New Poll Has Trump, Clinton in Dead Heat Nationally

Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump keeps on slipping—so much so that the two are now in a dead heat.

In the latest CBS News/New York Times poll released on Thursday, Trump and Clinton are tied at 40 percent thanks to the former secretary of state’s numbers dropping by 3 percentage points, and the businessman’s rising by 3 points since last month.

Even when Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson is added to the mix the race looks much the same. Johnson got 12 percent of the vote, but Clinton and Trump were still tied at 36 percent.

While Clinton was not indicted for matters relating to her use of a private email account and server for her work as Secretary of State, she was harshly criticized by the FBI director, and her standing on some key candidate qualities has taken a bit of a hit.

Sixty-seven percent of voters now say Clinton is not honest and trustworthy, up from 62 percent last month and the highest percentage this election cycle. Only 28 percent view her as honest. Clinton's ratings on honesty were more positive soon after she announced her presidential bid in April of last year. Also, fewer now say she is prepared for the job of president than did so last month - although half still say she is.

Still, Donald Trump doesn’t fare all that much better, with 62 percent of voters saying they don’t believe he’s honest.

The poll was conducted July 8-12. Among the 1,600 adults surveyed, 1,258 were registered voters.
