According to the Wall Street Journal, between topics like basketball and financial reform, Obama told Brown that Democrats would be moving forward with a plan to overhaul the nation's immigration laws in one month. Brown said the president had asked him to "give it some serious thought."
In turn, Brown promised Obama he'd have "an open mind" in reviewing the bill--one which Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have been working to finalize. So far, Graham has been the only Republican to signal support for the measure and Obama is obviously hoping to pick off some of the more moderate members from the GOP caucus to make it look like a truly bipartisan measure.
Last month, thousands of immigration activists stormed Washington, demanding comprehensive reform. After the heated health care debate, most pundits were sure Democrats would not have the political will to tackle another major issue like immigration reform before heading into the November midterm elections. But odds are that Democrats and their liberal supporters see this as their best shot to push an amnesty plan through Congress.
Democrats are undoubtedly aware they will need every vote they can get this election cycle, especially votes from the Latino community which helped boost them to power in 2008.
