White House counselor Kellyanne Conway seems to be constantly criticized by the media for everything from her posture to the way she phrases statements. But Girls creator and liberal activist Lena Dunham tweeted Sunday that a certain kind of criticism of Conway needs to stop.
“Insulting another woman's appearance, even one you ideologically disdain, isn't moving the needle forward. Seems crazy to have to explain,” Dunham wrote, adding that she was “no saint” but she doesn’t “for example, get sassy about Kellyanne Conway's looks. It muddies the waters and prevents real discourse.”
“Or are we all just pretending to want real discourse?” she wondered.

Dunham raises a salient point and some news outlets have also noted the harsh criticisms aimed at Conway’s appearance rather than her arguments.
In a skit that received mixed reviews in February, Saturday Night Live (SNL) portrayed a hyper-sexualized and violent Conway as Glenn Close's character from Fatal Attraction.
SNL did a skit Saturday targeting President Trump’s deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s looks, depicting her eating throughout the skit and saying, “My mother is a big Southern hamburger.”
“You guys were mean about Huckabee Sanders,” CNN’s Chris Cuomo said about the skit. “You were fat-shaming her. You were talking about how she looks and what she wears. I thought that it was mean, not funny.”
Hopefully SNL will heed Dunham’s advice and stop viewing conservative women’s looks as fair game.
