Pixar's Cars 2 Demagogues Against Oil Companies

Pixar's Cars 2 Demagogues Against Oil Companies
Looking for a good family-friendly flick this weekend? You might be best-advised to steer clear of Cars 2. (See what I did there?) For one thing, it's gotten pretty poor reviews (

37% on Rotten Tomatoes). But the director came out and said he explicitly decided to make "big oil" the bad guy.

No matter what subject matter it is, they have to be logical for the world we’re creating. I kept thinking about, “OK. A spy movie in the world where cars are alive. What would be a really good kind of über bad guy? Who is an über bad guy?” I kept going to big oil. This is before what happened in the Gulf of Mexico.

Why isn’t alternative fuel more… Why isn’t everybody jumping on that bandwagon? It makes so much sense: Electricity, solar, whatever. There’s ethanol. There’s all this stuff you could be doing. And so I thought, well, that could be really cool in that you could have big oil versus alternative fuel.

So if your kids are getting edgy this weekend, you could just send them outside for a few hours instead of infecting them with enviropropaganda!

I don't actually think this is a great injustice. Environmental messages have been around forever. I was reared on Captain Planet and Ferngully (voluntarily; this wasn't pushed on me by anyone) and still turned out a conservative. One of Pixar's most recent films, Wall-E, was about the Earth being wrecked by consumerism and trash. It was still a great film that many, both Left and Right, loved. Conservatism still soldiers on despite left-wing messages sometimes present in childrens' media.

But if you are concerned about letting left-wing environmentalism infect your kids, Cars 2 should be easy enough to avoid.

Here's a flashback to Ferngully which, despite the obvious environmental message, was a film I really enjoyed growing up. As you can see, the villain is pure pollution who thrives on human greed and avarice. Can't get much more explicit than that!
