Social Media Erupts After HuffPost Questions National Pride at the Winter Olympics

The Huffington Post was blasted on social media after posting a recent article, with a caption reading: "If waving the American flag or chanting 'USA!' turns you off right now, you're not alone." The article was published on Saturday following a string of victories by the United States' Winter Olympic team.

“While President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda separates families, and federal agents detain 5-year-olds and kill unarmed civilians, American athletes are winning medals on behalf of the nation at the Olympics right now," the article read. "This whiplash between pride for United States competitors and national shame for the federal government is common.”

The piece continued:

The degree to which you feel shame and guilt right now for cheering U.S. Olympians might also depend on how much cognitive dissonance you have between the stated values of being American -- freedom, revolutionary spirit, opportunity for all -- versus how our government has actually acted in the hundreds of years since the U.S. was formed.

Users on X slammed the post, with replies far outnumbering likes, as patriots flooded the comments section.

The post only reinforces the fact that the left is out of touch with the rest of the country. The Olympic Games aren’t meant to be a platform for politics; they’re meant to be a celebration of patriotism, where countries from around the world come together to compete in sports. If HuffPost writers are justifying why some Americans might not want to cheer for Team USA, then who exactly should they be rooting for?

Are Democrats seriously going to suggest Americans root for other countries at the Olympics? That idea is absurd. Yes, our nation faces challenges, but patriotism shouldn't be canceled because of them. The left has made the fatal mistake of letting domestic issues overshadow their pride in America, calling into question their willingness to stand squarely on the side of our country when it counts. At the Olympics, the focus should be unity and national pride, not political point-scoring.

Like it or not, this is our country, for Democrats and Republicans alike. The one thing we should all agree on is taking pride in our athletes’ victories and celebrating America’s success on the world stage.
