Maxine Waters Jokes About Running for President: I'll Do It If Millennials Want Me To

Brace yourselves for the lineup of potential Democratic presidential candidates for the 2020 election—Rep. Maxine Waters could be among them.

Many were speculating whether her scheduled appearance in New Hampshire this weekend signaled whether a 2020 bid may be in the cards for the California congresswoman, who’s been one of the loudest critics of President Trump in Congress.

“I’m just going up to do a county Democratic thing. That’s all,” she told The Daily Caller.

But when pressed, she said she’d do it if millennials wanted her to.

“I’m not running for anything but my own seat. I don’t have any presidential aspirations,” she said. “If the millennials want me to do it, I’d do it, though.”

Waters, who’s in her 14th term representing California’s 43rd District in the Los Angeles, has repeatedly called for Trump’s impeachment.

“We don’t have to be afraid to use the word impeachment,” she said at the Center for American Progress conference in May. “We don’t have to think impeachment is out of our reach.”

“All we have to do is make sure we are talking to the American public, we are keeping them involved, we are challenging every day, we are resisting every day.”

Waters will speak Sunday at the Strafford County Democrats Annual Picnic along with Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter.

Update: Waters clarified she was completely joking about running.

“I said, jokingly, ‘If the millennials wanted me to do it, I’d do it,’” Waters told The Hill. “But it’s a joke.”
