John McCain: The President Should Lead "Rather Than Go Shopping For His Dog"

Appearing on Fox News Thursday morning, Senator John McCain (AZ-R) didn’t mince words when he told Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade that President Obama was to blame for the impasse in Washington over how best to extend the expiring payroll tax cut.

“The president should play much more of a lead role, rather than go shopping for his dog,” he said, referring to a trip President Obama made on Wednesday to PetSmart in Alexandra, VA. “Maybe [he should] call these people over to the White House, as the previous four presidents that I’ve served under would have done, and see if we can’t hammer something else out.”

Senator McCain further explained that the Democrats, under the tutelage of the President, are exploiting the situation by refusing to work across party lines, making Republicans look ineffective at the expense of the 160 million Americans “caught in the crossfire.” What's more, turning his attention to foreign affairs, McCain sharply criticized President Obama’s handling of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – and suggested that the Obama administration, in effect, is withdrawing troops from the Middle East solely to bolster his chances of winning reelection.
