giving him the ring on November 4th. We were so disposed in doing so, only time will tell if we will live to regret it. Nov. 4th, 2008 will become known as “Judgment Day”.

Iran wants NO Confrontations

AYATOLLAH ALI KHAMENEI

"The president-elect has promised changes in policies. There is a capacity for the improvement of ties between America and Iran if Obama pursues his campaign promises, including not confronting other countries as Bush did in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also concentrating on America's state matters and removing the American people's concerns."

"The Iranian nation never recognized Israel and will never ever recognize it," he said at a news conference. "But we feel pity for those who have been deceived or smuggled into Israel to be oppressed citizens in Israel."

"It is incorrect, irrational, pointless and nonsense to say that we are friends of Israeli people."

"But we are on a collision course with the occupiers of Palestine and the occupiers are the Zionist regime, This is the position of our regime, our revolution and our people."

"...And he (Barack Obama) has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking." Louis Farrakhan

"Whiteness, as revealed in the history of America, is the expression of what is wrong with man. It is a symbol of man's depravity. God cannot be white, even though white churches have portrayed him as white. When we look at what whiteness has done to the minds of men in this country, we can see clearly what the New Testament meant when it spoke of the principalities and powers."
- James H. Cone; Black Theology & Black Power; p 150

Yes, Immature...
People seem to keep missing the observation of Obama's extreme immaturity. As it was pointed out during the campaign, he will be learning on the job. It will become obvious as he chooses his staff. A lot of us believe this historic election to actually be an embarrassment for America. Not to mention, we will now have a President that will divide people by promoting class warfare. An arrogant, elitist, liar, who will be chased out of office in 4 years! George Bush will look like a saint.

I just read the George Will article...
and when you compare the comments on Ben Shapiro's piece to the comments on George Will's piece there is an odd result. On the Will piece which basically tries to start a Republican analysis of what happened similar to the one Ben Shapiro is presenting, the trolls comments are almost all positive. On the Ben Shapiro article above the trolls are all attacking his analysis. Mr Shapiro, I liked the article and since you seem to have set off the democratic trolls that for some reason are still infesting the Townhall website you must have hit the nerve of truth.

Did Democrats Cause Financial Crisis?
Call me a conspiracist, wacko or even silly but I can't shake the feeling that the financial crisis was instigated & carried out by laws and regulations forced by the Democrats in their last total control in 1992-93.

Am I the only one that has noticed how Socialists have run and won elections in our Northeast & Western states since Clinton?

Come on people, just like me you saw it coming and told yourself that Socialism will never happen in a Capitalist country under our constitution.
Well It has been creeping in your lives with and withut your permission..Obama now has to decide which constitutional rights he and the Democrats can manipulate to destroy the individual freedom system in this country.

Individualism & Socialism are like oil & water , you have to take away one or the other for it to work.

Civil war is not too farfetched if Individual freedom is breached by those in power.

A sad day for constitutional patriots.
Cry for the children.

Unity HAH
He just appointed Rahm Emmanuel as chief of staff, the guy who said Republicans can go F-- themselves.

Yeah, great guy you Dems elected there.

Stupid Article
A true leader should be able to get the people behind him. He talked about his policies, his goals unlike John McCain who talked 90% of the time about Obama. McCain has zero leadership qualities. This guy already showed how with sheer will power and desire without resorting to third rate mud-slinging you can get where you want. He started with zero money. He had to face Clintons. Then he had to face this angry and disgusting Republican Mob. He conducted himself with dignity and poise. The election is about the change. For once Let us be led by someone who is smarter. We wanted a regular guy someone who we can have beer with. Big mistake. McCain is no different from Bush. Infact i rate him worse. Obama is the best possible candidate for us. Already entire world is celebrating. So cut the crap and get behind Obama.

Bravo, Ben ! LAMA !!
Americans have NOT achieved the fulfillment of the Dr. King dream - they have voted for someone IN SPITE OF his character and BECAUSE OF the color of his skin. I feel certain there was a more qualified, dark-skinned American more well-suited to becoming the first "black" American president somewhere in these United States. Well, we'll see what he does with it. It should certainly be interesting - although I must admit I never really thought I'd see Americans embrace a Socialist so heartily.

Excellent analysis:Except in addition to

"... Americans’ puerile need for unity through self-congratulatory, cathartic membership in a broad, transformative political movement." it also had to do with how painfully uneducated and uninformed Americans are, in LARGE part.

Wynton Hall wrote in his TH column yesterday...

"Karl Marx is Not the Father of Capitalism"

"I once asked a room full of COLLEGE STUDENTS who the father of capitalism was.

"Crickets began chirping as blank stares shot my way.

“'Oh, come on,' I prompted. 'Does anyone want to take a guess?'

"Finally, one bold student blurted out, 'Isn’t it Karl Marx?'”

This was a room full of COLLEGE STUDENTS, and NO ONE KNEW!!!!!

We know, from personal experience right here on TH, leftists have NO CLUE what Marxism/Communism/Socialism really IS!!!

And THOSE are the ones who voted for Marxist Obama and his DOOMED policies.

Prager is old and ...
I'm old; and when we are gone... even though I am goy, it is satifying to know that the young people will have a devout and reflective man who follows God's call to read from.
Hold fast to the faithfulness of God!

"True Believer"
As fascinating, may be what this event says about America(ns). I've dusted off Eric Hoffer's work on the study of mass movements. When I read it years ago, I thought that the -ism and cult following of a phenom was reserved for historic Germany and other times and places.

Childish comments
wow, a lot of "childish" comments on this site. You may not agree with the war, but you support the troops. You may not agree with the President-elect, but you must support him. I was not for McCain, but had he been elected, I would have supported him. I definitely was not for Palin, but I would have supported her out of loyalty to our country. It is the mature thing to do.

There is no unity
56,000,000+ voted against Obama. The fight is only beginning. Conversatives will take back the Republican Party and we will support its conservative leaders and solicit more republicans to become activists to take back this country from the socialists known as the Democratic party.

Pull up our shirt sleeves, get to work
I am part of the 1 percent that voted for neither magor party, and all you conservative don't start telling me I wasted my vote. I vote for what I believe. Plus if it makes you feel better I live in Texas, which is a red state.
Me I am going to give Obama the benefit of the doubt. He gave a very good speech and said we all need to push up our shirt sleeves and get to work. To bring me on board, that statement is going to have to apply to every able body person in this country. I have been a productive member of our society since I was 16. So every able body person in this country that has been living off my efforts, needs to get off their butt, stop whining and do their part. No more free rides and then maybe Obama will get my support when everybody is pulling thier own weight. Only time will tell.

Kathy/NC writes: "...they have voted for

someone IN SPITE OF his character and BECAUSE OF the color of his skin."

Sadly and painfully that IS THE TRUTH!

THE FIRST THING OBAMA NEEDS TO DO
is to stop, today, being an African-American President elect and start being an American President elect.
Enough said, God IS in charge and good will come from this and we will probably recognize that good.

B O is still offensive but we must learn to accept it.

TBC ~:>{)

What it was about
You said it so well - now we all gather and sing Kum bai ya (sp?)

I blame the educational system
I say this as a public school teacher. Students today do not learn half of what I learned in high school. They have been dumbed down by the politicians who mandate the flimsy curriculum. Half of the time the students are in school, they are undergoing mandated testing. The other half they are dismissed for teachers to have meaningless meetings. The students don't know any words with more than five letters in them, don't know what a verb is, can't write a coherent paragraph, yet are encouraged to write "what they feel," spelling be damned.

I won't even bring up politics in my class. The direction of the comments I hear off-hand is so pathetic, I don't think it's worth class time to air them. I have no idea what goes on (or doesn't) in history classes, but my students don't know their history. Education has become a sinkhole and we are paying for this as a country. Obama's election doesn't surprise me. The electorate doesn't have a clue.

To Lon in PA
I read obama's position papers and they seemed to have been written by a group of academics who really have little understanding of how things actually work. The positions are a fall back to the Carter (those glorious years of 15% inflation,12% housing loans, and 9% unemployment. Add a dose of Hoover trade protectionism, forced growth of Unions, huge spending increases, higher taxes and a self-absorbed Congress and the receipe for disaster has been born.

Anne - your comments are sad

Anne, it amazes me that you have the ability to read the mind of the millions of people who voted for Obama. You know for a fact that they voted for him because of the color of his skin and not because of his character. Caroline Kennedy, Hillary and Bill Clinton all voted for Obama because of the color of his skin. They didn't even think about his character. Believe it or not, a lot of people in this country do not see color. It is very sad that you cannot grasp that concept.

bryce1
Obama ran a brilliant campaign?

Well, I guess if you factor in the slavish, lapdog press that was totally in the tank for him and didn't vet him AT ALL, and you factor in all the outrageous lies that he and Biden told throughout the campaign, and you factor in the financial mess that Democrats caused (but were strangely blamed on Bush and Republicans), then you MIGHT be able to make a case about his campaign.

Bryce1, the fact is that Shapiro is EXACTLY right. Americans like you ARE childish. Major issues like immigration, abortion, gay marriage, coal regulation, etc... were never even addressed by any of the left wing debate moderators (also in the tank for Obama), and that's why Obama was able to cast himself as a moderate, which he is NOT. Sarah Palin's wardrobe got more attention than Obama's radical positions on major issues.

ropati et al

I believe Education should be about survival in whatever era one finds themselves.

Most all Americans agree that our Educational system isn't working. America is ranked 18th in the world even though we spend more money than any other country per student. How then would we solve this problem?

Many centuries ago, mankind realized that little nature gives one is suited for survival and must be transformed to meet their needs and the needs of those they are responsible for i.e. family.

Early mankind realized that they must be pro-active and seek to enhance skills, knowledge and implements to ensure the survival and well being of self and family.

The earliest Schools were started out of necessity for survival.

This 'survival' school had teachers (parents) students (children) a curriculum and a graduation.

Curriculum consisted of Courses on: shelter, Clothing, fire, hunting, fishing, planting and harvesting, gathering, defense, finding ones way, language etc. IOW 'Survival'.

Tradition and history were so important, that while resting around the fire at night the teachers recited over and over to their students the necessity of learning from the past and not repeating failure.

Life and death was determined by the skill of the teacher and the hard work and determination of the student.

Survival School was tough and grades were easily measured, 'Graduates' lived and prospered, non-graduates died.

Education is NO longer about survival.

Diversity <> Unity

Diverse means: composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities.

The assimilation of diversity brings unity.

Non-Assimilation of diversity brings a fractured non-unified society.

Liberals are clueless.

touchy topics
annfann, you state that "Major issues like immigration, abortion, gay marriage, coal regulation, etc... were never even addressed by any of the left wing debate moderators (also in the tank for Obama)", maybe you didn't notice, but Obama did discuss abortion, gay marriage and coal regulation, as well as McCain. Neither one of them discussed immigration - that was a hot topic neither one wanted to go near. Get your facts straight before ranting and raving and making a fool of yourself.

UNITY !!!
I can't believe that anyone would think this election was about unity.

For the first time in my life I understand and empathize with the Irish Republican Army and why they fought so hard over British rule.
If that one tries to ramrod socialism down the American throat he'll be confronted by much better armed version of the same like-minded folks.

Frankie
Can you actually point to an aspect of Obama's policies that are a fallback to Carter's? His tax proposals are much closer to those of Bill Clinton, and the misery index was about as low as it has been during the Clinton years.

By contrast, the health care proposals go far beyond anything Carter proposed, or even Clinton for that matter.

Obviously I respect your attempts to understand Obama's policies and why people found them attractive more than Shapiro's childish whining about how people didn't vote the way he wanted them to so they must all be stupidheads. But I am still puzzled about what you think is similar about Obama's position papers and the Carter years, rather than say the Clinton years.

It's fun to read the whining here!!!
Now it's time to join the United States of America. You pseudo conservative/Republican reactionaries and doomsayers need to take a deep breath, recognize the reality of the situation and accept the fact that you lost.

Your ideas lost, your dogma lost and your issues lost.

Nobody cares about "family values" when the country is facing a depression. Nobody cares about single issue voting on abortion or "Taxes" when the unemployment rate will continue to increase to new records.

Face it, Bush lied and destroyed this country in the process.

We can only hope that the truth will start flowing out about this administration and the corruption that it fostered on the American populace.

Have a happy day!!

none
I did not hear Obama backpedal on any of his glorius promises. But then I never thought the appeal of Obama was one of glorius promises so much as a serious approach to issues that matter.

But by all means tell me what issues he backpedaled on, and I if in fact they are issues which were the basis for my support for him, then I will be crushed. If instead they were restatements of his actual positions rather than statements about the ludicrous cartoon of him that his opponents have tried to draw then I will be laughing at you instead.

bryce1
And when, exactly, did you and the other liberals get behind President Bush?

Mr. Obama is not a force of nature, he is a created image. He can say what he wants, but actions speak louder than words, and I will believe his actions (or none-actions) over anything he says.

Democracy in America
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote of democracy being corrupted by a "soft despotism" in which citizens would vote for those politicians who promise to use the state to give them whatever they want which reminds me of the Jefferson quote that a government strong enough to give you everything you want is also strong enough to take everything you have.

Tocqueville's soft despotism is an accurate description of both Obama and his supporters.

Amy:

Did most American voters vote for Obama because he is a so-called black? No. Did many black voters vote for him because they consider him to be black? Yes. Most people voted for Obama because they were mindless, this is especially true of the young. Looking at the rally in Chicago I though I was seeing a re-enactment of the 1934 Unity and Strength Rally at Nuremberg. Obama even used the same sort of code words as the Nazis did--unity, sacrifice and the like.

The stock market dropped yesterday and it will continue to drop as Obama has promised to increase capital gain taxes from 100% to 500% (if you have capital gains and are at the 10% bracket you pay 5%, Obama would take them to 25%). I hope Obama is a liar and not a fool. If he lied to con the economic stupid on the left to get elected and is really pragmatic and has no plans to raise taxes--great. But I fear he is a fool instead and will do what he promises and if he does he will be the Second Coming of Hoover and we know how that turned out.

Bill
I did not mean to leave you out. If you know of actual contradictions between his stated positions and his position papers by all means point them out and crush those Obama supporters that have been mislead.

I did get a good laugh out of your objecting to the way liberals support their candidate when it turned out the unfair part was an appeal to his stated policies. Conservatives are funny (except oddly when they try to do satire).

If it had to be a Democrat
We would have been better off with Hillary Clinton.

Already
The true colors are coming out, days after the election.

The most partisan left wing nut job for Secretary of State.

Get ready for some fun times. Learn to speak Russian. Begin getting comfortable with the term "comrade"

So many questions...
Along with many of the questions and issues raised in the above posts, an issue came up during this election that really made me wonder, who is responsible for verifying a presidential candidate's country of birth? It's been discussed several times that Obama wouldn't pass a security clearance for a White House job due to his associations, but who confirms a candidate's eligibility? Are we just supposed to take someone's word that they are American-born without any confirmation? This is a constitutional issue here, and Obama's birth records are sealed, those should be a matter of public record for chrissake! We're in deep folks, and it ain't gonna get better.

Lon
We have no idea what his policies are. One he has been vague and even when he has been specific he changes them on an almost daily basis--raise taxes on people making aboive 300,000, then 250,000 then it was 200,000, one of his mouth pieces, Bill Richardson said it was 127,000.

Pull out of NAFTA, then no he didn't mean it. Out of Iraq in 6 months, no he didn't mean it. And on and on. Juan Williams a Obama-man (and on the verge of tears Tuesday night when the election was called--made you want to vomit)called him a "stealth candidate."

People voted for him because he was the anti-Bush and McCain was seen as the Second Coming of Bush, since Bush was at 24%, guess who they voted for?

The people who voted for Obama had no a clue about where Obama stands because no one knows where he stands.

Amy comment please

Telling the Truth about Obama

Telling the Truth about Barack Obama causes many to think that one is distorting the facts.

Barack Obama has such serious character flaws that the 'Truth' about him seems like an attack.

One doesn't have to make up anything or distort anything about Barack Obama - telling the truth about him is all that is necessary.

Amy/TN: Sorry, not a good debating point

OF COURSE there were many....

"Anne, it amazes me that you have the ability to read the mind of the millions of people who voted for Obama."

Just so you know, YOU LOST your argument with THAT, your first comment!!!

And yes, I know some blacks who REFUSED to vote for Marxist Obama, and I know some whites who DID for for Marxist Obama.

And I also know some blacks and whites who voted for Marxist Obama simply because they would vote for whomever was on the demo ticket.

BUT many, many, many polls indicated that many of those who DID vote for Marxist Obama did so because it was important to them that we elect the first black president.

And if you'd paid attention, you'd have known how often Marxist Obama himself brought up the race issue, and how often people were accused of being racist simply because they were NOT going to vote to Marxist Obama.

Kathy/NC was spot on when she posted, "... they have voted for someone IN SPITE OF his character and BECAUSE OF the color of his skin."

Obama
Excellent analysis!

Subtle?
from article:
"And the Obama campaign subtly played on this theme."

Dude, there was NOTHING subtle about it, there were so many race cards being played that Hoyle almost ran out of decks.

Amen
Very well said. After the fanfare dies down, we need to remember that issues do matter. If issues no longer matter to the people, then our democratic status is in jeopardy. I hope it is not already.

New and Improved
President-elect Obama has run a campaign unlike any other. He has taken the art of marketing to a whole new level. The only problem, in the end he will not and cannot deliver. In fact, when has he ever delivered? Not even his staunches allies can offer anything of substance regarding this man's past record. Have we been duped? Yes and no! One-line slogans have always been with us, so too has the art of speech. We are whom we have voted for and that is a society whose inability to pause long enough and to give thought to what an individual really stands for. Not for how he or she makes feel. Also, I would like to give special thanks to those in media who have failed miserably as professionals. Not only have you done a disservice to your profession, but more importantly a disservice to your country, for never questioning this man’s record (or lack of it), acquaintances and prior and current political leanings. We will eventually reap the seeds from which we sow.

MOURNING IN AMERICA
It is exceedingly sad that so many of our citizens have proven themselves to be so morally and spiritually bankrupt that they would fall for the empty rhetoric of such a charlatan as Obama. It is true that if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything.

bryce1
Hardly.

Yes, having a D by this name means he will support abortion and put leftists on the SCOTUS and the lower courts--this everyone should know. But Iraq? Have no idea. First, said out in 6 months and now, who knows?

Tax cuts? for 95% of the people and now word is that tax cuts will be "delayed." Tax increases? The taget keeps getting lower and lower doesn't it? He said he would bankrupt the coal industry, I wonder if people know that will increase your electric bill by 25%, think people who voted for him know this? Think the idiots that voted for him in PA where coal mining is important knew this?

Alt. Energy:

Great, but when government tries to push something it usually fails and fails in an expensive fashion. Despite the mythical power those in the West think MITI had, most of Japan's biggest economic success stories had nothing to do with MITI--e.g. Sony. If there were a market for large scale alt. energy, the market would provide. But today, oil is still cheaper and more reliable. When that is no longer the case the market will switch and the government wasting money on this will not make the switch happen any faster.

Bush tax cuts? So you want to eliminate the 10% bracket? The elimination of the "Bush tax cuts" will raise taxes on everyone, not just the rich and some that now have no tax burden would have to pay taxes.

You think increasing the capital gain taxes 500% on a person in the 10% bracket makes sense just so we can be "fair."

Lon et al

Lon or do you want to be called 'Comrade Lon'?

Workers of the United States! Struggle to achieve a complete equality of outcomes among all persons regardless of their skills, efforts, and citizenship!

Do you agree with that statement?

Unity
Examine history and you will find that the cause of human atrocity is the striving for unity ... that by necessity must eliminate disunity.

Do Heretics need to hide? Hate speech, the fairness doctrine, and the general tone of political correctness orchestrated by the orthodox(Leftist)media will tell...
