The WNBA made headlines once again, but not for its achievements. During a recent game, a player seized the microphone in honor of George Floyd and used the moment to deliver a lecture on racism to the entire crowd. What was intended to be a tribute quickly turned into a political statement that many fans felt was more about virtue signaling than unity.
Yes, five years later, we’re still hearing about George Floyd’s death—this time through the lens of woke talking heads pushing social justice narratives. Before a recent game against the Connecticut Sun, WNBA player Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx took to the microphone and claimed Floyd’s death symbolized deep flaws in the American criminal justice system. Once again, sports fans were subjected to political messaging in a space meant for competition, not activism.
Collier went on to argue that Floyd’s death was yet another example of what she sees as systemic injustice in American society.
“George was a father, a brother, and a son, and his life, like every life, held meaning. His death exposed the holes that are still in our justice and criminal institutions today. His fifth anniversary reminds us that we want to continue the fight against criminal, racial, and social injustices. We can not stay silent,” she said.
“Thank you guys for taking a minute to honor the life of George Floyd. George was a father, a brother, and a son. And his life, like every life, held meaning,” Collier’s rant continued.
However, in typical woke fashion, Collier failed to include key context from her remarks to the nearly 8,000-person crowd, namely, that Floyd had a lengthy criminal history, resisted arrest during the incident, and had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system, according to the autopsy report. His death also triggered a summer of nationwide unrest, marked by violent riots, looted businesses, and cities left grappling with widespread destruction.
