'Roseanne' Actress Confused by Women Voting for Trump: They're 'Under the Thumb' of Their Husbands

'Roseanne' Actress Confused by Women Voting for Trump: They're 'Under the Thumb' of Their Husbands

“Roseanne” actress Sandra Bernhard was asked about Trump Wednesday evening as the newly-revived sitcom made waves by featuring the titular character as a Trump supporter.

Bernhard, who plays Nancy Bartlett Thomas in the show, told MSNBC’s Ari Melber she didn’t understand “white women for Trump.”

“Can’t understand it,” she said. “I don’t know where it comes from. I think it’s a couple of issues. I think it’s being either under the thumb of your husband or, for the election, it was being so offended by Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton’s legacy that you turned on her.”

“Or feeling inadequate,” she theorized, “feeling like how could somebody be so educated, how could somebody have brought themselves up from their own experience and gone to the top, educated herself, fought for rights — civil rights and equality. And I think that’s threatening to a lot of women.”

Bernhard added that “a lot of women have compromised, given in, gotten married, raised their kids and not had the luxury of being able to think for themselves.”

"I'm not saying none of these women work,” she said, “of course they do, but there's just those little gradations in how you look at other women and the sort of feeling of inadequacy."

Bernhard’s remarks are interesting given that her costar Roseanne Barr is a Trump supporter in real life and in the show. Over 18 million people tuned into the show Wednesday which featured family drama as Roseanne and her sister disagreed over voting for Trump. President Trump called Barr to congratulate her on the show's success.
