Flashback: Trump Has Said Twice that He Wanted Oprah as His VP Pick

In a 1999 interview with Larry King, Trump said Oprah Winfrey would be his first choice as his pick for vice president if he ran for president. The interview has resurfaced following speculation that Oprah might run after her rousing speech following the acceptance of the Cecile B. DeMille Award and a joke at the Golden Globes Sunday encouraging her to run.

“I’ll tell you, she’s really a great woman. She’s a terrific woman. She’s somebody that’s very special,” Trump told Larry King. “If she’d do it she’d be fantastic.”

President Trump expressed his desire to have Oprah as his running mate a second time in 2015 to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, telling him he “would love to have Oprah” and she was a friend of his.

Oprah has not given a clear indication of whether or not she is seriously considering a 2020 campaign. Her speech was focused on praising the press and the #MeToo movement.

“I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because we all know the press is under siege these days,” she said. “We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice.”

"I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon,” she continued. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'Me too' again."
