Goodwin served as Manchin's general counsel for much of the last five years. At just 36 years old, he would be the youngest member of the Senate.

Goodwin is well-connected in the state's politics, with a father who chaired West Virginia's board of governors and a sister who serves as a top aide for Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.).
