Leftist Estimated Iraqi Death Count Waaaaay Off

Just Foreign Policy Iraqi Death Estimator

Since 2006 we have heard from our liberal friends how many Iraqi's have died since the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The Lancet (a British medical journal) study estimated 655,000 Iraqi deaths since the American invasion in 2003. Unfortunately, a research organization blew this number out of the water. In 2007, the ORB (Opinion Business Research) estimated "more than 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens have been murdered since the invasion took place in 2003." This made lefties all over the world salivate. The estimate satisfied so many leftist appetites that no matter what facts were presented, they held firm to the ORB number. In fact, as Michelle Malkin recorded in 2007, over 100 scholarly journals used this ORB number. 2009 provides a reality check.

Here is the report that came out today: "Combined with tallies based on hospital sources and media reports since the beginning of the war and an in-depth review of available evidence by the AP, the figures show that more than 110,600 Iraqis have died in violence since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion."

Although this number is still higher than anyone would like, it is a lot lower than the anti-war leftist echoing chamber was regurgitating. I can already hear them plugging their ears and shouting, "Laaa, laaaa, laaaaa. I can't hear you!" Because as Dennis Prager says: "Being on the Left means never having to say you're sorry."

UPDATE: "DocInsight" makes a good point: "The only time the Left UNDERestimates the death toll is when it comes to malaria-caused deaths in Africa (due to the prohibition of using DDT)."
