Why the "Celebrity" Narrative Could Hurt

The McCain campaign has clearly decided to mock Obama's "celebrity" status.  This, of course, is not an absurd political strategy.  For years now, Republicans have effectively (and correctly) portrayed liberals as out-of-touch with the average person.  This is merely the latest incarnation.

Of course, some people will say this is negative or bogus.  But the truth is that narratives don't really work unless there is, at least, some truth to them (think John Kerry windsurfing).   Are you going to tell me Obama hasn't been treated like a celebrity??? 

Clearly, Obama's team has overtly attempted to cultivate his celebrity image.  And he has been aided and abetted by their willing accomplices in the media.  This narrative has the chance to take off, simply because it's so true.  What is more, it mocks the candidate -- and the media ...
