Here’s What One Poll Is Showing About a Potential Harris vs. Trump Election

Townhall covered how President Joe Biden had a disastrous performance in the presidential debate last Thursday. In just one instance, Biden went on a tangent about illegal immigration when he was asked about Trump’s pro-life record. Then, he stated that women need access to abortion because they get “raped by their brothers and sisters.”

After the debate, reports indicated that other Democrats were being discussed as replacements for Biden in the race to the White House.

A CNN poll released on Tuesday showed that Vice President Kamala Harris is running closer to former President Donald Trump in a potential 2024 matchup than Biden is.

The poll found that 45 percent of registered voters would back Harris in an election against Trump. In this matchup, Trump has the support of 47 percent of voters. Five percent said they’d vote for someone else.

In a Trump vs. Biden matchup, Trump has 49 percent support while Biden has 43 percent support. Four percent said they’d vote for someone else.

In a California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vs. Trump matchup, Newsom has the support of 43 percent of voters. Trump has support from 48 percent of voters. Seven percent said they’d vote for someone else.

Between Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) and Trump, Trump has 47 percent of support to Whitmer’s 42 percent. Seven percent said they’d vote for someone else.

When respondents were asked, “Do you think Democrats have a better chance of winning the presidency in 2024 if Joe Biden is the party's nominee, or do they have a better chance of winning with someone else as the party's nominee?” The majority of respondents, 75 percent, indicated that Democrats would have a better chance with someone else. Only 25 percent said the party would have a better chance with Biden.

The poll was conducted from June 28 through June 30 of 1,274 respondents. The margin of sampling error for total respondents is +/- 3.5 at the 95% confidence level.

David Chalian told CNN that Biden supporters plan to vote for him as a vote against Trump, whereas Trump voters are voting “for Trump.”

After Biden’s disastrous performance at the debate last Thursday, rumors have circulated that the Democratic Party will replace him in the race.

According to The Hill, Harris, Newsom, and Whitmer are all being floated as potential Biden replacements. A YouGov poll conducted Friday morning, right after the debate, nearly half of Americans believed that the Democratic Party should replace President Joe Biden in the 2024 election, which Townhall covered.
