EAGLE PASS, Texas — Florida National Guardsmen have been integrated with their Texas counterparts along the Rio Grande in the Del Rio Sector, working together to address the continuing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The border mission is unique to the soldiers of 1st Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment, as they are usually involved in responding to hurricanes and COVID-related duties. Being in a different operational environment like the southern border, they told senior leadership it is good experience for Guardsmen fresh out of basic training.

Senior leadership encouraged staff sergeants and sergeants to check in on the mental health of their soldiers during their mission at the border because they may see some things that are disturbing.

"Honestly, I'm blessed. That's the way I think about it. That Texas Governor [Abbott] has asked [Florida] for assistance. And I am very thankful Governor Ron DeSantis has allowed us to help Texas. Texas has been there; they've been through a lot...They have their own hurricanes; they have their own state issues that they activate their Guard. They needed some help," SSgt. Casanas, squad leader for 3rd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st 1st Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment, told Townhall.

Also on the ground among the Florida-based Guardsmen were agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, who provide support when serious criminal activity occurs.
