Reports: After Failing To Gain Traction On Gun Confiscation, Eric Swalwell Plans To Exit 2020 Race

Well, it looks like we’ll have our first official drop out for the 2020 season this afternoon. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who ran on gun confiscation, is reportedly deciding to exit the race for the Democratic nomination and plans to run for re-election to his House seat in deep blue California instead. Yeah, real shocker that running on an unconstitutional gun control initiative, among many other things, didn’t help. Also, no one knows who the hell he is. He made a clown of himself in the first debate, drawing attention to himself for all the wrong reasons. Simply put, there are other Democrats running for the nomination that are better at this than he is and he wasn’t going anywhere to start. He’s also a Russian collusion myth peddler. The rumblings of a possible drop out were heard yesterday when he decided to canceled campaign events in New Hampshire (via The Hill):

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) will hold a press conference Monday afternoon amid speculation that he may be dropping out of the Democratic primary contest.

The news conference at his Dublin, Calif., headquarters is scheduled for 4 p.m. EDT, his campaign said, though it did not provide details on what Swalwell planned to address.

Swalwell announced his campaign for the White House in April but has struggled to gain traction. Speculation has swirled in recent days that the California congressman could be preparing to exit the primary.

Most public polls show him in the low single digits or, in some cases, not registering at all. And while he met the polling threshold to qualify for the first set of primary debates, he could face trouble in the fall, when the bar for participation will be raised.

Last week, he abruptly canceled two days of campaign events in New Hampshire, further stoking rumors of an impending exit.

At first, it appeared that former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper would be the first 2020 loser, given his dismal polling numbers, his lack of money (he said to be out by the end of the month, and his top aides telling him he should’ve backed out last month. It looks like Swalwell will be the first.

UPDATE: He's Out:

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) is dropping out of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, according to a House Democratic lawmaker close to the congressman.

Swalwell is expected to make a formal announcement at a press conference this afternoon.

[...]

The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday that Swalwell, who is a close ally of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, is expected to announce he will launch a reelection bid for his fifth term in the lower chamber.
