Speaking from the Oval Office during a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in Tuesday, President Trump said the June 12 summit planned with North Korea in Singapore may or may not happen. He also said he isn't guaranteeing North Korea a deal.
"We'll see what happens, whether or not it happens. If it does, it will be a great thing for North Korea and if it doesn't, that's okay too. Whatever it is, it is...There are certain conditions we want to happen. I think we'll get those conditions. And if we don't, we won't have the meeting. Frankly, it has the chance to be a great great meeting for North Korea and a great meeting for the world. If it doesn't happen, maybe it will happen later. Maybe it will happen at a different time. We will see. We are talking," Trump said. "North Korea has a chance to be a great country and it can't be a country under these circumstances they are living right now. I think they should seize the opportunity."
"If it doesn't work out, he [Kim Jong Un] can't be happy," the president continued, adding that if Un comes to the table and is able get a deal, he will be "very proud" of what he has done for North Korea.
Trump said if an agreement is reached, which he wants approved by Congress, it would be best to have all issues contained in one deal. He also talked about the potential for South and North Korea to live side-by-side in peace or as one, reunified country. He also said South Korea, China and Japan are willing to help "make North Korea great.”
"We are looking at two Koreas," Trump said. "Maybe in the future they will go back to one Korea.”
When asked about specific conditions going into the summit for the regime, Trump said "he'd rather not say" and would not reveal whether he has spoken to Un directly.
"I'd rather not say," Trump on conditions of the summit.
Earlier today South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong said as far they're concerned, the summit is on track.
"We believe there is a 99.9 percent chance the North Korea-U.S. summit will be held as scheduled," Chung said. "But we're just preparing for many different possibilities."
"South Korea and the U.S. have been sharing every bit of information and have remained in close coordination with each other," he continued. "We've had various working-level discussions on how to steer North Korea in a direction that we want, and I expect will have great talks this time."
