Affirmative Action Ban Declared Illegal in Michigan

According to FoxNews.com, 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has declared Michigan's ban on considering race or gender in college admissions "illegal." The ban was one instituted by the voters in Michigan themselves and is actually part of an amendment to the state constitution.

The court ruled 2-1 and said the ban violates the Constitution.

Michigan has said it will appeal.

"Entrance to our great universities must be based upon merit, and I will continue the fight for equality, fairness and rule of law," the Detroit News quoted Michigan State Attorney General Bob Schuette as saying.
