Liberals were unable to contain their emotions on Twitter after news broke that the Department of Justice is dropping its case against Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (Ret.). Gen. Flynn had initially plead guilty to lying to the FBI during their investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential election.
Gen. Flynn was interviewed by the FBI in 2017 while he was serving as President Trump's national security adviser. The case was dropped on Thursday after the top prosecutor, a former member of ex-Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, moved to withdraw.
Gen. Flynn moved to withdraw his guilty plea in January. His lawyer, Sidney Powell, alleged that top DOJ officials moved to entrap him.
Many on social media decried the decision, saying dropping the case after he plead guilty represents the "collapse" of the DOJ.
This moment represents the full collapse of an apolitical Justice Department. An astonishing assault on the rule of law and in a functional DOJ it would prompt mass resignation. https://t.co/SBa8Ubl5NN— Susan Hennessey (@Susan_Hennessey) May 7, 2020
The DOJ has lost its way. But, career people: please stay because America needs you. The country is hungry for honest, competent leadership.— James Comey (@Comey) May 7, 2020
This is outrageous!— (((Rep. Nadler))) (@RepJerryNadler) May 7, 2020
Flynn PLEADED GUILTY to lying to investigators. The evidence against him is overwhelming. Now, a politicized DOJ is dropping the case.
The decision to overrule the special counsel is without precedent and warrants an immediate explanation.
Flynn pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his illicit Russian contacts.— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) May 7, 2020
His lies do not now become truths.
This dismissal does not exonerate him.
But it does incriminate Bill Barr.
In the worst politicization of the Justice Department in its history.
Bill Barr delivers for the boss. https://t.co/1EnTvCAcKq— Jim Roberts (@nycjim) May 7, 2020
#MichaelFlynn pleaded guilty & admitted lying to the FBI. Now Attorney General Bill Barr is using @TheJusticeDept as @realDonaldTrump's personal political tool.— Eric Swalwell (@ericswalwell) May 7, 2020
If you don't want America to be a tin-pot dictator's playground, vote him out! https://t.co/11YkYqnCGx

On MSNBC, Neal Katyal, a former U.S. Acting Solicitor General, also told host Nicolle Wallace this means the "collapse of the Justice Department...This is a political and incredibly destructive thing to the rule of law."
