Trump to Attend Pastors and Pews Event in Florida to Promote Free Speech in Church

In his continued appeal to evangelical Christian voters, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump will attend the Pastors and Pews event on Thursday in Florida.

In particular, Trump will be arguing for a repeal of the Johnson Amendment, legislation which prohibits churches from engaging political dialogue or endorsing candidates. Activists have argued that the amendment unfairly suppresses church leaders’ free speech. Trump offered an “impassioned” repeal for the law at the June meeting he held with 1,000 Christian activists and leaders in New York, one pastor who attended said.

In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last month, Trump offered a rare moment of humility when acknowledging he doesn’t deserve the support he’s received from evangelical leaders. He showed similar meekness at the June event, according to attendees.

Trump has already earned the endorsement of a few prominent evangelical leaders, including Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. and is polling well with Christian voters.

Will his latest effort to promote free speech in church further boost his standing with the demographic?
