PHARR, Texas — A small group of immigration protesters demonstrated outside the building where the House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday, saying the GOP is wrong to say there is an "invasion" going on at the U.S.-Mexico border.
"We're rallying because lawmakers come to Valley every time, for a photo op, they do not represent the values of South Texans. So we are here, representing [the people], representing the values of the Rio Grande Valley, and we're going to let them know that we stand united. We do not want more military stationed at the border. We want more funds for infrastructure, which is what our community needs," La Union Del Pueblo Entero Director for Community Organizing Joaquin Garcia told Townhall.
Garcia said what has been happening at the U.S.-Mexico border, which has been acutely felt in the Rio Grande Valley, is not an invasion but a humanitarian crisis.
Another sign held by a protester showed the moment when Border Patrol agents on horseback attempted to prevent more Haitians from illegally entering the country during the international bridge crisis in 2021. Agents were falsely accused of whipping them at the time, but no whipping was done by agents.
