Sen. John McCain of Arizona made a secret trip to northern Syria last weekend to assess U.S forces and discuss tactics for defeating ISIS, his office said on Wednesday.

U.S. officials say McCain traveled to Kobani, a Syrian town on the Turkish border controlled by Kurdish forces, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"Senator McCain's visit was a valuable opportunity to assess dynamic conditions on the ground in Syria and Iraq," the press release reads. He also educated the forces deployed there and discussed "the counter-ISIL campaign and ongoing operations to retake Raqqa.”

McCain has been the lead Republican opponent of President Donald Trump since before the primary season in 2015.  At nearly every turn McCain has voiced his displeasure with the executive office.

McCain recently declared President Trump’s administration was in turmoil and expressed concern over how national security decisions were being handled.
